WBB 2017-18 Season

Kind of a nice gym for HS, although it looked like it had posts like the old Fieldhouse.

Yet another 20 turnover game. That will come back to bite us eventually. Although despite being last in the B10 in turnover margin, we are first in assist/turnover ratio. That might be why the staff appears to tolerate the sometimes ugly-looking passes.

Here is an interesting toy. Plug in your projected winners and it will do a tournament bracket.

For the games that haven't been played, click on your pick to win. The box will turn red.
When you have picked all your winners, hit submit. It will pop up what the B1G tournament bracket would look like.
Iowa , Maryland and OSU win out, I think Hawks get 4 seed and double bye.

The turnovers are irksome. Especially when half of them are unforced.
They shot the ball well, but only got 49 shots.
Not one of their better efforts. It is a W. And that makes 20 of them for the year. If they can win these last 3, and things fall right, they could be as high as a 3 seed.

Gustafson moved past Toni Foster (1,606 points from 1989-93) into No. 8 on Iowa's all-time career scoring list. Gustafson has 1,626 career points.
She also moved to No. 4 on Iowa's all-time career rebounds list, surpassing Morgan Johnson (886 from 2010-13) and Foster (887). Gustafson has 901 career rebounds.

Oak, what rank is Megan likely to finish the year at for scoring and rebounding ? She will have at least 5 more games this year. Thanks.

She has a ways to go to get to 6th now, but win a couple tournament games she could get to 5th this year.

Ally - 2102
Haugejorde - 2059
Meder - 1906
Printy - 1841
Edwards - 1821
Lillis - 1762
Price - 1742
Gustafson - 1626

She'll get to 2nd in rebounds this year.

Haugejorde - 1067
Logic - 922
Alexander - 910
Gustafson - 901

Minnesota beat Michigan last night. The Gophers has 4 losses in the conference. They will play Maryland at home. I expect them to lose that game, but no other ones. Purdue has 5 losses but will have to play at Maryland and Ohio State. Nebraska has 3 losses but will play at Indiana, home against Penn State and at Maryland. I don't see them lose more than 2 games. I think Iowa will have to win all 3 remaining games, including at Rutgers, to get the No. 4 seed. Iowa wins the tie breaker against Minnesota due to a win vs. Ohio State. Nebraska wins tie breakers against Iowa or Minnesota because it was 3:0 against the other two teams. Of course Minnesota has to lose to Maryland first, which is not a guarantee.

Would the 5 seed be better for Iowa? Minnesota-Iowa is the likely 4-5 second-round game. Would it be better to play a game before facing Minnesota, which will be a tough out? The Gophers are a very bad perimeter match up for Iowa.

I think Iowa's goal is to win the BTT, so playing one less game will help in the long run, particularly given the short bench. I don't think Iowa needs to worry about beating Minnesota in order to get into the NCAA.

Is the 4-5 game considered 2nd round or 3rd round game? The bottom 4 teams play on Wednesday.

Ideally, the Hawkeyes could avoid having to play both OSU and Maryland but they will need to beat one of them in any event to win the tourney, in all likelihood. Fun for fans to play this speculation but the team needs to focus on WINNING and deal with how it plays out later. A three way tie for third place is realistically available and must be their only goal right now!

I have been playing the speculation game too, but it is more unpredictable than ever. Purdue got upset twice at home in the last week, but tonight they are giving Maryland all they can handle on the road. With the exception of 0-12 Illinois either outcome is possible in any given game. Iowa just has to keep winning and hope for more upsets around the conference.

Well, Purdue just won at Maryland. Maybe Maryland will now wake up and beat Minnesota, and Ohio State will pay attention and beat Purdue.

Any hope of a double-bye rides on Minnesota losing to Maryland (and Indiana), but dang they are looking good.

Carly Mohns is listed as a redshirt Jr, but Bluder just said that they are honoring her and Cooley on senior night. Is Mohns not coming back next season?

Last I knew Mohns had not decided. Bluder has said previously that she's welcome back if she wants to.

When I spoke to her during the golf outing, she was really hinting that she would graduate and move on.

Megan had an off game (for her) with only 25 points and 8 rebounds.;)
Of course she only played 26 minutes in the blow out win.
Lexi found her shooting touch, with 5 threes! She said she worked on it with the week off. 21-6. Five straight.

Maryland lost at Minnesota. Won't you know it, they might lose the next two games, at Michigan and vs. Nebraska, and end up with 5 losses. It could be Ohio State, Minnesota and Nebraska as the top three. Mercifully Ohio State did beat Purdue to give them 6 losses.

Maryland hasn't been the same since they lost their PG to injury. They lost a lot from last years team and don't have the depth.

Thanks for posting that link, I didn't know she had knee trouble in high school also.

She's persevered and she has certainly given all of us glimpses of what might have been if she would , could have had 4 injury free years. She has been a joy to watch in those few minutes for me.

Carly is very athletic. And unafraid. Even with her injuries she doesn't hesitate to go flying after a loose ball. She does well with her minutes.

Talking about injuries and being fearless, I feel Tania Davis does need to be more careful next year. I believe both of her injuries were caused by a foul from behind while she's attempting a layup. She is just too light, so a collision that usually does not cause much damage on a normal sized player may be dangerous to her, especially from behind.

Tania gets hammered a lot (with no call many times). I cringe every time. Most of the time she bounces right back to her feet. Unfortunately, twice she hasn't. But that is her game. i don't think she would feel right not going all out to the hoop.

Her knee injuries weren’t because of her being hammered. She landed wrong. So many acls are noncontact.

I would call being hit and sent sprawling being hammered.
I agree , but I do think she needs to pull up short and take her shot to avoid heavy collisions, she is too valuable. I noticed both the Minnesota and Penn State guards often pulled up instead of going all out.

I think the game has become too contact oriented, and don't understand why it has been tolerated for so long. My current best guess is many if not most coaches, despite the occasional public comments about no-calls, are more concerned about players having to sit due to foul trouble. Plus many teams see being tough as an advantage. For example, I read an article a couple of months ago about Missouri and how they have sometimes been labeled a thug team. One of their players replied that they take pride in taking away things their opponents want to do. It would have been interesting to see how we'd have done against them had they not been upset by WKU in the tournament, because they seem to be the sort of team we have trouble with.

Regarding Tania's injury against UNI, I thought at the time that it was the sort of incidental contact that happens dozens of times in every game, and was surprised it resulted in a torn ACL. But then not all ACL tears come from contact. I was at a GTL game when Johanna Solverson suffered her third tear, and she was just running down the court.

Zion Sanders was put on scholarship yesterday during practice. See the video on the Iowa WBB Facebook page to see her and all her teammates' excitement. It was obviously great for team morale going into the final stretch.

Maybe oakhawk can answer a few questions. Why now? Coach Bluder said it was for "this particular year." So can it be retroactive? Does that mean not for next year as of now?

Not sure if it is for 2nd semester only, and for this year only. They certainly have scholarships they can give. Next year adds 4, while losing 2. So 13 spoken for.

I thought Lisa could sign up to 15 no? I realize LB hasn't gone up to 15 in a long time.

Unless there are some sort of internal budget consequences for the WBB program, I'd think a scholarship for Saunders would be a no-brainer, given the NCAA allotment.

Lisa could decide to keep her on scholarship from here on out, she does have the allotment of 15 to use. She rarely uses all 15 saying that it is hard to keep 15 players happy with regards to playing time. It has certainly come back to haunt her several seasons due to injuries.

Zion has already played more meaningful minutes than Hailey Schneden ever did and she had a scholarship for multiple years after joining as a walkon
