Who's Ed Martin?

PMac stat line. 31 min., 7 pt., 3 rb., 0 fouls and torched on D.

Nothing new.
Butler is not good. That’s a brutal loss, especially after what a good comeback Butler had. I had the game on but wasn’t paying attention. Butler was down maybe 15 with under ten minutes left, then up 5 with maybe two or three minutes left, and then lost.

It was a heck of a comeback. Spent it getting it back and didn't have anything left in the tank late.

But he was getting paid & if you don't believe Iowa boosters compensated the agent, you're blind.
Walters and Bloom were sports agents who paid Harmon early to represent him. They would have met with Ronnie when he was back home in NJ or via family members. Bloom had a sports agency and had signed paid several other athletes early for future representation. Both “agents” were backed by the mafia, not boosters from Iowa. Bloom was shot dead in his CA home at the age of 34 in 1993. Walters had supposedly threatened other agents and players including to break both hands of a WR from Texas who was going to sign with another agent after taking Walter’s money. Some shady shit happened at the 1986 Rose Bowl.

0 fouls. Patrick is averse to contact.
This was always the most intriguing stat to me. The number of games in which Patrick had zero or one fouls with all of those minutes played was incredible. He averaged less than one foul per game his entire career at Iowa. He's averaging .7 this year. Gotta be some kind of modern record.

He is 11th in the country right now with .8 fouls per 40 minutes

Considering all the touch fouls you see, Patrick is a magician on defense!

In as always amazed more with his barely existent offensive rebound stats. You almost have to run away from the ball to not occasionally just have one bounce off the rim your direction. He averaged 23 minutes a game and had 5 offensive rebounds TOTAL last year.

He was running back down court as the ball was in the air.

I really miss the flying off balanced/off the wrong foot/sideways jumper through the lane clanked off the side of the rim. I don’t even blame Patrick for that. You’d think a jump stop and playing off 2 feet would’ve been coached into him at some point. Or the attention to detail defensively and the importance of rebounding

Pat's physical toughness and rebounding would have been huge in the game tonight for Iowa.

He could have had a competition with Sandfort to see who could have the most off balance shots taken

Or given up the most back cuts for layups or dunks?

I think you’re pretty much spot on. He’s a good coach. But not a great coach. With Iowa’s recruiting and budget challenges you need a Lute Olson, Ralph Miller, or Dr. Tom to a lesser extent to have above average success here.
If Fran is a good coach, then TJ over in Ames is John Wooden. Crazy talk. especially the recruiting challenges. When was the last time you were in Ames? How in God's name you get guys to come to that shithole is beyond me, but they do it.
On the other hand, Iowa City has turned into a Freak show so I guess I can understand not wanting to be there.

Raveling was probably the best recruiter Iowa ever had. Lute did well with a banged up squad getting to the final 4. Ralph had that great team that averaged over 100 pts per game.

I was in Detroit during the mid 80s. When Iowa landed Roy Marble, out of Flint, local sportswriters were shocked. Marble was a very highly regarded recruit, and most thought that he would go to one of the MI B1G schools. MSU is famous for the Flintstones. In the same year, Iowa also successfully recruited BJ Armstrong from a nice suburb of Detroit called Bloomfield Hills. He was not quite as highly coveted as Marble, who some called "baby Jordan" in HS, but it was also a little surprising that he went to Iowa. I know nothing about Roy or BJ's recruiting, but it does line up with the rumors about Ed Martin. Just tossing out that related info, not making any accusations. Too bad Raveling wasn't as good a bench coach as he was a recruiter.

When did I say Ed Martin was involved? Twice I have said I know nothing about recruiting, except that Marble and Armstrong were unexpected recruits from MI. That recruiting class might have been the best recruiting class ever, or at least in the last 40 years, at Iowa: big Ed Horton, Roy Marble Sr., BJ Armstrong, and Kevin Gamble. All four were great Iowa players, although Gamble really only played much in one year.

And I thought it was next to impossible to recruit talent to Iowa City, unlike Ames or Champaign-Urbana. I guess some posters on this board must have missed this part of Iowa history.

You should research how all of those stars got to John Wooden, he had one of the premier bag men in the game.
Would Wooden have fit the definition of a great coach without the bag man?

Ralph number 1 Raveling 2. Lute got the best recuit ever but could have been R Davis.

That was a LONG time ago, and the NIL crap has made it that much more difficult to get top recruits to come to Iowa. Fran has recruited a number of under the radar guys who became great players (Whitey, Luka, Keegan...), but you can't do better than pretty good with any regularity without getting some top recruits.

Damn, and sitting right next to Mama bear too. I've often wondered what their relationship was like. Given that Marge was a really good college player (not of CC22's level and from a different era). Still I'd think they've had some interesting converstaios.....
You do know CC is apparently still dating Connor, right? No surprise she sat next to Margaret.
