WBB Transfer Portal Targets 2025-2026+

I think she mentioned Pg and forward right at the end of the presser. I will listen again later.

Agree! Jan is talking about positions that "don't have a lot of depth" behind them for 2 more added pieces.

From the transcript:
"My model will always be to try to develop but like we're graduating Syd at forward and we don't have a lot of depth at the one, right."

"I love our freshmen and I love the incomers and if we can just get a couple portal pieces I think could' be really fun."

She specifically targets a 1 (PG) and the other could infer with the word "but" after try to develop, she's also targeting Syd's position for her graduating. Now whether they find a replacement (starter eg Lucy) and/or backup (with potential to start if our off/in-season development doesn't progress as expected) for these two positions is another question and it could also depend on how the bidding war pans out.

Jan has always said develop first (perceived as less expensive coz culture courtship can keep $ lower) then add portal pieces (perceived as expensive in the speed dating world and less culture is a priority for someone just wanting to get $) to close gaps that didn't get closed during the season as expected or graduating without depth behind them.

"My model will always be to try to develop ..."

This is the part rubs me the wrong way and that's the word never. From the transcript:
"We'll be looking the portal but I'm also I'm never going to be coach instantaneous they want just oh go win. I want to win in a the way I've always done it and that's build people up develop them add a piece here or there that's what I'm going to try to do."

Jan said in an interview you need to change or else you got to get out it. Another time she said you got to change or you're going to get left behind. Thought she understood the cutthroat nature of NIL when she made these statements. To me that meant you better get in portal and participate vigorously or you'll get left behind. Or if you count too much on developing, it too can come back to haunt you and you'll be left behind even more coz the best teams are adding portal players to beat other best teams adding portal players.

Just so you understand how this works. Outside of the Elite top schools this year of UConn, SC, ND and TX, the other 12 schools have at least 2 of more portal transfers. That means 75% of the Sweet 16 schools have 2 or more transfers. If you dial in a little closer, you'll notice ~19% of the schools have all 5 starters from 5 different schools. The sweet spot is 7 teams that have 2 transfers. That's almost 50% of the Sweet 16 teams. Follow the blueprint...

Sweet 16 Starting Lineups by Original School

The # of Schools/Teams Breakdown:
5 Schools: 3 Teams (4 - 5 Transfers)
4 Schools: 2 Team (3 Transfers)
3 Schools: 7 Teams (2 Transfers)
2 Schools: 4 Teams (1 Transfer)
1 School: 0 Teams (0 Transfers and all on-campus development)

She better land another Top 10 - 15 class of commits again for '26 and a couple of great portal players in the off-season or I think the wheels start to slowly come off the cart.

We'll see what she does over this next year on development of portal/current players along with new signed commits. She needs to get this right over this next year, imho. We'll see if she can keep the momentum climbing with higher rated commits or not. This year sure seems like we could tweeter either way on the future direction this program is headed. Let's hope Jan makes all the right calls and she elevates us to new heights over the next year.

I believe many of us have felt the 26 class is going to be the barometer on where the program goes in the future and I still feel that way. Can the portal be a key player, absolutely but I think the 26 class is vital to determine how Iowa will position itself on the national stage. Jan is fishing for trophy’s, Let’s hope she can reel a couple in.

. . . . Be part of the solution, keep your seats, our fan base is a big plus for Iowa and attractive to recruits. Plan on contributing to NIL nice and fun things aren’t free. My top two passions are fishing and Iowa WBB. I spend more each year on fishing than the team. I am going to adjust that some
Agree. Give today to Swarm and designate at least some for WBB. Just made my annual donation.

I have questions in regard to Guyton but I really think it’s unfair to fully judge her based on a freshmen season that she didn’t get any summer work and no fall practice reps. She literally came into her initial season trying to make the transition in live game scenarios.
True statement. Now we'll see if she puts in the work in the off season.

I just looked at their roster page. It only shows coaches, no players at all. Would think that presents a challenge for their AD.

Yep, it looks like they made the wrong hire for their new head coach this season if no one wants to stick around. Heck, some of those women know they could possibly start next year and yet they all bolted.

Oops just discovered it's even worse than I thought. Only 1 of their top 9 scorers is a senior this year. Gut feeling there's probably more to this story than wins and loses when 5 of those 8 players are most likely going to be starters next year..

