I missed the beginning of the game, what was the deal with Dom Uhl today? I don't think he played at all did he?

Go Hawks!

He didn't play in the 2nd. I'm guessing he sat as he has struggled while others are really picking up their play.

This was the rotation I was advocating for! 4 minutes in first half and that's it.. he gave up 3 WIIIIDE open 3s in the first half and Fran had seen enough

He has only been playing 5-7 minutes a game lately the team plays better without him I feel. He holds the ball to long and isn't aggressive like everyone else on the team.

I don't know why you would care op. He's the worst player on the team including walkons.
He used to be descent at offense. Now he just dribbles a couple of times and passes to his teammates.
His defender figures out pretty quick, he's no threat to shoot the ball, so he's very easy to defend.
His defense his awful. 3 wide open looks from 3.
I really hope when they go to Germany this summer they drop him off and continue on without him.

Alittle mean but I agree he is the worst on the team, he's the only player on the team i cringe when he gets the ball. I just don't think he has put in any work on his game.

Maybe that's why he's been on frans doghouse in the past.

It shows how we had no bench in previous years when he was first or second off the bench his freshman or sophomore years.

I think Fran has had enough of him period. I never understand when a player doesn't improve from year to year. He was actually better as a freshman and sophomore.

Well I think it boils down to he has a suspect jump shot and is soft in the sense he does not like physical play. Who are you going to take minutes away from for Dom at this point?

Anybody, everyone plays with their hearts out and dives for loose balls I don't recall him ever hustling for diving for loose balls. He just doesn't seem like he enjoys playing basketball never seen him smile.

We play 12 deep, we can play 11 deep instead if he doesn't want to hustle or do the little things because he isn't all that athletic and when he gets the ball it seems his shoots a bad shot, or creates a turnover. But when he's open he passes it, with CW playing well he could play the 3 he's improved a lot throughout the season and is probably our best defender, Baer also.

His defense is poor, he has no confidence to shoot, and he doesn't box out and rebound. He dribbles like he thinks he's a point guard. Very perplexing.

I think he comes back and plays significant minutes next season, not sure why I feel that way.

Why would you think that when he has gotten worse every year? Baer will be the leader next year and probably is this year truthfully. But I feel he is lazy I don't know him, or have proof of that.

But when you don't improve or play aggressive that's what I think. He was a low 3 star recruit so he's pretty much played like that. Fran missed on every single guy he went after in that class and couldn't get anybody. It was just a terrible year for recruiting and Brady was a 2 star, but with his shot and improvement from last year he has and will help us in the future, im happy he didn't leave.

What is the infatuation with Dom Uhl? So he has struggled...so what...some of you act like it never happens to a college student athlete. I told my grandsons today after the game..watch someone will start a thread about Dom Uhl.

You did.

I kinda feel bad for uhl. He doesn't seem to be enjoying college life and his time at iowa. He needs to loosen up and have fun, i think it might do wonders for his game.

interesting..I don't feel bad for him...hey it is what it is..the good news is Fran doesn't stop recruiting.

Do you know that he isn't enjoying college & his time at Iowa?

It's not that he's struggled i can deal with that it's he's has shown no aggressiveness and doesn't do any of the little things that help win a game. If he was aggressive and fighting for loose balls or jump balls basically like pemsl, Baer I would have no issue with him.

Unless he works hard over the offseason i don't see him playing next year.

Players who struggle can easily look like they are not playing aggressive & fighting for loose balls.. He may not play next year...shoot he may not even be on the team.

One thing is for sure..he has been passed by several other players (rightfully so)..with more big guys on the way. Maybe Dom is ok with getting his degree.....from what I have heard he has been a good teammate, quiet & has stayed out of trouble.

hawk-i bob, Did you see my post? I wasn't infatuated with Dom, I just didn't see him on the court...and admitted I missed the first part of the game. I honestly thought maybe there was an injury announcement and I had missed it. If anything, I was concerned about him.

