Twitter/X alternative Bluesky

I understand the data, the user base of X now reflects the U.S. population.
Twitter suppressed conservatives.
Elon bought Twitter and ended the suppression.
Democrats flocked to bluesky because they want an echo chamber to ‘feel good’
It’s his company so he can do what he wants. But why are cons butthurt all of a sudden that users are leaving/not interacting?

I’ll answer for you. Because conservative internet tough guys only exist so they can get a reaction from others. If others aren’t there, their existence is invalidated.

You got a follow from me. Don't post dumb stuff.

Nah.

Just not fond of hanging out with Nazis.

As opposed to the people who feel invalidated if everyone doesn’t agree with them?

Whiskey is a prime example of that on this board.

He's also just a racist idiot, but he fits into the "internet tough guy" that just likes to argue with anyone that isn't a far-right freak

Or someone like me that doesn’t want to give those people the time of day. I’d rather talk Hawks and watch cute animal videos.

For real, why are you so concerned that I don’t want to listen or interact with users/bots that scream far right bullshit? Tell me what I’m missing

I’ll stick up for Whiskey a bit because I actually met him. We don’t agree on almost anything on here but I found him to be pretty down to earth in person.

But im a better golfer. :)

You probably weren't around any brown people, so that makes sense

so columnists, for example, who have both Twitter and Blue Sky, do they have to post the same thing twice or is there a way they can post once that goes to both platforms?

Conversely, are there any apps that combine the twitter and blue sky feeds?

My understanding is they post the same thing separately on each app.

Can I ask why everyone cares so much? Obviously comment sections are filled wtih the worst people on the planet but I just read the accounts I follow and don't read comments. Seems like a lot of unnecessary angst for something that is just as easily avoidable. But to each their own

For me, it's a combination of things. Yes, the comment section is always a cesspool of stupidity. But the amount of random ads for weird shit has skyrocketed after normal companies pulled their ads after the Elon take over. Even when I'm on my "Following" feed, when it suggests users for me to follow, it's all MAGA accounts. I don't follow any of them, so I'm guessing those are just accounts being boosted and pushed by the powers that be. I don't know how long you've been on twitter but there's a VERY big difference between what it's like today, and what it was like before Elon. It's a mess and has just lost it's luster. There's no way to filter out all the filth completely. And if you happen to venture into the "For You" feed on there, you're usually just a click or 2 away from having tits on your screen, and if I'm around by stepson, that's not exactly something I want.

I prefer to be on a social platform that is moderated at least somewhat to keep bad actors, racists and trolls to a minimum. That is all gone now on Twitter.

Imagine if people could just come on here and drop the N word, threaten people with violence, etc., Would you want to stay on here and just "ignore" those assholes?

"There is no account for LibsofTiktok"
"There is no account for LibsofBluesky"

Seems completely appropriate to kick anyone off your social media platform who incites bomb threats at schools...

Tits?

But you and Torbee's responses are rational enough. I have bluesky but not really using it... probably won't venture over too much until Fred produces my idea

your suppression is just the amplification of the minority. Elon let loose the loons, extremists and bots.
That's the freedom you want, have at it. You probably think Fox news is actual news too.

The tits thing always confused me. You'd think it would be pushed by the algorithm because of other posts I had clicked on, but I've never clicked on anything like that...on twitter at least.

I just ended up thinking that they assumed I was a lonely middle aged man that wanted to see some tits, so they kept pushing it on there. #FirstWorldProbs

Why is everyone talking about Bluesky right now?

A coworker told me their mom texted them on Tuesday to ask “What’s Bluesky??” That’s how you know an app is breaking through.

It’s been Bluesky Week in my life (I also got a text from a not-super-online friend: “Are you on Bluesky?”). I finally gave in and created an account — I have :: checks notes :: four followers. The vibe, as Ryan Broderick puts it in Garbage Day, is “millennial roommate board game night”: nostalgic yet slightly unhinged. Sam Biddle calls it “LARPing using Twitter.”

