University of Iowa ending relationship with The Swarm?

It is what it is. UNC only held on to their star QB because the collective. they only managed to kept him there because they had access to information from that university.
If these schools are so unafraid of the NCAA, why don't they just do whatever it is they want? Why skirt around pretending to care what the NCAA regulations are? If they can do anything, why don't they do everything?

Answer:
Because they are scared of being in violation.

Is this really a surprise to anyone? NIL was always going to favor the blue bloods first, then they are going to perfect the loop holes while the rest try to play it right and tippy toe around it. The blue bloods will stay on top and we will forever live in mediocrity… this is all very depressing, I guess I just have to live with the fact we may not win another BIG Championship in our lifetimes.
Further, this is Iowa actively holding themselves back. A literal shooting themselves in the foot. Not only will the blue bloods leave us in the dust, but our rivals will too.

Liberals at work again. Why is it everything a liberal touches turns to crap??
I'm plenty liberal and I'm full on nil has nothing to do with title IX. The football pays for rowing and all the other financial blackholes that come along with it. Nil should be for name image and likeness. If the rowing team can get a commercial or appearance fees then get that nil. Just stay out of the swarm. And I'm so liberal I'm borderline socialist, lol. We need money for football and a smaller amount to basketball. Fewer players.

According to TX_Hawk, (from Iowa Swarm) Matt Henderson from UI Athletics reached out to him today to assure him that Iowa still plans to email the coaches videos promoting The Swarm to their email list, they just haven't done it yet.
They won't provide the email list directly to The Swarm though.

He also called them out for doing nothing to help the swarm, and told them to look around at other schools before making a decision

Maybe there is something behind the scenes going on. But on the surface it looks like GB is trying to undercut the Swarm because they are hurting his fundraising efforts. Pulling out Title IX card is nonsense and for show.

Fundraising is probably the only reason he's still employed with the UI. With all his missteps to put it kindly.

And you have no clue how much work he has put in. Why don’t you do it ? Because you don’t want to . So either support or get out
Irrelevant to the lack of professionalism. He's done a great job getting it going and trying to grow things. That doesn't change the fact that you find a way to get a face to face with Barta instead of making posts on the internet.

Just because you're frustrated doesn't mean you should abandon your tact.

So UI isn't directly providing the emails to The Swarm, but will still send out promo videos for them?

If so I think we can chill out and enjoy Christmas.

They also wouldn't have done anything if he hadn't posted and multiple people emailed them about it. They got enough pressure to call him on a Christmas Eve Saturday.

They also provided no timeline on when they would send the email out, and are still refusing to do anything additional outside of the Learfield Sports contract.

Any sport program that is not self supporting should be abolished no matter the gender or sport , Families have to balance Their budgets and pay debts but the government and other entities can spend into debt and be welfare clients to others, it is economic stupidity .

maybe he already has? gb is basically a politician; all he cares about is his perception, and covering his ass. i think this was a good move to put some pressure on gb, as he probably doesn't want to be viewed as the cause for the demise of the collective.

I agree but title 9 makes that impossible. Not to pick on rowing but why do we have that other than to fill spots to make up for the size of the football roster. It's wrong that football seems to pay everything but also forces not an equal sport but number of athletes.

Do we know that he hasn’t? When all efforts of private diplomacy have been exhausted sometimes you need to shake the tree.
Do you think it’s a coincidence that Henderson reached out with a compromise fairly shortly after the release of information?

Title 9 is BS , The entire equity argument is also BS, In life You get what You earn by merit and working for it gender or race or Social standing be damned , the culture of entitlement and welfare is destroying Society . Why not give those rides to Kids who EARN it in the classroom , smart hard working People getting advancement thru merit is far more beneficial to Society than Welfare Athletics which nobody cares about except the welfare athletes and Their Parents. Iowa should have Men's Football, Basketball, Wrestling ,Baseball ( which if needed should be sponsored by MLB since MLB benefits by it thru the Draft pool ) and Women's Basketball , the rest of the sports are an absolute waste of funds and should be intermural so that those wasted funds could go to academic advancements. or kept in the revenue making or break even Sports. It will never happen tho , the entitlement and welfare mindset at the expense of budgets is wormed too deep into some Peoples fabric now.

I've never seen anyone misunderstand Title IX and college athletics more.

Also only two of the sports you listed are revenue. With your logic, Iowa Wrestling doesn't deserve to be sponsored by the school because it doesn't make money.

I would add track and field plus soccer. Not revenue generating but old school with track and soccer is still gaining popularity despite my indifference. Also volleyball just because its a highschool thing too. Rowing, bleh,

And i have enjoyed watching some college volleyball. But in person not tv. Much more impressive. I have a much younger cousin that is in diving at uni. Don't even know if Iowa has swimming or diving

Why would you assume there hasn't been face to face meetings?

And why would that matter anyway?

Obviously there was plenty of time for communication and this was the result of that communication.

Public pressure was a smart move and it will probably get the job accomplished which is all that matters.

When's the last cross country meet you went to?

They all bring in revenue (sales), whether or not they’re profitable is a different story. Not sure who started calling them non-revenue sports, but it’s completely wrong.

What a brilliant take! We all know everybody starts from the same exact place: strong family support, proper upbringing, access to quality education, social and economic advantage, open door opportunities.

Now ready, set, go ... and we're off! He or she who wants it most wins! Simple as that. Winners win, losers lose (and we all hate losers so let's cut 'em loose)! Cost means everything! Value means nothing! If you can't keep up, loser, go suck an egg.

Better yet, get outta here! There's no room at the inn. Get your sorry ass to a place where you belong, where the concept of equality is disdained for the BS it really is. Like Azerbaijan. Or Bangladesh. This is Amerika, loser!