Now I see that he was in the box score. There are few things more painful than watching a kid work his or her way out of the rotation. Yes, I do feel bad for he and his family.

Yes, I also think you should relax. :)

Go Hawks!

He can't really transfer can he as a junior? Also better leave his scholly open if he does for Joe W. Maybe your right but have you seen him fight for loose balls this year? Or create a jump ball? I can remember everyone else but him. I'm not trying to dog on him. I just want him to play as hard as possible and I just haven't seen it. I also feel we play better without him. He did though have one decent game when the team played terrible at Rutgers. I will give him that without him we may have lost that game.

my apology...you are correct. You didn't reply until now so my assumption was wrong (my bad) ...

I don't feel bad for Dom...it is what it is..it just hasn't clicked in for him..it happens and yes I'm fully relaxed..until Thursday night.

I tell you who's fault it is. Dailey! See, if Dailey would do better we could move Baer to the four more often and poof! No Uhl! Wait, no, it's Till's fault for redshirting! Or, I've got it now. Jones! How dare he not play more on one leg!

I am kidding of course. It's Fran's fault for allowing Cook to get in foul trouble therefore requiring Uhl to substitute for a scant amount of minutes. Should have just played with four guys.

sure he can transfer...I'm sure Fran will keep a spot for JoeW.

Cook has been the beast lately I've been waiting for to see all year. Defense and rebounding and free throws improving every game. I feel next year he will add a 12-15 footer to his game. Junior year knocking down 3s. And praying he stays for his senior year as we will need him for when we will the national championship and The state of Iowa goes NUTS!!!!

Wouldn't he have to transfer to a non power 5 school. But it may be best for him to do that go to a school that needs him and will play. Maybe even a D2 school, he could be a star there.

Does anyone have an idea how far along Uhl is in his education? Can a guy Grad Transfer after three years? Can Iowa give him one of those honorary degree things?

Or, and this is just an idea, we could keep him around and only play him a few minutes if someone is in foul trouble, or for breathers and such.

I didn't say I wanted him to transfer, but I was saying if he wants major playing time maybe he should for his sake. Just so much talent on this team I don't see him playing next year unless foul trouble.

I would prefer he stays works hard on his game and maybe surprises everyone next year.

Could be the sprained thumb and tape job on his shooting hand, too....

Anyone who has ever sprained a thumb knows how long it takes that to fully heal.
And hurts like crap if it gets re-twisted.

We agree on something, I too are not sure why you feel that way

I felt Ellingson was going to be a contributor this year, thought it was going to have to be at the point, but non-the-less he is an important part of the team. Not many around here thought that. On the down side, I thought Uhl was break out this season too, got that wrong. Next season is his, he'll own his senior season.

I think for a lot of these guys, when they don't solidify a few fundamentals (footwork, confident dribbling, pivoting for position or a shot, etc) then when the game speeds up, and they now have to pay attention to other aspects of the game around them, they falter - often badly. You cannot play at the D1 level and need to 'think through' your dribbling motions, pivoting or footwork in the paint. You need to practice those things (which seems utterly boring) to the point you can do them at a high level without thinking at all. That way, you're able to see where double teams are coming from or pay closer attention to the passing lanes or be able to 'be ahead of the play'.

Uhl's shot has been 'off' since he hurt his thumb, and overthinking that injury is another distraction that takes away from your game. He has the agility, but not the footwork to play in the post - something he can work on. He also seems lost when he dribbles into the paint - has a quick enough move and dribble to get by people, but then is lost on what to do next and often hurries his shots near the basket and is wildly off. He is long enough that if he could develop a high bank-shot, he'd be a deadly offensive weapon because his length is tough to block shots on. But he doesn't seem to develop that shot option at all. Some guys use that very effectively. I think he doesn't trust his dribbling and ball handling when in traffic/in the lane and he's to busy focusing on that instead of being able to move the ball naturally and look for the shot opening. Or the dish-off. He's a good athlete; just needs to recover some fundamentals and not be dealing with a hand injury.
