We have the most underachieving recruiting staff in the country

When KF mentioned BF knows what works here and what doesn't, that was his cue saying recruiting will stay exactly where it's at & that the staff is completely fine with that. They are deathly afraid of another 4* Cedric Everson stepping foot on campus again.

This is bullsh*t. I'm so sick and tired of our fans accepting this by using the same old tired worn out excuses.. "Blah blah we've never recruited well, we aren't a blueblood, we are better at developing players" and on and on..

I see the dipsh*t nub fans swarm our board throwing their recruit list in our face lately, and while we fire back with "40-10" and "3 of the last 4", I'm gonna tell ya we won't keep continuing to kick their ass at this pace. It just won't happen. Stars do matter. Imagine what we would do with their recruiting class. We would compete for a Big Ten title on a semi regular basis if we finished around the Top 15-25 each year the way that we develop our guys.

If you think we can continue to roll over those red headed step sisters to the west with a roster full of 5.5 & 5.6 players, you're gonna be sadly mistaken. Keep dreaming. While we promote in house with more of the same Ferentz brand, they go out and get that DB coach who is an animal on the west coast & then Diaco who I WOULD LOVE to have @ Iowa. There is no sustainability to this method, eventually we are gonna square up vs nubby when they have a QB that isn't injured or mildly retarded, as they are stockpiling rivals100 & 250 talent at that position and Armstong has graduated.

Hell yes it's fun to laugh at them and beating nubby will always be a huge thing for us, but I'm here to tell you we can't keep this up by striking out time and time again on the recruiting trail...putting forth minimal effort during the 'in season' period...and doing all the typical Ferentz brand bullsh*t that leads to having a class ranked 60th at the end of the year!! THIS IS IOWA AND WE DESERVE BETTER - WE CAN DO BETTER!!!

We need to be getting the best assistants money can buy. We need to win head to head recruiting matchups vs these rivals. We need to go toe to toe with dominant teams on the trail and pull some serious talent off the coast, not scrambling to flip MAC level athletes in January.

We are Iowa. We deserve better. There is just too much complacency on this board when it comes to settling for these severely mediocre recruiting classes that a head coach with 1,000% job security is giving us. We deserve better. Kirk is a good man, but he has our program in cruise control.
Hey Chuckie, I suggest you volunteer to assist the staff in recruiting. With your vast expertise, you could have recruiting turned around in no time. I'm sure with your ability to recruit , we would get all 4 or 5 star recruits. Go get em!

No....don't come on and make things up. Not one single coach on the planet would say this.

They also used this point to justify the bowl losses. "We lost to teams that are out of our league". I couldn't make this up if I tried.

I'll bet you thought these were some witty replies, huh..

Tough to find a more worthless response than this, folks..

If it gets too tough, find another team? You make me sick. And even a simpleton like yourself should be able to see the lack of effort our staff exercises in recruiting.

You and your over obsession with a game makes me sick. I think you need professional help if the whims of college kids gives you this much grief.

So,by not bitching and complaining and letting our voices hear, do you think there would be change? Some fans expect more than the status quo. Most fans have the expectation not to lose to FCS schools. Some fans expect a prolific offense and not the garbage we seem to put out despite always having a pretty good offensive line. Some fans expect a vertical passing attack. Some fans expected us to cash in on our 12-2 season and see an uptick in recruiting.
The people who bitch here just enjoy bitching, some of them think if they bitch enough, someone will listen, someone will see it for something other then it is.

Its not that the rest of us don't experience the same frustrations and disappointment, we just know that very little is ever accomplish with the kind of bitching you offer. Its not constructive, Its not helpful.

Does anyone bitching here think Kirk, anyone on his staff or Barta ever read these posts? Do you honestly think anyone in power to change things actually listens to you here or cares what you say in these stupid forums? Thank God the recruits and their parents don't come out to these forums to read this crap. Or do they?

No, no, please keep complaining, it's the only way to get this joke of a program turned around. I sure hope you and all the rest of the real fans hold yourselves to the same standards you expect out of the football team.