Bluesky is now the #1 free app in the app store, ahead of ChatGPT and Threads. It surpassed 21 million users yesterday. Bluesky engineer Jaz built a live growth tracker. You can see clearly that it truly blew up over the last two weeks:

Bluesky’s daily likers as of November 21

The platform is still tiny, comparatively. It’s 8% the size of Threads (275M monthly active users) and ~7% the size of X (300M monthly active users). But it has the most momentum, partially because it’s got cultural wind at its back. It’s owned by a public benefit corporation, a for-profit entity whose ostensible goal is to make a positive impact on society (though there’s no way to legally hold them to that). Its codebase is open source. It has 20 employees. Its mission? To drive “open and decentralized public conversation,” pretty much the polar opposite of what tech giants aimed to do in the 2010s.

In 2024, we’re tired of watching tech execs grandstand and profit on attention and expression (see: Anil Dash’s “Don’t call it a Substack”). It’s refreshing to be part of something that doesn’t feel slickly designed to sell your time to the highest bidder.

One more thing: Bluesky’s network is smaller than Threads’, but it feels larger because, as Aaron Ross Powell explains, the app is less personalized by default. On Threads, you may never see what’s trending globally because you’re given a narrow algorithmic feed based on what it thinks you like. (I got assigned to a “New York City” feed somehow, so 80% of my recs are stuff about walkability and Jane Jacobs.) Bluesky, on the other hand, gives you a straight-up reverse-chron feed from people you follow, plus a global “Discover” page with viral hits. As a result, it feels more like one big party.

Personally, I think Bluesky is fine for millennials who want to Marty McFly back to 2014. It’s a good Twitter clone. But long-term, I wonder if the new Twitter is… no Twitter at all? Maybe humanity is evolving past posting 280-to-300-character blurbs? Technology is so much better than it was in 2006. Maybe we don’t need to talk in soundbites anymore?

One of the main reasons social media platforms like Twitter/X were shit for communication is that they featured the like and retweet buttons. That drove asshole behavior (always trying for a dunk-on-you-moment) and pushed bad ideas to the masses. (white nationalists are better when they're not algorithmically boosted)

Be more like the humble message board, basically.

When it comes to politics and society discussion just shouldn't have these two algorithmic modifiers. Hopefully Bluesky and the like get this.

At the very least, leave algorithmic boosters out of discussion that is political or social. (I think we're technologically advanced enough to do this)

No. It did not.

It censored bigots and racists.
If that's what constitutes a "conservative" these days, then your post is informing us who you are and who "conservatives" are.

Having spent more time than usual, the last two weeks, around brand loyal republicans and a few MAGAs who probably attended at least one TRUMP rally, that is definitely what they are

It’s awesome.

One of the things happening the last 11 days is an unspoken bond of moving on and being done with corporate news media, closely following and caring about politics and shutting down all interaction with MAGA types online and in the real world is taking place on the Democrat side.

A sort of let it burn, non ****s to give, no longer watching the circus and interacting with the clowns type movement.

The last part is also starting to get underneath the MAGA skins as we disappear from their lives online and in real life and they are unable to keep their schtick going and we seemingly no longer care.

The ignores here, dumping Twitter, finding Bluesky, and turning off cable news certainly have made my life brighter. Have fun MAGA, don’t **** it up too bad.
See, all it took was for you to remove shitty sources of information from life to make you happier. We've been trying to tell many of you this for years.

Mina nails it

Re-post for embed. I highly doubt republicans of any degree, from brand loyal to MAGA will grasp what she is saying. Never Trumpers are the only ones who will.

For the Bluesky users, can you post a link to the funniest meme you’ve seen there about the new Jaguar ad?

Professor Stanford School of Medicine, Jay Bhattacharya, who said in fall 2020 that lockdowns were bad public policy was shadowbanned within 1 day on twitter.

You know, “racist and bigots.”

This has been proven to be false many times and it's embarrassing people still run with this false narrative

Lies. Yes they did, at the direction of US government officials and the Biden campaign.

Former twitter management was corrupt as hell.

You are peddling misinformation and Hillary Clinton thinks you should be arrested.
