The orig post is updated with this:

I would say a B-/C+ for a grade. That grade would be higher if Fran hadn't messed and shorted us 2-3 guards.

Got to say I am disappointed even more that he only has one guard coming in next year in Joe T. We need at least two more guards on the roster.

it looks like Joe is a good defender and can drive; his outside shot does not look consistent, however

I would probably give Fran an A for his first three classes. Working in the aftermath of the destruction of the Lick era, he pulled in two solid recruits of his own in 2010 (Basabe and Cartright) and also re-recruited McCabe and Marble. The 2011 class was quite good as well with Oleseni, White, and Oglseby. And the 2012 class provided the core of the team which reached the NCAA tournament three straight years (Gessel, Woody, Clemmons).

After that, recruiting took a dive. Poor roster management led to only having one ride in 2013 (which went to Jok). The 2014 class was not good (Dickerson, Uhl, and Ellingson). The 2015 class has been an dumpster fire (Jones, Williams, Moss, Wagner, Fleming, Hutton).

It looks like there has been an uptick the past few years, but missing on Carton after last season's debacle really hurt. Fran has not done well thus far in the 2019 class (outside of his son).

Long story short, I'd probably give him a C overall.
I would probably agree with the above overall, but not entering the transfer market to bolster areas of weakness would rate a "D".

Early on, first few years.. A-. White, Uthoff and Jok were nice gets. Woody and Gesell were big gets especially at the time.

Since then: D. His 2014-15 classes were abominations. Still can't recruit a difference maker at PG if his life depended on it.

Overall, about a C.

C/C- with notes his report card that until he learns point guard 101 he'll never be more than a C student.

And after looking at Franisdaman's class by class breakdown... if you think we're slow and white now, what until the fall of 2020. It's gonna be brutal.

D-

He has failed and just outright ignored addressing what this program has needed the last few years.

Many on here even knew Iowa needed more guards (PG) to replace the athletic ability/defense building up to the graduation of MG/AC. Instead of addressing that issue McCaffery recruited more bigs.

Joe T seems clutch tho. He had two buzzer beaters to tie their last two games... One was a 3pt shot, and the other a drive through the lane for a layup. Unfortunately they lost both in OT. One a triple OT...
If he is clutch at the next level, I'll take it!

When watching the Purdue game, it was 28-20 Purdue with 6:40 to go in the first half. There were some glaring misplays:

* Kreiner had THREE TURNOVERS.
--He was called for a moving screen
--On an inbounds play, the ball goes off his hands
--When he was driving to the basket he was called for traveling

* Dailey....wow.
--Carson Edwards blows by him for an easy lay up
--FOUR POINT SWING: With 9 secs to go in 1st half, he puts up a shot too soon; it barely hits the rim; Carson Edwards goes the other way and scores a layup to end the half.

Is it unfair to list the following 12 players as busts?

2020

I hate to give up on Dailey, but I think it is about time... His is a confidence issue. I really think had he redshirted, gotten used to the speed of the game, Bulked up, and gained confidence he would be a better player now.

Williams and Ellingson are having decent years. As did Meyer after he transferred ,IIRC. Although Brady could be screwed with the loss of Nick Norton for the year(big bummer there!).
Josh O was OK. But never the top 150 and player he was supposed to be...

The rest I would have to agree with you on. That happens when you put all your marbles in one basket looking for the golden egg.... Fran should have scouted some players with not a lot of high P5 offers, or players with a ton of non-P5 offer but few P5(Joe T) , and Run with that.
Instead of going for broke and failing to land/have a solid backup(e.g. Trey, Ingram).

WE NEED MORE GUARDS. There are still some out there. Why not grab one or two.....?!?

Didn’t McCaffery say after the game that Kreiner played excellent or something a long those lines. At least I think I read that on here.

It seems like Fran is willing to take some flyers on basketball savvy (see not athletic) guards, well and bigs as well (outside of Wagner). Maybe he needs to think more about raw athleticism on those flyers at the guard spot.

I think I would still give him a C-

But look at the way Rutgers plays HARD, ATHLETIC, AGGRESSIVE, DISRUPTIVE defense. Could Fran's current roster replicate that type of defense? Do they have the ability to? I don't think so. That's why we play zone so much, imo.

Part of it is coaching. The team focused A LOT on defense in the offseason and there have been positive results.

But part of it is recruiting, too. Fran looks at his roster (and its weaknesses) & he concludes the best defense for this roster is a zone defense.

We definitely need more athletic guards.

I would say B-/B...Cook was a nice get. Secured Woody early on, as well as Mike G. Uthoff was nice find on the transfer market as well. Too bad he can never get a top level guard. White was a very nice gem found too. Could be better, but could be a lot worse.

Utoff was a local kid, he was coming to Iowa no matter what. Fran really didn’t have to do anything to get him here.

Fran inability to get grad transfers here is mind boggling. Every where you look teams are bringing in guys and they are contributing right away. Especially at our weak positions such as guard/Wing. Why wouldn’t you try it at least once for god sakes. In that aspect I give Fran a D-.

I’d give Fran a C- overall. It could be worse looking at all the kids he signs and then they leave. That’s not a good look, but in today’s game it’s the norm. But Frans lack of talent awareness and the “Hail Mary” offers late in the game are not working (CW & MD). Bank those or use them on grad transfers.

Conner is a bust. Can’t shoot and slow. But he can sure piss pound the ball into the floor 30 ft from the basket.