Our head coach wins games and builds 2 star nobodys into linebackers & offensive lineman in the NFL. Purdue has hired coaches because they could recruit, and it hasn't helped that program. Ferentz cant make 5 star come here, he gets the best out of what he can get. Do u really think he is so terrible? y don't u go to the big city schools in Florida, Texas, and Alabama and try recruiting the best 18 year old black athletes in the US to leave their homes to move halfway across the country to middle of nowhere in a state with nothing but corn and white people. Add the fact that no matter what the team does people like u won't stop bitching about a coach that has been successfull & a program that is an NFL factory. Ferentz is an o-line specialist. That is literally the only selling point he can pitch to kids that have the option to go anywhere. Y else would anyone chooseto be surrounded by rasists, boredom, amd cold shitty weather. To act like an Iowa state coach who got hired 3 minutes ago is a better option than kirk is borderline retarded.

I have heard from a coaches mouth that they consider their peers to be Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, & Minnesota. Not OSU or UM. If they are better than the former, they consider themselves successful. There lies our problem or our successes, depends which side of the tracks you view this from.
It's all about expectations at the top. KF's latest contract bares the truth to what you say here. 7 wins is the weather mark of success according to the contract proffered by Barta and signed by KF. That's basically a 3-1 OOC record with wins over Indiana, Purdue, Illinois and Minnesota. Or some combination of.

Agree with the OP even though I didn't read past the first line. All we've been landing are walk-ons and we're now sitting on our hands hoping and hoping that an IC kid will announce tomorrow that he's decommitting from NIU for Iowa.

Hopefully we land Bryan and Martin. But I have my doubts. And yes, our coaches absolutely SUCK at closing the deal, which is why 3 days from signing day we're 7 guys short and we end up hoping and praying we can sway guys from Kent St. and NIU. Pathetic.

I don't know what constitutes a peer, as I look at everyone in the Big Ten as a peer. But but in regards to resources and ease in recruiting and really winning that coach is 100% correct. Do you think Iowa has the same advantages as Michigan and Ohio State? Thats crazy. Ohio State could only recruit 120 miles in any direction from its campus and come in with top 15 recruiting classes yearly.

Coffee's for closers. Our coaches are Jack Lemmon...

Yet they pull in nearly all the in state top talent and then go around the country doing the same, year after year. They compete for top kids because they know they provide the best chance at a NC. Oh and the more 4-5* they put on scholly, the fewer for everyone else.

Let's see, Nebraska has 11 commits rated 5.6 and lower, Iowa has 10. OMG, how can we possibly compete?

These recruiting threads are total nonsense.

Very true and that was not the only incident that could have blown up and cost KF his job. Bad sex assault stuff happened with djk and some others too I think. Not a great thing if his job is the only concern with these instances.

You do know we only play 3 OOC games, right ?

Simple way to stop people from bitching about recruiting. recruit better. Even if they land Martin these coaches are not doing well. We have great facilities, great fan support, great stadium that is getting better, a history of going bowling. No excuses. We should be doing better.

I listen to Tom Lukenbill, recruiting analyst, on Sirus's radio College Sports Show. He was stating why Nebraska would never be a national power. 1st reason was cable TV. Saying that Nebraska could not hog the lime light like they did in the 60's and 70's. 2nd was recruiting. Going to the Big 10 they loss Texas. Also recruiting in a smaller population area and competing against the border States for the same recruits doesn't help. Throw in Michigan, MSU, and ND it really becomes difficult. Finally he said recruits don't consider Nebraska a national power anymore. He said every 3-5 yrs Nebraska could content for a Big 10 title but that was about it.

A lot of what Tom said about Nebraska can be said about Iowa. The Midwest just doesn't have enough top recruits to go around. Unless a team can recruit nationally it will never become a Alabama, Ohio State, or Clemson. Nebraska has the tradition and still has problems. Iowa is not much different. Iowa has never had the exposure to recruit nationally with or without Ferentz I don't see anything changing anytime soon.

I don't think Kirk or Barta reads this, but trust me there are plenty of people not too far from them who do, but that is not necessarily the point of why people post things on this site (good or bad). This is a Hawkeye forum on a website largely dedicated to football recruiting. Where the hell else would people go to be excited or complain about Iowa football recruiting? JFC....sometimes I wonder about you people.

You mean that your older sister's high school math teacher has the same mechanic as Coach Ferentz's second cousin....and the math teacher reads this forum? Wow.....you are insane!!!!

I think this staff is great at identifying talent and getting on them early. The problem this staff has is holding on to the commitment and turning kids at the end. Some of that has to do with their judgement and their offense.

