Uthoff on challenges of going the road to play Maryland: "There are none."

With the way JU has been playing and the increased media attention....he's going to provide a lot of "bullin board" material.

The thing is...he isn't talking smack...he's just being JU, blunt and to the point. I don't think it's a big deal.

For a long time I said Uthoff had the skills to be good, but he was too soft to ever be great. This year, I don't know what happened, but without changing his on-court appearance, he's become a man of iron will who speaks the truth when asked and then backs it up. It's a metamorphosis I never thought possible, and it is what has made JU one of the top 2 or 3 POY candidates in the nation and the MVP of the Big Ten.

Jarrod isn't politically correct. He doesn't give us that coach-speak garbage. And it seems clear that his "dare ya to beat us" attitude has helped mold these Hawkeyes into a special unit that simply refuses to lose. JU has become a man among men. May he and the Hawkeyes continue their success Thursday night and the rest of the season.

Can anyone fill me in on the context of the quote? Was it really a question about playing in a new arena as compared to the old building? I have no problem with what he said no matter what the context, but I'm curious how the question was framed. Thanks.

The question and Jarrod's answer kinda remind me of that scene from "Hoosiers" when Gene Hackman measures the basket in the Butler Fieldhouse. Yep. 10 ft. Just like the crackerbox gym back at Hickory High.

Hell, Jarrod and the Hawks have played in Ames, West Lafayette, and East Lansing. They've played in Madison and Chapel Hill. Why would playing in College Park be anything special?

Can't wait to see the Hawks bury the turtles.

Just like having to fill the 24 hour news cycle the sports page too makes something out of nothing.

The context of the question was around this being the first time Iowa has had to travel to Maryland to play, so simply a new venue. Nothing to do with the Terps, and I believe JU even stated before that you have to be ready and on your game any time you're on the road in the B1G.

On another site there's video of players being interviewed yesterday, and someone is asking Woodbury the same question in the background of the Uthoff interview video, and you can't hear his full answer, but he's basically saying: "not much, the court's the same size, ..."

I see Uthoff's comments (Liestekow's tweet) have been posted and are being eaten up by fans on one of Maryland's sites. They hope to make his life miserable for 40 minutes.

If players focus on "hating" on one player...and using their energy to do it...that is good news for Iowa...their focus is in the wrong place...

I think Stone Man will handle it well, and perhaps relish it...

Yah, and the MSU fans were out for Iowa's blood when JU and the Hawks stopped by. How'd that turn out for them? ;) May a similar result transpire in College Park.

The 20 pounds of muscle he added didn't hurt matters. Makes him tougher all round, and particularly a threat to take it inside, which helps open up the long ball.

If Maryland needs this "quote" to get up for the game it may explain why they have played such pedestrian basketball. Also, that was a really bad set of questions Utoff got asked.

It's fun to watch them mature. My favorite was this past Purdue game when Uthoff was rejected by the big Purdue freshman Swanigan in open court. They showed Uthoff afterwards and you could tell that he was seething, but in a very restrained way. I think the poster board monster slam later in the game was his direct response to that play.

He's a young man of few words. Given what he's done so far this season it's serving him well.

Uthoff has become bad ass. Great to see this play out. There is more out there to get. Hope they get as much as they can.

He walks around like his is bigger, it probably is, have you seen his hands?

This will be a major challenge for the Hawkeyes. I'm not seeing this one as a W but this team seems to have "IT".

No way I'd pick against Iowa now, no matter who they played or where they played them. I think Iowa is too experienced, too talented, and too strong willed for anyone right now. Combine that with a Maryland team that is consistently less than the sum of its parts, that has been fortunate to nip Wisconsin and Northwestern at College Park, and I'll take the Hawkeyes tonight. Period.

100% right on. He's become a total bit^&, which is what we need.

How long until he takes an "accidental" elbow that forces him to sit at some point? It's really the only way to stop him, and he's getting a reputation as a cocky player. Lucas Johnson or some of the other Big 10 goons would have done it.

I can never tell if Uthoff:
A) has a ton of moxie
B) really hates talking to press and using the meaningless lingo so just answers quickly and honestly
C) is a really funny dude and puts on an act to troll the media

Of all the teams in the B10, Maryland matches up the best with Iowa. They are long and they have great guard play. They also have someone in Layman that has the size and quickness to guard Uthoff...well, we will see about the quickness I guess. It's easily the best match ups the Hawks have faced IMO. This is going to be a very interesting game. When Gesell and Clemmons are in the game, it will be interesting to see who they put on Jok. That's the serious mismatch that I can see. Peter will have to deliver as I think he's going to get shots. If they put Sulaimon on Jok, who guards Clemmons? Sapp may have to make them pay...and that may be Maryland's strategy...guard Uthoff and Jok, make the others beat us.
The fact that they haven't lost a B10 game in that building tells you something about their home court, so it's tough to predict a Hawk win. That being said, if we can control Trimbles penetration and with Fran switching defenses all the time, I don't think Maryland's the most intelligent team offensively I've seen. They stand around waiting for Trimble to create much of the time. Can't wait to see this game...great match ups so it's tough to see how this will go...plenty of story lines.

He's going to destroy Layman. There is no one who matches up well with him tonight, or pretty much any night.

Love Uthoff.

I suspect Suilamon will start out on Pete, which means that Sapp will probably have a bigger slower guy on him. Fran needs to take advantage of that speed advantage. On the other end, all five Terp players can score. I think they are most dangerous around the basket. Both guards drive and shoot. Both big men are also good scorers, and Mello is really good at getting them the ball, if they are open when he drives. Leyman does a little bit of everything, and with all of the other defensive options, I hope he is not hot from the corner, which will be available at times.

Tough matchup. Their team and crowd will be up. If the Hawks keep them off the offensive boards and have at least an average shooting night, I still like our chances.