Whats interesting to me is that this year Fran was forced to no more than a 9 man rotation. He only has 12 on scholarship and 3 are unavailable because they are redshirting (Nunge, Pemsl, Fredrick).

Will he stick to a 9 or fewer player rotation next year? If Cook returns, we would have 13 on scholarship and not sure if anyone would be redshirting.

Next Year's 13 Man Roster:

Three Freshmen
6'6" SF Patrick McCaffery (****)
5'10" PG Joe Toussaint (***)
6'4" SG CJ Fredrick (***)

Three sophomores
6'5" SG Joe Wieskamp (****)
6'5" SG Connor McCaffery (****)
6'9" F Jack Nunge (***)

Two Juniors
6'10" C Luke Garza (****)
6'8" SF Cordell Pemsl (***)

Five Seniors
6'8" PF Tyler Cook (****)
6'9" PF Ryan Kriener (***)
6'0" PG Jordan Bohannon (***)
6'5" SF Isaiah Moss (***)
6'6" G Maishe Dailey (***)

@Capital1Hawk , you were asking how many schollies open up for 2020. See the orig post. The answer, right now, is 5. Of course there could be early departures or transfers that affect that.

In 2020, these 5 players' eligibility would be up:

6'8" PF Tyler Cook (****)

6'9" PF Ryan Kriener (***)

6'0" PG Jordan Bohannon (***)

6'5" SF Isaiah Moss (***; was redshirted in 2015-16)

6'6" G Maishe Dailey (***)

Here is a link to the players offered for the 2021 class: https://iowa.rivals.com/offers/basketball/2021

As you can see, there are ZERO Iowa natives on that list.

What worries me is that the 2020-21 season will be a repeat of 2016-17.

Why do I say that? Because in March 2016 we lost 6 players and the following season we struggled. In March 2020, we are scheduled to lose 5 players.

In March 2020 we lose 5 players:
6'8" PF Tyler Cook (****)
6'9" PF Ryan Kriener (***)
6'0" PG Jordan Bohannon (***)
6'5" SF Isaiah Moss (***)
6'6" G Maishe Dailey (***)

Similarly, in March 2016, 6 players graduated or left the program:

PG Anthony Clemmons
PG Mike Gesell
C Adam Woodbury
SF Jarrod Uthoff
**Two players granted release in March 2016**
6'6" SG Andrew Fleming (***, was set to graduate in 2019)
6'6" SF Brandon Hutton (***; was redshirted in 2015-16; was set to graduate in 2020)

IMO, recruiting victories/failures fall into two groups: evaluation; and sales. An evaluation victory is when a coach correctly sees a bigger upside for a player than his fellow coaches. Fran's notable evaluation victories include: Cartwright, White, Olaseni (although the Xavier offer might move him out of this group), Sapp and Bohannon, and to a lesser degree Melsahn. Not sure who else falls into is group. Perhaps Jok with his injury history.

A sales victory is when you secure a highly-recruited player. Fran's sales victories include Cook, Weiskamp, Uthoff, Garza, Woody & Gesell. Is there anyone else who belongs in this group?

Since Marble was originally a Lick recruit, not sure where to place him, but Fran deserves credit for keeping him.

Obvious evaluation failures: Fleming, Ellingson, Hutton, Maishe (had he stayed with Rutgers, he would be buried on their bench)

I would give Fran an overall grade of B-, but things are trending in the wrong direction. Other than JBO, there are no other proven evaluation victories on the current roster. Perhaps a redshirt can join this group.
I am hoping that Joe T can join White as an A-10 level recruit who performs much better than that. The failure to have a sales victory since Joe W is a big negative.

I am hoping that P McCaffrey is a big victory of some kind, but he seems like a puzzle to me. I've seen him live 3 times, and just don't know how early he can help.

Interesting to see all of the C's or worse - I agree w/ the grade, but reading the board I would have expected to see the overall grade a little higher (which I wouldn't have agreed with)…...His in game decision making is below average.

I think virtually any coach (not named Lickliter) could produce similar results.....Slightly above .500 overall and slightly below .500 in the BIG....

Too many hit and misses. Jok being Iowa's lone recruit in 2013 didn't help. I literally expect 2 or more players from this years team to leave after the next 3 games.

C+, if 2014 and 2015 classes would have been better he would easily be in the B range.

Either Hawkeyes are getting good players or McCaffery is coaching them up. How else do the Hawks go dancing 4 out of the last 6 years?

I gave him a B-. He came into a dead program, buried by Alford's then Lickliter's ineptitude. Iowa wasn't even an afterthought for most recruits. Now the staff is regularly bringing in 3 and 4-star recruits, swinging away and sometimes getting the higher recruits, and getting some hidden gems. There still is the occasional transfer but not because they are "Creaned" but because they do not see playing time. I would give him a higher rating but the jury is still out for me until he replaces the kids leaving after next year. If he brings in another good to great class, the staff gets into the B+ - A range.

As of April 1, 2019, Iowa has at least 4 (and up to 5) scholarships available for the 2020 class.

It's gonna be interesting to see who Fran lands as we get set to lose these guys in March 2020:

6'8" PF Tyler Cook (****)

6'9" PF Ryan Kriener (***)

6'0" PG Jordan Bohannon (***)

6'5" SF Isaiah Moss (***; was redshirted in 2015-16)
