WBB 2017-18 Season

Up until recently, I can think of only two players that transferred out of Iowa for other than academic reasons under the current coaching staff, those being April Calhoun, who switched to Minnesota, and Kayla Timmerman. There were a couple academic casualties, and then there were a list of players that were hurt and had to end their playing careers, Lindsay Richards, Hanna Draxton, Jade Rogers, Virginia Johnson, and so on. The recent rash of transfers is really quite unusual. Maybe something has changed.

By the way I just found out Lindsay Richards had been an assistant coach at Pittsburgh for several years now. Had she not been injured, would she have been even better than Sam Logic? She's a McDonald’s All-American, after all. And Richards' family has quite a history with Pitt basketball.

I can’t figure out if he is logging out and logging back in or just using different devices.
ant80 is a family friend/relative of Bre Cera. Was very positive and supportive of the team when Cera committed to Iowa. As the last season dragged on, ant became defensive of Cera and fought anybody who dismissed her playing. Said farewell when Cera left and became quiet. And now he/she has come back with new revelations. Definitely not the same person as "Non posters".

Ok, so here are my thoughts after yesterday’s game. We haven’t been blown out in any of the 3 recent losses, even though we don’t have an outside game at the moment. Six of next 9 games are at home. Today was Mak’s first game back after missing 6, so game legs and game shooting aren’t there just yet for her, but will come along as she can now practice. She will get better as she gets back into the flow. The team also has to adjust to having her back in there. They have a few days to work on all of this before OSU on Thursday.

I don’t know what it is, but Alexis isn’t taking threes or making the few attempts she takes. And the team as a whole shooting 3s over the past 3 games has been atrocious. If we’d made only a few more, we’d win these games! Only 2 of 14 today. Just as bad against Nebraska. Our defense was good against their 3 shooters today, MN only made 4, but those couple extra points, one FT, and one bucket made the difference.

My prediction is that we will win our 6 home games (big time payback for MN and NE), and at least 2 if not all 3 of the away games. We drop out of the top 25 for now, but we will be back and better!

I wish I had your confidence hawkahawk, I predict they win 4 of the 6 home games and I agree with you on the away games.

"Lack of player development?" One of the first things anyone viewing the Hawkeye program would note is the advancement of player skills during their career at Iowa. The list is virtually endless. Players can reach a level and settle in but such players have been the exception under Bluder. If I were a recruit, skill development would certainly be a big, big plus in considering Iowa. In fact, if one were to ask who would be the best example of this staff's ability to develop players, I bet you would get 20 different answers! For the first year, you could choose Lillis. This year, would you choose Gustafson, or would it be Coley or maybe Hannah? Hard to choose!

Couple observations. Megan keeps us in any game regardless of what the others do. She can’t win them on her own, however. If Meyer doesn’t have her game legs, what’s she doing playing 40 minutes? Other teams are aware of Lex now so she’s not as wide open as previously. She also stands too upright when she dribbles; at her height, staying low should help her get by defenders more easily.

Of the 6 home games, only Wisconsin can be considered a sure win. Ohio State will be very hard to stay with.

Women's program is like the men's: lack of commitment to winning defense. It's very, very frustrating. Bluder's ceiling at Iowa appears to be virtually identical to Fran's.

Good question! I missed that she played 40. Mak’s FTs looked good, but her other shots were off. Maybe her legs are there and it’s more getting used to the brace.

I’m going to stay positive and stick with my prediction. First test is Thursday.

I think we win seven of the last nine.

people complained about Kirk playing an injured Beathard. Bluder played Disterhoft with a broken hand, and now is forcing Meyer back before the hand is healed and making her play 40 minutes??? Forced Davis back before her knee was fully healed now look at her.

