Verkleeren?

Kids are lining up to ride the bench at PSU. He will never start for them...Never. Sadly he has to know this, obviously doesn't care. I don't understand why you wouldn't want to compete.

Not necessarily: At the current moment as it stands, PSU's 133 pounder is Triston Law, who won zero matches last year, and the 141 pounder is Jered Cortez, who went 6-3 last year, before being injured. There is a very good chance that PSU will once again only send 8 men to Cleveland, out of 10.

Verkleeren don't wrestle ether one of those weights and never will. Barring injuries/ Big changes there is no room for him.

Snowflakes like to ride the bench..They have all the fun and get the rings also and don't have to do much just show up get u r reward..Then when they go out in life can show off the rings and hope it lands them a nice job. So sad the county has come to be this way.
If he were scared to compete, he could go to a ton of other schools and be almost guaranteed a starting position. I am sure Jarod feels he has as good of a chance to earn a starting role as the other incoming recruits, and is not afraid to compete for it....
Who's he going to beat for a spot?

When Iowa was the kind of the hill, this is the kind of depth they had and there were a lot more programs to choose from. Does anyone remember the time Gable had the 3rd string (167 pounder- I think) place 7th at the NCAA's. That is crazy to me. One kid quit, the back up got hurt, and the 3rd stringer placed.

Who can understand why these kids would choose a place that will probably keep them on the bench. Personally, I think it is great that he is up for the challenge. However, I still don't understand it.

Maybe he thinks he will develop to the point where he will be good enough and maybe he likes dodge ball.

You're not paying attention. RBY, Teasdale, Whittlake, the Lee brothers, Verk....they all might be better freestyle wrestlers than folkstyle. Some of them may be willing to sit a year or two or even sacrifice some of their collegiate goals to be a part of the NLWC which in my opinion will soon become the THE olympic regional training center. With guys like Mark Hall, Zain, Nolf, Bo and Taylor already there, that club is going to be scary good with talent.

Come on Minn, maybe he has the confidence that he can beat out Berge. Calling a proven competitor like him a snowflake is bad form.

Btw, I'm totally shocked he picked PSU. I figured the coaching upgrades at ISU would've attracted him back.

Thanks for bringing such an unbiased opinion to the board. It's only a matter of time until Snyder, Burroughs, Dake and Stieber make their way to the NLWC so Cael can help them realize their full potential.

Iowa might have had depth back in the day but this is absolutely unheard of, PSU will have around 12-15 guys on their team that were top 10 overall recruits. I agree that these kids are going there in large part because of the NLWC and dreams of getting a gold rather than for college success.

This is a shocking commitment on the surface. However, when you take a closer look the kid is probably thinking he's good enough to make the lineup, and if he's good enough to make the lineup, he's going to win multiple individual national titles, and four team titles. Essentially. He's betting on himself. Also will improve his spikeball and dodgeball game tremendously.

Who doesn't like dodgeball?

Taylor? Guy has never made a world team! And still might not if Dake moves back up to 86 and Cox decides to wrestle. Zain can thank his lucky stars Pico went MMA! Nickal won't beat Zahid once he moves up to senior level. Green isn't going anywhere any time soon so Nolf will have Taylor treatment (bridesmaid) Hall on the other hand is all world and will be the name and face of NLWC in the near future.

To me college affilitions mean nothing at the world level. I don't understand the hate for DT. He beat 2 former olympic gold medalists but I guess that isn't enough. Anyway, I will be cheering for whoever makes the US world team (even Dake).

Great wins, but he still isn't he best wrestler at 74kg for US and may very well not be the best wrestler for the US at 86kg if Cox and Dake are at the weight. My comment was in response to the poster saying NLWC will soon be the Olympic Training Center. Not the case, and far from it.

You see that sticky on your board raising money for the HWC? PSU and the NLWC are motivating factors in leading some to donate whether any of you will admit that or not.

I think you're underestimating the young talent Cael has there now and is bringing in that will soon be a part of the NLWC. You have several cadet and junior world champions and numerous world team members. Some of which in my opinion are willing to sit a year or two in college and even sacrifice some collegiate goals to be a part of and train there.

I understand the young talent that is coming in. That doesn't make them the future Olympic Training Center. Look at the talent now. Nico wont be the guy at 57. They don't have anyone at 61. Oliver may be the guy this year at 65. Green isn't losing to Nolf at 70 . 74 Hall is staying in his age group. 86 Taylor is thanking his lucky stars Dake went down and Cox hasn't decided to wrestle yet, and 96 and 125 they have nobody. You trying to tell me Teasdale, RBY, Lee, Hall, Whittlake, and Berge will be better then Nico, Zain, Nolf, Nickal, Taylor? Right NOW I'm not seeing it.

Huh? Pretty sure everyone and myself will admit that HWC needs to raise more money to compete with Ohio RTC and NLWC which both bring in more money on an annual basis.
Annual basis? We have people giving what your goal is for a year for HWC to NLWC every month. Cael has the money in this town from the #1 ranked alumni base in the world bought in. What he asks for he shall receive, no if ands or buts.

I never said otherwise. Might want to read my post again.

That was never my stance.
No...never said it was but to be honest....it was mine. Lol. I thought there'd be a noticeable drop off for sure when they graduated. Anyway, great discussion! Thoroughly enjoyed hearing your thoughts and I genuinely mean that. I'm out of here for a week or two so y'all don't think I'm trolling. Thanks again!

I agree about 74. Cox vs DT at 86 will be interesting...

Dont look now, but Cunningham and Varner were in Gwiz's corner this weekend.

I couldn't agree more. Scared to compete.

Uh, no. The kid has stated that he hopes to win the 149 spot after Retherford leaves. To do so he'll probably have to beat out Berge (at least for one year) and then probably Nick Lee in following years. Verkleeren may be the most natural 149 pounder of the three, so there's that.

While I did not think Verkleeren would end up at PSU, it doesn't appear he afraid of the competition.

yes WE ARE all aware PSU has the means to buy talent.
Well I mean Gwiz kid is post NCAA so yeah we can and will pay him to wrestle out of NLWC. He spent about a month here recently living with the Taylors. Idk seems to me lots of wrestlers like fun

He's going to almost literally face the best wrestlers in the country in the practice room. Every day. How's that being "scared"?

I'm no PSU fan but I don't get that comment at all.
He's never going to face the pressure of being counted on. He's going to be a room guy at Penn St. Nothing else.

Dont discount proximity to home, future plans post college, and relationships w folks going to psu.

Im talking just about JV as each kid is different.

For those who will question how can psu afford JV, well if he gets more than a .2 ship until or if he gets in the starting lineup it would be suprising to this guy.

Who's he going to beat for a spot?
That's why they wrestle...kids don't stop growing and improving when they leave high school. He has confidence in himself and will have the opportunity to wrestle every day against incredible talent. Then throw in the guys in the room for the NLWC, and it is a great opportunity. For many kids, especially, PA kids, it is an opportunity to good to pass up...
