US Open U17 &U20s thread

Augustine (how was he the 15 seed?):
USA U20 Freestyle National Champion (2022)
U20 Pan-American Freestyle Champion (2022)
USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week (7/12/22)
Not that it plays into the seed but did I hear right that Augustine was a NQ for Pitt last year? Makes the win even better, if so.

Yep. Went 0-2. I think he was ranked around 20ish for a lot of the year. Had a win over Gaitan of ISU and really close losses to Edmond Ruth and Plott.

I think he could be pretty tough at 125 but not sure if it's a possibility. Will need to add some size at 133. Bouzakis is projected as a high end college 133 so we will get an idea how he compares tomorrow.
I’d guess 133 but I think Bouzakis is at another level right now.

You need to wish list a 184 and 197 pounder. 😉

The US Open is on Flo, and I didn’t see it on Flo, hence the question. Smartass.

bouzakis will be interesting for sure. in my opinion he’s better at freestyle than folkstyle

Riggins won his first match by DQ. So i'm not sure if the guy missed weight or MFF or what, saw that in a few other brackets, one of the Raney brothers lost by DQ. Then Riggins won his second match 12-2. Has his consi semi match coming up against Fea.

Rhodes just lost his consi semi 11-0, got totally dominated by Ysaguirre and wasn't close to a score unfortunately.

Isaiah Cortez won his two consi's 12-0 and 10-0. He will face his brother Elijah in the consi-semis. A match/Rematch with Bassett looming for the 3rd place bout. (Edit: just as I say that, it looks like Elijah will forfeit to Isaiah.)

Credit to Riggins for bouncing back. That was a bad loss yesterday.

U20's starts today at noon. Winners get a pass to the best of 3 finals at WTT in June. Here's the list of Hawkeyes/recruits competing:

Kale Petersen 61 kg
Jace Rhodes 61 kg
Carter Martinson Cade Siebrecht 70 kg
Aiden Riggins, Carson Martinson, Jude Link 74 kg
Gabe Arnold 79 kg
Bradley Hill 125 kg
Where is hunter garvin going to school at - thought he was a hawk recruit. I Must be mixed up.

Riggins caught Fea on his back for 2, then gave up the 1 reversal into a trap arm, and got gutted 4 times. Down 9-2 at the break.

Three takedowns for Riggins in the 2nd period, but he comes up short 8-9. Will wrestle for 5th.
Riggins is the classic slow footed grinder. He is going to have to pick up the pace and urgency in his matches and get some other offensive options besides diving under and holding the elbow when he doesn't get to the leg. Moving forward I hope he is the last grinder type we target as a main recruit.

Guy has guts though - won 8 matches on the backside. That’s a long day.

I'd say between Kennedy/Brands/Arnold/Assad/Anthony Ferrari + hopefully Angelo in the wings, we should be more than covered at 165-184 with high end talent. Riggins is a great guy to have in the room, high quality backup with upside. Great to have a guy like him around in case of injury or nights off during the season.

Might as well wish for Jax Forrest too.

Im unable to watch today and trying to follow along. Did Gabe arnold just win u20’s? If so, how the hell is a ho hum tweet showing one scoring maneuver all the hoop-la this site can manage. I’m honestly disappointed. How did Peterson do against Bouzakis?
I believe that was in the semis. Finals haven’t started yet