Many accusations have been dropped about player transfers.
What hasn't been mentioned as probably the most significant factor is the change of offense.
This offence is aligned differently, significantly more post-play focused.
With different players scoring the points and points being scored in different ways it doesn't take much adversity for players to run to programs when familiar styles, where they can be the focal point.
If coaches were doing things unethical there would be public accusations even when the burden of proof is unattainable. Just like Bill Finley at Iowa State.
Cover ups do happen at places like Penn State football, this is not Penn State.

Player development at Iowa has been good, especially the posts. Morgan Johnson came in not sure she could play at this level & left an All BIG post, Bethany Doolittle made huge improvements, Megan has become arguably one of the best posts in the country. Printy & Dixon became threats off the dribble not just jump shooters, Kachine Alexander was a different player her last two years.

Bluder has never forced anyone to play when injured, that is just absurd & uninformed. The trainers, doctors make a decision along with the player as to when they are ready to return. On the transfers, they all have different reasons for leaving & often times its outside influences that get in their ear making something out of nothing. My niece just played 4 years of college ball & some of the things she shared were mind boggling about all this.

Different players react differently to certain coaching styles and after a year or two of interaction they form their opinions. That's probably why. There are three parts, during games, during practice, and off the court. Ohio State's coach is usually red faced during the games, but maybe he's very nice off the court. Geno Auriemma looks quite calm during games, but I've heard he's really tough during practice. And coaches' demeanor is but one aspect among players' expectations.
Sorry...none of it was that.

Great game against Ohio State. Every player contributed, Meyer got her shooting touch back, Doyle continued to be hot, Coley had a double double, Stewart and Ollinger both had nice games, and Gustafson had her double double stolen away by Ohio State and her own teammates -- several rebounds were snatched away from her fingertips:) The only question is, when will Sevillian get her form back?

Great game with very good defense. Mitchell is the best shooter in the big ten and got 27 but was 13 of 36 with just 3 trays. Mac back is huge. Alexis has kind of hit a wall. The team is a top 25 team when healthy

Chase with 12 and 11 rebounds was huge. If she can stay aggressive on the inside it will help big time. Although it might cost Megan a double-double.
Should also note that the Hawks have played 5 of 7 B1G games on the road.

Yeah, Coley and Ollinger need to fight more against the opposing team's players for rebounds instead of stealing them away from Gustafson:)

Nice senior season for Coley so far, what I'd hoped she'd develop into.

Wondering if Mohn's knees were barking again, or whether the staff thought the matchups favored Ollinger?

She's deadly with that 10-footer. With the attention Gustafson is getting, it is always gong to be there. Happy to she her getting some rebounds and taking care of the ball a little better.

i do have concerns with Bluder coached teams, although I am a fan of her overall. The women seem to lack basketball fundamentals. An example would be to grab a rebound or steal with 2 hands. they tend to not gain full possession. Every basketball team I've been associated with or ref'd for, the players were always sternly reminded of this importance. do it, or come sit next to me. I can't count the number of times over the years they've made good rebounds or steals negated not grabbing the ball with 2 hands.

I do empathize with the women having to play too many minutes, but the number of times I have seen them loaf back on defense after a turnover this year should not happen.

Great game! Proud of the women. I know they played well if i have to complain about past troubles.

Doyle had a double double, points and assists. Mitchell was 10 of 26 and 3 of 11 from three.

Lisa agreed about the defense. Not sure that giving up 89 points is very good defense, however. But it did make for an exciting game.

I'm not as concerned about the points scored against Iowa as I am with the 14 point difference. I know our D isn't the best by a long shot, but we do play an aggressive pushing the ball type of offense which gives the other team more opportunities as well.

The defense was pretty good. OSU took 86 shots in the game. They are one of the top 5 offensive teams in the country, averaging around 85 ppg. Mitchell is the all time leader in made threes in Women's NCAA history. Iowa held her to 3-11.Doyle, Meyer, and Sevillian made her work. OSU is a veteran team. They started 5 seniors.

How does Iowa allow this to happen @ home to Nebraska? Down by 30 at half?

Bluder's bunch could miss the NCAA tournament after a 13-1 start.