In the portal from UNI. ACL injury after 3 games this year; averaged 15 ppg/9 rpg previous 2 seasons. Would have 1 year left.
I was disappointed they didn't recruit her more in high school. My recollection, though, is that she was slow before the ACL tear. And, a mediocre 3pt%, albeit one good season.

She's been playing center in a power forward's body. Very strong. Can step outside and hit some 3's. Not much vertical. I'm guessing Jan is aiming higher.

I think she'd be a great fit at one of the better mid-majors, like South Dakota State or Missouri State. I doubt she goes to another MVC school.

I say pass in terms of next year. Iowa needs another guard who can play off the bounce. Seems like a replacement for McCabe. This description from Talia Goodman is not encouraging:

Scouting report from a coach in her conference: “She’s an elite shooter. Moves better than people give credit for – needs to develop off the bounce, but can flat out make shots.”
43.5% of her shots not 3's, so must have at least some ability to create for herself.
(Referring to Kailey Woolston)

Is Indiana losing multiple players to the portal or transferring? I may have missed that.
Indiana with 3 portal entries today, on top of losing 3 starters (Parrish, Striplin and Moore-McNeil). Guessing Moren is looking for a portal haul, given her inability to leverage the Mackenzie Holmes era to attract elite high school recruits.

Anyone know why basically the entire team is transferring? Every Indiana media source I search has a subscription so I cannot find the info

None of the other three were starters. Seems more like Creaning to me. Moren wants to go all out in the transfer portal.

That is the thing we don’t know, Maybe the players were unhappy and chose to leave or maybe they had a post season evaluation with the coach and she basically told them I don’t see a path for you to get significant minutes moving forward.

I had Garzon was looking elsewhere, but hadn't heard the other 3. I wonder why so many leaving, the head coach?

I heard Garzon is meeting with the staff today so we will find out if she decides to enter or not soon. Apparently they put together a nice NIL to try to convince her to stay. We shall see.

Doogan is an attractive "get", however I see a fit problem, in that I am sure she is looking for an assured level of playing time. If she plays the 4 in our team's system, does Hannah sit? She draws fire from the "experts" on this forum, however JJ is not going to bench her... she starts. If she plays the 3, who does she replace? Feuerbach, our best defender? McCabe? Maybe, but how disruptive would that be for team chemistry? Stremlow, does she get stuffed down the waiting list for playing time? Neither Feuerbach or McCabe have the quickness to start at the 2 spot. How does this affect Teagan's potential development? There is a need to add depth at the 4, but I am not sure a player looking for the playing time Doogan would wants fits the bill.
Hopefully it’s obvious to the returning players that they really need more scoring for next years team. I know Deal is coming next year but they need more than just her.

I disagree about Kylie not having the quickness to play the two. I think adding Doogan actually adds a lot of versatility to the line up. Whether you add a player in the portal or if you add 5 star talent on the recruiting front you create competition, I like loyalty as much as the next person but IMO Jan’s number one priority is to put the best possible team on the floor next year. Teams like UConn and S.Carolina etc, etc, create top level competition on their roster, You can either let your feelings get hurt or you can accept challenges and strive to get better.

Bottom line for me, Iowa still has question marks at the 3 and 4 spots, A player like Doogan helps address both issues by adding one player.
This. The McCabe or someone not being happy really isn't Jans job. Its putting together the best roster to win games, and you could clearly see the holes this year. Losing Lucy and Syd, (two of the three top players) just leaves more questions, on who will score. Kylie is certainly "quick enough " to play the two, (while McCabe really isn't well rounded enough), BUT she's not a primary scorer. Someone is going to be back on the bench anyway, assuming Guyton starts, (which I think she leaves if not, which is her decision), because Deal will most certainly be starting.

We'll know soon enough what JJ's priorities are.

Can't expect Deal to be a difference maker right off the jump.

There are gaps to fill.
Honestly I do expect Deal to be a difference maker and to start day 1. She's by far the highest rated recruit under Bluder/Jensen, (after CC22) and she excelled against better overall competition in high school then Clark did. Mcdonalds AA, and USA team member, Cali large class player of the year?

I have known Grace since she was a kid and lots of people underestimated her. Honestly I didn't know she would be as strong of a post player at UNI as she turned out to be.

Being an instant starter as a freshman is challenging.

Being an instant starter as a pg doubles the pressure.
I think JJ absolutely needs to bring in a portal pg, otherwise you're expecting Guyton to suddenly become an effective pg, which seems wishful thinking right now.
JJ doesn't have the luxury of waiting to see if AG develops over the summer.
