WASHINGTON, May 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday summoned the four top congressional leaders to the White House next week after the Treasury warned the government could run short of cash to pay its bills by June.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a letter to Congress that the agency will be unlikely to meet all U.S. government payment obligations "potentially as early as June 1" without action by Congress.

The estimate raised the risk that the United States is headed for an unprecedented default that would shake the global economy, adding new urgency to political calculations in Washington, where Democrats and Republicans were girding for a months-long standoff.

Biden called Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Jerusalem, where he is on a diplomatic trip, to invite him to a May 9 White House meeting. The two leaders haven't sat down to discuss the issue since February.

Biden also extended invitations to House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell, whose fall in March sidelined him for weeks, said he and Biden had a "good conversation" today, adding: "I'm sure we'll be speaking again."

House Republicans passed a bill to raise the debt limit last week that includes steep cuts to spending from healthcare for the poor to air-traffic controllers, which the Democratic-controlled Senate and Biden say they will not approve.

Biden has steadfastly said he will not negotiate over the debt ceiling increase, but will discuss budget cuts after a new limit is passed. Congress has often paired debt-ceiling increases with other budget and spending measures.

A White House official said Biden, who had previously said he wouldn't meet McCarthy at all to discuss the debt limit, would "stress that Congress must take action to avoid default without conditions" on May 9.

Is this that scary part where all the government workers don’t have to work and then get all the back pay eventually?

Free vacation basically.
Nope, that’s a shutdown…this is the part where we have already spent the money but decide not to pay the bill….think repossession and foreclosure. I don’t believe the US has ever done this before.

And guessing we won’t this time…the result could be cataclysmic to both our economy and the world economy…I’m guessing they will come up with something last minute so they don’t test the theory on what exactly would happen…

While technically correct, that's an exaggeration. Debt service is part of the bill paying process. Expanding the debt ceiling allows new debt to be added, Not doing so doesn't mean existing debt automatically doesn't get paid. While that would certainly be true at some point, politicians play fast and loose with terminology.

Yes "may" happen - it is not a certain thing as many make it out to be. Money will still come in and the administration would be responsible for what gets paid out. Might not be bad to see some of them earn a paycheck by making such decisions.

McCarthy is saying Biden must negotiate. Fine. Tell us where you will add money, Kevin. He will never get anything through the House that the Senate will pass. He is the weakest Speaker in my lifetime. If he truly thinks a negotiation is going to happen, he will need to concede rolling back the Trump tax cuts that were not paid for.

Exactly,.. Everybody is all concerned about what happens if we don't pay our bills,.. better start thinking about what's going to happen when we can't pay our bills.

This is all a dog and pony show. A couple weeks from now, they will increase the debt limit and continue to kick the can down the road. It’s not a matter of if, but when the us defaults on its debts. If you are under 50, it will happen in your lifetime.

Thing is that even when it comes, an actual default won't happen,.. What will happen is drastic cuts to discretionary spending,.. Defense, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Farm Subsidies, etc... It will all be on the table and it will all be painful.

We won’t ever default. We own the printing press and can pay anytime we want…..

At the expense of ultra inflation of course

R's should do something else that costs them votes, it can't hurt them any more than what they've already been doing

So I started paying attention to Politics around 2008 and it seems this happens every year. Has this been a thing going back before Obama?

Which one? Biden? McConnell? Schumer? Jeffries? Which one do you think would be responsible for a default?
O, we won't default, they need those paychecks during this economy also.

Suddenly people are going to forget about all that free shit they were promised for their votes though, if I had to guess. McConnell knows he holds the cards.

Until politicians get serious about realistic ways to control the budget there’s no point in having these discussions. Spending is at historic highs and tax rates are at historic lows. Real spending cuts are only popular if it’s something you don’t depend on. Tax increases are only popular if other people are paying them.

Until we elect someone who has some political courage it won’t change.

I do not think we will either...but with the lunatics and "patriots" in the House right now, I do think they are capable of purposely doing this next year. Party over Country.

McCarthy has done what Dems have said he needs to do - he's provided a plan. McCarthy knows the plan won't be accepted, but it's a plan, and it's not totally unreasonable if everyone puts politics aside.

Who knows when we will run against limit. Let’s say July 1st. The problem with his plan is that there is really no way to come up with a binding agreement before then. It just can’t happen to develop one agreeable to everyone.

It cracks me up how willing thr left is to.just concede their side is feckless.

The wingnuts in the House would cheer if we defaulted. By your posts you no doubt would too.

Show us the colossal volumes of legislation this House has produced. Shit, these intellectually deprived Republicans can't find the floor, let alone write legislation.

It is completely unreasonable

The 4 years of dodging Republican sabotage purely for election gains has to end at some point, right?

Yup

And this means most bank loans will follow.
This could crush the housing markets for a decade w/ the associated 70s-80s style interest rates.

There seems to be nothing but hypocrites up and down both sides of the aisle.

In '06 Reid, Durbin, Schumer. Murray. Biden and Obama all voted against raising the ceiling, and the Pubbers routinely do the same when a (D) is in the Oval Office.

Clown world.
