WBB 2017-18 Season

Amanda is quick for her size and can defend guards and forwards. She is a good rebounder. I wish she would look for her offense in other ways than 3pt shots. She had her best success in the first Nebraska game without launching the threes. She is really hit or miss. Hits the shot or misses the basket completely.
No she is not quick. Minnesota guards beat her off the dribble multiple times very easily. Needs to figure out how to make an outside shot but at least today she hit the rim every time. She is good for at least one air all per game. Cannot dribble in traffic either, but best we have at this time.

Been a long time ST holder. Megan is the first young lady who I get emotional about. Might do the most with her ability as any athlete I have seen.
Agreed. Megan does an outstanding job of getting to the position she wants on the court. As another long tine ST holder, it is amazing how many teams are burning 12-15 fouls per game against Megan.

And she can and did beat them on a couple of drives today. She does not need to hit the outside shot to be effective and did not shoot a 3 today, but she was 2-3 for 5 pts and 5 rebounds in 18 minutes. She is pretty good at driving the basketball in my opinion. I think she is exactly the player Iowa needs going forward. Minnesota was beating pretty much everyone off the dribble today fwiw. 92-84

I guess we may have agree to disagree. Her drives today we're off loose ball situations, not face up situations. Then take all the times she gets the ball on the wing and just freezes without using the dribble to free herself. I don't mean to diss on the young lady, but as prolific offensive high school player, I have not seen those skills translate to college level after nearly two years.

Amanda's our garbage player on a team that needs one. She's got a good eye for rebounds and easy put-backs. She's just a sophomore - if we get more offense out of her in the coming months/years, even better!

Amanda has great instinct for the ball. She just hasnt played as much basketball as most D1 players

Amanda had all kinds of D1 offers for volleyball. She didn't play much last season and hasn't been getting minutes until recently, after the injuries.
She holds some records for 3pt shooting in HS, where, despite her size, she didn't post up often. She can put the ball on the floor, recklessly at times, and is strong. She just needs the game to slow down for her. She gets rushed and lets fly with some airballs.

Melissa Dixon let go plenty of airballs in her first two years. Let's hope Ollinger can make the same transition!

NCAA W Basketball Player Context Ratings for February 4, 2018 1. Megan Gustafson IOWA 402.000 2. A'ja Wilson SC 382.100 3. Teaira McCowan MSST 377.800 4. Vionise Pierre-Louis OU 373.900

A'ja Wilson played four less games than Gustafson, so her efficiency is slightly higher. Ohio State's Mitchell is way down the list. She must not be very efficient. The Kovatch girl is nowhere to be found.

Edit: I see the total points is taking the ratings from several categories together. Efficiency is just one category.

Big game tonight against a usually athletic squad that has owned Bluder's teams in recent years.

Except when the Hawks knocked them off when they were #9 at PSU a few years ago.

Two losses to a bad Penn State team two years ago pretty much knocked Iowa out of the NCAA. Last year's loss also contributed for sure.

I think Iowa has lost 8 of the last 10 to PSU. Some of those losses were to Maggie Lucas and Kelly Mazzante teams. But they did lose to some teams that had size and not much else.

Twin towers Gustafson and Coley scored 33 and 24 points respectively, and Stewart scored 8 in a short time, but Iowa barely hung on to beat Penn State 80 to 76. Scored 49 points in the first half but sputtered after the break. Guards didn't play well. Doyle alone had 8 turnovers. I think she needs to toughen up. She winces with the slightest of contact, closes her eyes when attempting a layup. That said, she did get knocked around pretty hard tonight.

I think half of Kathleen's turnovers were hockey body checks.
When I rewatch, I'm going to count the number of elbows thrown by PSU on drives. That was their weapon of choice to get open.

It also explains why they are in the top 5 nationally in FT attempts. They were creating contact on every drive.

Glad we were able to hang on and win. 19-6 now with a 20 RPI.

I liked that most of the Iowa players showed some toughness battling against all the elbows and shoving, especially Chase since she normally wilts against it. Penn St. players acted shocked when they were actually called for it, wasn't as bad as the Drake game but not far off either. I think half of Kathleen's turnovers were deflected passes when trying to initiate the fast break.

Didn't Sam Logic's younger sister also play at Upper Iowa?

I stand corrected. Brette Logic played at St. Ambrose.

It seemed like women players for Iowa and Penn State were slipping on the Carver floor on the side of the flame display for player announcements. Is it leaving a film on the floor? I could do without the fire if it meant fewer falls.

At Thursday's game, I think I identified Amanda shooting issue. She has a very slow set up for her shot. In the first half, she had the play where she got the offensive rebound along the baseline, was wide open and looking to pass, but then set up to shoot. She was very deliberate in getting her elbow in and behind the shot. In other situations when she has less time, she doesn't get that elbow in and it effects her accuracy. I know that is pretty technical, but it is very hard to change someone's shot and speed up this process. Hopefully she can improve this as having another outside shooter would be a welcome addition

Just me, but I would like to see Amanda as a 4 next year, splitting with Stewart at that position. We will have plenty of guards next year. I think she's a good defender and for sure a good rebounder and finisher around the rim.

What Amanda does very well is hunt down rebounds. She has a knack for running to a spot where the rebound will end up. Reminds me of Kachine Alexander in that way. While others are caught flat footed looking at the shot, she is on the move , going after the ball.
Too often players on the perimeter are slow to react and rebounds are lost. But Kachine followed her shots and calculated where the shot would end up if it missed. That is how a 5-9 guard ends up 3rd on the all-time rebounding list with over 900.

Tomi, as a transfer in to Carmel, has had to take a secondary role to Amy Dilk, the Michigan recruit. I think Tomi is just as good, but Dilk gets most of the ink.

I agree with BG & think it will help Amanda too so she can go off the dribble more often. There really isn't another "4" that will be on the roster next season to backup the Senior posts either. Monika will have to get some minutes to help her develop & from what I've seen of Logan Cook it will take some time before she is ready to see the floor.

Here is an interesting toy. Plug in your projected winners and it will do a tournament bracket.

For the games that haven't been played, click on your pick to win. The box will turn red.
When you have picked all your winners, hit submit. It will pop up what the B1G tournament bracket would look like.

No BTN or BTN+ tomorrow for the game? I guess the high school gym did it.

Never mind, it is on BTN+'s schedule, even though Iowa's website does not list it.
