Well, let's see. I am scheduled to put my dog down on Thursday because he's a threat to my son's safety and you want to talk about guns? Really? I'm the asshole here?

For some odd reason our veterinarian does not perform behavioral euthanasia, however our vet called us tonight and is going to make special consideration because he knows us and Joey so well. He's the one who put my Jack down last June.
Bummer. How did the boy handle it? It was brutal on my family the day before we put our dog down and she was very sick. I can only imagine how hard it must be for you guys with a healthy dog.
Well, Bill Guy, you did kinda come in guns blaze'n. It's pretty clear he loves his son and his dog. Not good times. I get it, though, it's the internet. We have to roll with our interpretation of what's written. From what I've read, Alaska Guy seems pretty level headed to me.
We're telling him tonight. I have no idea what I'm going to tell him. I'm just glad he has Friday off school and a good friend coming over to distract him.
Dude - This is extremely rough. Don't really have words to convey how bad I feel for everyone in your family. If you have friends that own farms you may want to make some calls. Even friends of friends. Maybe you will luck out. Keeping ya'all in my prayers.

Unrelated to this situation, but I would put a plug in for rescue dogs. I do understand allergies and various other things definitely impact the ability to go that route, but we have a family that spends thousands of dollars on Australian Shepherds and I really don't get it. We have only ever had rescue dogs (a terrier mix, then a fox terrier mix, and now two pom/spitz mixes), always smaller dogs, but they have been tremendous. There are so many in shelters. The ones we have now were bought at a huge auction (500+ dogs) by a rescue place in the KC area.

Just coming back to this thread. Really surprised you can't find a home or shelter willing to work with you on him...sorry to hear it. Good luck with the son and the fam. It sucks. You're a good dude and you've thought through everything with the right things in mind. If it's any solace, this thread has cemented you as one of three HORTers I'd have a beer with. What a consolation prize.
Not gonna lie, can't even look at those pictures you shared without eyes getting leaky. Especially as I keep up with this with a little ankle biter that spends half his day snoozing wrapped around my office chair. Prayers for what's coming up in the next 24 hours and hope you all find a last minute home.
I had one lady reach out from the San Antonio Doodles FB page and she said he's just not a candidate.
My wife spoke with 4 different trainers. 3 said no and 1 said she "thinks" she can help. A couple key things stood out in those conversations:
1 - Once you don't trust your pet, it's no longer your pet.
2 - This is the second time he's bitten and it escalated to a level 5 without knowing why. Next time will be worse.
3 - One of the trainers was a prior police dog trainer. He said Joey needed to be put in a choke hold until he nearly passed out when he attacked me, not whacked with a pillow. Joey now knows what he did worked.
All four trainers know of the training company we used and said they are highly reputable. Joey has had great training.
This whole damn think sucks. I think when I originally posted this, my heart was holding out hope. Fortunately, my brain has won out. I've learned a lot through this experience and will do some things differently next go around. We're dog people, so we'll have another at some point.
To think, our goal was to get Joey certified to go into assisted living and nursing homes with our son.

Ugh, bad deal. Been avoiding this thread bc I knew it was probably not going to end well but @alaskanseminole you're doing the right thing. That level of aggression towards you is beyond a an acceptable level of risk going forward no matter the owner.
When I was 11-12 I was bitten aggressively by a neighborhood dog (German Shepard).
My hand and arm looked similar to yours, I needed medical treatment and I still have the scars. Authorities left it to my family to decide what to do with the dog, essentially if we wanted it put down it would be. We chose not to (trying to be neighborly) and just pushed for the dog to never be allowed out of its yard. A month or so later it bit their 8 year old in the face.
There's something about a dog that crosses that threshold to that level of biting that makes it very likely to happen again.

I've been bit by 3 different dogs in my life, all German shepherds. I think they can sense my fear of them... or maybe they think I'm Jewish. Either way, not a fan.Them are bitey dogs.
Well, I prayed for a miracle and the good Lord provided one just like Abraham and Isaac. I was literally ONE hour from our scheduled appointment to have him put down.
Mosley's mom (Joey's best pal) just got back from Jamaica and wants to take Joey in and rehome him (either permanently or temporarily). She's a single pediatrician with no kids and loves him as much as her dog. She wants to bring in the one behavioral specialist we talked to who said she could help and see if we can retrain Joey with the hopes that as both Matt and Joey get older, he can return home one day.
Worst case scenario, Joey just lives out his days one street over with his best pal and a lady who loves him. She's never had an issue with Joey and has been watching him for us since he was a pup.

Sounds like the best possible outcome you could've hoped for. Do you think you or your son will visit him at all? How'd your son take the news?
Funny you should ask.
We texted his teacher and she pulled him into the hallway to tell him. She said he literally jumped up and down with excitement. We're going to get Joey moved in then take him down there for a visit after school. My wife will continue to walk both dogs each day like she always does. So we'll be able to still see Joey regularly in a more controlled and monitored way.
It's still hard, but so much better than the alternative.