In life you get what you earn ... and by golly, you and you alone have earned absolutely everything you have, all by your wondrous self! Nobody else helped pave the way ... not your parents or teachers, or family, or friends, or (least of all!) life circumstance. You owe them nothing. You and you alone are the hero in your very own world!

So go be a hero! You've earned it! Gratitude is for chumps.

Barta is so out of touch when it comes to some things. Time for him to retire. Should’ve been let go after lawsuit and ride off in the sunset and resign/retire at his age. For all the hes a good fundraiser crowd I’d say you can’t tell me his replacement couldn’t do the same. Not like it’s such a difficult task to raise $ at Iowa.

He needs to realize it’s a new era with NIL and adapt or die or be left in the dust.

The issue really is that the Swarm can be more effective if they can directly contact season ticket holders and the donors/large donors themselves. But the university appears to be hiding behind semantics to not allow them access to this information. I've said it before in other posts, in this new world of NIL donor money could get a larger return by donating to the Swarm rather than to the UI Foundation. The athletic department will not want that. How else are they going to fund new rowing facilities and pay non-revenue coaches hundreds of thousands of dollars and hire oodles of athletic department support staff.

The good part of this NIL is that it exposes how much money has been going to all these ancillary things since athletic departments are technically "non-profits."
Do you believe there us lots of donor money going to those other sports and that the donors that do give to these other sports are going to stop giving the very small amount they do give because of the collective?

This reads to me like the swarm wanted complete access to all athletic department records on donors and were told no with a condition that to get to a maybe or a yes they would need to open up their business model for all sports.

In other words give us what we demand on access to everything while we gut a fundraising operation that obviously is really good at what they do without any cash flow directly back to the athletic department. That sound like a deal an athletic director should make? People know where the swarm lives...why should the swarm have special access to the athletic department to do their thing?

NIL collectives are really bullshit in regards to the topic of Nil and it's Intent to pay for service performed. They are just booster money funnels for pay for play which is not supposed to be allowed. The fact it is uncontrollably allowed is ruining level playing fields in amateur athletics at a record rate. Schools are also not supposed to be promising nil funding as a recruiting tool but it's pretty clear that is being done against the rules. If nil funding was truly separate and apart from schools and being given for service performed as intended I don't see how there could be any relevance to title 9 compliance as the school would have nothing to do with it. So in the end it seems schools may be opening themselves up to compliance issues due to the NCAA not enforcing the proper application of Nil to college athletics.

Revenue generating in what way? Track has 12 scholarships for a roster of 60 oe so athletes for men. Most of them are out of state students. So the team itself is generating tuition at the highest level for the University. Revenue generating has been twisted to mean only television or ticket and merchandise sales.

Why do you think division 3 offers sports if they don't generate revenue? The sports are the only reason the vast majority of those schools are still in business. And yes they receive state and fed support despite being private colleges.

Oh I understand it just fine. It is a scholarship shell game at the expense of Fiscal responsibility and merit.

This is true. We have waited patiently, had meetings, and pleaded for Iowa Athletics to help us. They have always been pleasant, cordial, and appreciative for putting all of this together. Unfortunately, however, up until this point, they have not done the things that other schools are doing to help their collectives be successful. I want access to season-ticket holders and donors. And if that isn’t possible, I want them to educate the fanbase for us and endorse what we are trying to do here. See Michigan, Ohio St, North Carolina, etc.

When I got denied due to the fact that I refuse to raise money for all student-athletes in all sports and adhere to Title IX, I became pretty frustrated. And when I see the schools we compete with providing their collectives with the same things I’m asking for, I find that very difficult to take lying down.

Here’s the reality….we have football and basketball players that are either going to be paid, or they are going to leave. I’m the one who has to make this happen with the support of our fanbase. If I can’t reach our fanbase and ask for support, how are we going to keep our players happy and how are we going to have a place where top prospects/recruits want to be??

I could have sat back and continued to take it, but I figured Hawkeye fans would rather I fight for Iowa as opposed to sitting back and watching our football and basketball teams fall apart.

Thanks to everybody who supports us. For those critical of me, please feel free to set up shop and raise money for these kids yourself. I will cheer you on. And if you prove to do a much better job than I have, I will gladly stand down and toss you my keys. This is a philanthropic endeavor for me…I’m not taking a dime from this. In fact, quite the contrary.

Go Hawks, and Merry Christmas!

Appreciate everything you’re trying to do.

For some reason, I had a bad feeling Gary Barta was going to try to find a way to f#ck this up.

At this point, I would recruit every big football donor possible to turn against Barta and not drop another dime until Barta is gone. It is painstakingly obvious Barta is what’s holding the programs back.

Why should you have direct access to a database you pay nothing to build or secure? What protections do you have in place to protect data? You act like you should simply have access to these things but do donors want you to have access to them? Pretty sure anyone that wants to knows where ti find you.

Shouldn't you be building your own database? After all people have given to you. Are you sharing all that information with the athletic department and if so why? Isn't this a deal between an athlete and an person that wants to pay them for their name image or likeness? If so how exactly is that charity? Doesn't sound charitable.

Maybe athletic departments that are so much more open around the country are going ti learn a difficult lesson soon as are donors to these collectives. What will happen for example when the IRS decides nothing given to you was charity and yet people took deductions on your receipts....and how closely will that be tied back to these universities....

Just because everyone is doing it as you claim doesn't mean it is the right things to do. You seem more above board than the others around the country and honest in your approach. Still doesn't mean the whole thing isn't going ti blow up. And it will by the way

So when a donor sues the University because the athletic department shared their information with you what then?
