Definition(s) of rumor
From Wiki
A
rumor (
American English) or
rumour (
British English;
see spelling differences) is "
a tall tale of explanations of events circulating from person to person and pertaining to an object, event, or issue in public concern."
[1]
In the
social sciences, a rumor
involves some kind of a statement whose veracity is not quickly or ever confirmed. In addition, some scholars have identified rumor as a subset of
propaganda.
Sociology,
psychology, and communication studies have widely varying definitions of rumor.
[2]
Rumors are also often discussed with regard to "misinformation" and "disinformation" (the former often seen as simply false and the latter seen as deliberately false, though usually from a government source given to the media or a foreign government).
[3] Rumors thus have often been viewed as particular forms of other communication concepts.

talk or

2: a statement or report current
without known authority for its truth
- a story or statement in general circulation without confirmation or certainty as to facts
- gossip; hearsay
- Archaic (rumor mill) a continuous, confused noise; clamor; din
The point of this is to clear up a misconception or false notion that you have with regard to the facts of the talk, opinion, gossip, hearsay, etc that you have received from your unknown/unnamed source; which is to say that it (the ‘tale’ or story) is first and foremost, one-sided, meaning that it is not ‘the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth’ and that it is likely either simply false (misinformation) or deliberately false (disinformation - or in other words, a lie). This is of course assuming that you are not the original source of the rumor, which is entirely possible. Either way, it is not fair, reasonable or even justified to start or perpetuate any rumors. It is in fact plain wrong, unjust and vile. By your very own admission, you are guilty of it, and
that is the truth. Shame on you.