One thing that Iowa doesn't utilize enough is early enrollment which would allow them to go after more recruits in the current class. More and more schools are doing it. especially the top recruiting schools.

There have been several posts about recruiting. Yes, Iowa is good at finding diamonds in the rough. Yes, we can develop players. When you cut to the chase, Iowa should have stronger recruiting classes. No ifs, ands, or buts. We have the facilities, fans, and coaching salaries. Iowa should never have recruiting classes ranked in the 50s ... Never.

I disagree. I think Iowa does a really good job, just like Wisconsin does, in recruiting to its system. Iowa knows what it's doing, clearly. Would they take big, badder dudes if they had the chance? Most likely, IF those players fit into the system they want to run. But Iowa has an identity on both sides of the ball, which is something Nebraska lacks at this point. Nebraska may pull in a higher rated class than Iowa, but without an identity (I'm hoping we can begin to develop that more on both sides), it doesn't matter. Has it yielded national championships? No, it has not. But it has yielded a pretty consistent product. I'm not saying Iowa couldn't recruit better, but IMO they aren't recruiting as terribly as some want to believe.

I did laugh at your QB comment and I do think that will make a big difference for Nebraska establishing a consistent identity. This year's QB (most likely Tanner Lee) may not be a physical freak, but I think he has the tools to make the decisions and throws that Langsdorf is looking for him to make.

Do you understand the difference between a 2 star and a 4 star athlete
The four star usually has a head start in athleticism usually. But, our coaches have an outstanding track record of identifying and developing talent. NFL talent.

It's surprising that they don't recruit better based on their production, but it's not for a lack of trying.

That said I hope Iowa brings on a great recruiter/average pass game coordinator to go along with a strong coach who has sent players to the NFL.

No, I think stars matter. I don't agree, however, that stars are the end all be all. The trend you say is unsustainable has been going on KF's entire tenure minus one top ten class. I don't think I need to name all the accomplishments he and his team have earned during that time. That doesn't mean I don't have my criticisms of the program. I agree that recruiting does need to get better. Despite this, I like to look at the bigger picture, and I think this is a really solid class. When looking at recruiting, I like to break it down by what I worry about at Iowa. The coaching staff as shown they can develop very good offensive and defensive linemen no matter how many stars they have. Phil Parker has put many defensive backs in the NFL who were two/three stars. Iowa also has a good track record of turning low rated linebackers into NFL players. Same with tight ends. Iowa has usually been solid at quarterback as well as running back. Wide receiver is the position I worry about the most, but I really like Brandon Smith in this class. I wish Iowa got all 4 and 5 star recruits, but the staff has shown they can find and develop solid players at most positions.

The comment referring to the trend being unsustainable is entirely about your original comment regarding our head to head results with Nebraska, not just in general.

We've benefited greatly from their poor QB play in each of the last few contests. To think that we can continue to go head to head (we are tied at 3-3 overall) and consistently win, when the discrepancy between each program's infusion of talent brought into the program each year is so very different, is just plain foolish.

Eventually their QB play will be a strength, vs a weakness, judging by the amount of talent they are brining in combined with their QB coach who has a long history of churning out excellent quarterbacks.

To think that "oh well, we've always recruited this way and they've always recruited that way" and our past results have been acceptable, that it translates into future success soley due to that reason, is pure and utter nonsense!

So chuck how is bitching about it in another retread of a retread post gonna get anything done? It seems like you guys doing all the constant complaining about recruiting, nepotism, bad coaching, etc, etc are really getting stuff done about it aren't you. I guess I'm just not a real fan because I'm content with having a clean program run by a decent human being. Gothca. I'll tuck my tail and go hide now.

You should be ashamed of yourself. It's fans like you and your kind that have allowed Ferentz to remain in his position, collecting huge pay checks, without ever feeling the pressure to improve upon what clearly hasn't worked.

We both know Iowa is notorious for scheduling a fairly tame non conference lineup, and when matched up with a more talented team haven't performed very well. Just take a look at our bowl record or our record vs marquee opponents. Kirk feasts on 7-9 wins a year and is content with running a clean program and being decent human being. Those attributes don't have to be mutually exclusive with being competitive against the stronger teams in college football, but he'll never feel the pressure to try and figure out how to take that next step, largely because of a fan base made up of people like yourself.

If the opinion of an anonymous person on a message board affects you that greatly, I suggest you step away from the keyboard for a bit. There are professionals out there who can help with that.
