WBB 2017-18 Season

Wow, it happened! Minnesota lost at home to Indiana. So, if Michigan can beat Maryland on Senior day, and Iowa can win its final two games at Rutgers and at home against the said Indiana team, there's a very good chance of Iowa getting the 4th seed. I hope this is a strong enough incentive for Iowa to play its best in the next two. After all, Minnesota lost on its Senior night tonight.

I believe for that to happen, Nebraska has to lose their final two games, at home against Penn State and on the road at Maryland. The problem for Iowa in getting a double bye is they lose the tiebreakers to both Nebraska and a tie with Nebraska and Minnesota as I figure it. Or it is probably all a moot point anyway, as the upsets keep coming.

I am more worried about Indiana at home on Saturday than Rutgers there tonight. Indiana went from 2-6 in the first half of the conference season to 7-0 so far the second. Their two seniors, Buss and Cahill, are putting on a clinic, despite playing 40 minutes per game. They are doing everything possible to play their way into the NCAA's. But Iowa has something to play for too.

Dargan Southard in the PC broke this down after the Wisconsin game. Story is here:

Hawk Central story

According to this, Iowa wins tiebreak over Minnesota if Ohio State finishes ahead of Maryland. Iowa would then get 4 seed, Minnesota 5 and Nebraska 3. Indiana will be a very difficult game. They have won 7 in a row as others have said, and their last loss was by 4 points at Maryland.

Hawks just need to take care of business last 2 games and see what happens.

It's all an exercise in futility anyway, but the likely scenario he left out was a 3-way tie for third with Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska in which Iowa would be the one left out.

However, as you said, first Iowa has to win tonight and then again on Saturday against the hottest team in the league.

In a three-way tie, Nebraska wins the tie breaker because it won all games against Minnesota and Iowa. Then it's Minnesota vs. Iowa. They split the games, and Iowa wins tiebreaker if Ohio State moves ahead of Maryland, since Iowa beat Ohio State and Minnesota didn't.

I thought if there was a three-way tie, it goes by combined head-to-head records against the other two. Iowa loses that one.

Edit: I checked and they must have changed it. That is the way it used to be.

Rock Island (24-7). They will return to Champaign on Thursday to battle Edwardsville (28-0), a 51-40 winner over Chatham Glenwood . That game will tip off at 7 p.m.

Looks like this is still true:
  • B. After the top team among the tied teams is determined, the second team is ranked by its record among the original tied teams, not the head-to-head record vs. the remaining team(s).
So I was wrong, Iowa still loses out to Minnesota.

Unless...Maryland loses to Michigan, Ohio state loses to Penn State, and Illinois beats Minnesota.
Then the Hawks would be the #4
A long shot.
Only need Illinois to beat Minnesota....long shot.
Or Nebraska to win at Maryland (maybe not such a long shot...)

Honestly, I'm more concerned about losing and falling into the mess of teams with six losses. Indiana is playing better than anyone right now.

OTOH, last I checked our RPI was 21, so unless we lose out we won't need to sweat an NCAA invitation. Guessing we'll be seeded somewhere in the middle range, so that the first game will be winnable and the second very difficult against a 1 or 2 seed. Beats the WNIT though.

Dang you Vivian. Give me a 96-92 game any day.
The announcer is definitely not from the Upper Midwest....Goostafson..:) Maybe "Goose" should be her nickname.

Well, we can hope Nebraska either win both remaining games or lose both... Iowa may end up tied with Maryland and Minnesota for third. Not good either.

Why, that's just how they say it in Sweden. But really, it should have been Gustafsdotter;)

I checked the roster and we only have 11 players listed. Tania is out, so without zion we couldn't even scrimmage!! Lisa needs to use at least 12 every year. It seems women get knee injuries much more often than men, so you can kind of count on losing someone for part of the season.

I believe they have a scrimmage team of guys they can go up against in practice. Plus they have added walk-ons mid-season a couple of times. Still, if it were me I'd go with a larger roster.

Row55 you are correct about male trainers they scrimmage against. During the football season Lisa ran open scrimmages on game day. The male trainers were on the court.

Just watched the game on BTN2GO. Heck of a comeback. I really liked Amanda Ollinger's floor game. 28 minutes and 8 rebounds. She didn't score but she was what I would call very active. Looking forward to the next 2 years for her.

Guards being sloppy with the ball almost cost Hawks the game. If the guards ever learn to take care of the ball this could be a very, very good team.

Amanda and Hannah have been giving the Hawks some solid play at the 4.
Amanda has been mostly subbing for Lex lately. She’s been very active and adds a lot, even when she doesn’t score. Hoping that the increased time will lead to greater confidence and that will help with her offense.

Amanda took a charge late in the game or overtime which was huge. Also, the O rebound in OT when we were up four with a little over a minute left was huge, too. She's really coming on strong.

As great as season as this has been (22-6, 10-5) I keep thinking "what if" Tania and Mak had stayed healthy. It feels like this could have been a Sweet 16 team.

After Tania went down, then Mac was gone for a few games, and somewhere in there Lex was sick, someone said the stomach flu, and whatever, it shut her 3 pt game down for awhile as well.

Thought it was amusing. Vera Jones the broadcaster was asked how she would coach to stop Megan. Her reply was to tickle her and tell her jokes cuz nothing else was working

Fantastic team effort! Shut down an Indiana team that had won 8 in a row. Buss for Indiana was putting up over 30 per game lately. Makenzie and Kathleen took her out of the game. Megan got punched and shoved, but they still couldn't stop her. Chase has been playing the best basketball of her life. Getting in the scuffles and not shying away. hitting those beautiful mid-range jumpers. Carly came in and grabbed 6 rebounds in 17 minutes. Zion played a lot due to Amanda's two quick fouls and was solid on taking care of the ball. Kathleen took numerous hard hits and came up fighting. Hannah gave a spark with 10.
Short-handed against a hot team and the Hawks ruled the court.

Best job I have seen (only watched 10/15 games) all year in taking care of the ball. They played great today and the defense was outstanding IMO.

Thanks Chase and Beef!

Indiana was also short handed, but they didn’t have Megan. She can turn a so-so team into a Big Ten tournament champion. It’s amazing how all the other coaches devise plans to stop her and none of them work.

So, Illinois gave it a shot. Lost.
Thursday at 1:30 it is. I actually don't mind the extra game. Get to adapt to the tournament environment and hopefully add a win against a team that has been at the bottom. Then Minnesota on Friday.
