Why was Tom Davis forced out?

Iowa losing Raef Lefrentz, Nick Collison& Kirk Hienrich to Kansas J-Hawks was a big factor besides the plateau T. Davis teams had reached. Ncaa win one lose one. TD wasn't a great recruiter but he was a great teacher of the game.

Collison had little to do with it. Davis was a “dead man walking” Collison’s HS senior year, I believe. Hinrich was an “ISU all the way” (Floyd, I think) and then they changed coaches...Collison had an Iowa interest I believe, but Iowa had no BB coach...Bowlsby was trying to keep these guys in play but ethically could not reveal he had a coach ( the name) coming in...it was poor timing for Iowa to be changing basketball coaches...

Correct on Hinrich. My nephew was in his class. Never had one thought about going to Iowa.

Again some personal knowledge. Collison was headed to Iowa until Bowlsby left the coaching position unfilled. Hinrich was never going to Iowa but he might have gone to Iowa St. I think they fired a coach that year but cannot remember with certainty.

Not good news. Sorry to hear. Continue to prove them wrong DSD.
Thanks. People have tried to shoot me, I've been stabbed, once by a very unoriginal ex girlfriend with a fork in a restaurant-Seinfeld copy cat, and fought off almost every attack my enemies have thrown at me. The medical community is very wrong if they think some flu virus or pneumonia is going to kill me.

It was the wrong decision by Bowsly, a man who is hated by people at every stop he has had, especially here at Stanford. There is no doubt that the decision set the program back, and it was made out of despise over the recruiting of Joey Range. Davis was the best X’s and O’s coach at Iowa. He missed the dance 4 times in 13 seasons. And we never lost a first round game. Bowsly is a stupid man - always was and always will be. Those who know him personally, and I suspect there are people on this board who do, will attest to that.
I was a fly on the wall in the lobby of the El Paso Hilton (First Sun Bowl) and could hear every word of his conversation. He is absolutely in my Top 3 Most Arrogant People I have ever been around. It was embarrassing to just have been an unidentified eavesdropper.

Tom Davis was a popular coach with everyone outside the program and for the most part with everyone inside until the last few years. He was a good guy and that carried him along, but one of the most irritatiing things with his style was he would take the air out of the ball, there being no shot clock, and so many fans were falling asleep the concession stands were barely breaking even.

Trying not to lose was painful to watch. They lost some big leads and it got really frustrating.

As for Alford, there was a growing dislike for his hair style leading to his downfall.

As most of you know I'm a lawyer-for the last 36 years. I grew up in a political family and worked/volunteered in politics for many years. I've met every major presidential candidate and President, except Obama, since 1967 because of family politics. Met dozens of senators and too many congressmen and congressional candidates to even count. So basically my entire life has been spent around big egos and some might say I have a pretty healthy ego myself.

So, having qualified my opinion and excluding only Hillary Clinton who is on like a geohistoric level of ego mania, and John McCain, who was definitely on the narcissistic psychopathy spectrum, Bob Bowlsby and Steve Alford were by far the two most arrogant, narcissistic, condescending infected anal glans that I've ever known. I understand how Bowlsby gets jobs, he's fundamentally dishonest and mercantilist-the perfect guy to work the business end of college sports and he produces money by the boxcar load. But Alford, how could that prick even survive an interview? I'll tell you this, it was a special day when those two met, Bowlsby found a Mini Me, just as big a dick but utterly subordinate to Bowlsby. That was love at first sight for the both of them.

The shot clock was implemented before Tom Davis became Iowa's coach. Perhaps you are thinking of Lute Olson?

Dr Tom was retiring on the job his final years, his recruiting was lagging. Played and easy non conference and went 8-8 in the BIG.
This.

Plus, he had a nasty habit of trying to bounce pass into a tightly packed zone defense. It was a thing of beauty the 5% of the time it actually worked. Talk about different coaching.....Ralph Miller DESPISED the bounce pass! It was almost a benchable offense if one was attempted other than on a steal and fast break.

Super nice guy and should get a lot of credit for making all the right moves in getting Drake back on the right path toward respectability, but he had for sure reached a plateau at Iowa.

Alford was one of the hotest names when hired. The President would not let Bob B. do the buyout a year earlier. I met Steve once and he was very humble and genuine in that setting but I have heard all the stories and seen some things. His Dad was class act. I really think Alford would have done better with expereinced assitants a better offensive style and the practice facility. I loved the good Dr. and was sad to see him go but he handled it just as he handled Chris Streets death with the utmost class. Crazy that 99 was the last Sweet 16.

And after Bob Stoops got away, I suspect Bowlsby feared the tar-and-feather crowd would be after him if he let Alford get away as well.

As I recall, Alford's SMS teams were tough and smart and I thought he'd bring that to Iowa. Oh well...

I hated the Alford hiring. Never could understand why we would hire a dyed in the wool Hoosier, and always figured he was using Iowa as a stepping stone and waiting for an opening at Indiana.

Worst move for both Iowa and Alford.

It is my personal belief that is how a majority of people felt around here. It was a lose - lose situation for Iowa or at least many Iowa fans felt that way.

ResPectfully, Hinrich was never an Iowa a prospect, was he? Wasn’t Hinrich more an Iowa State whiff than an Iowa miss? Collison went to KU because Iowa didn’t have a BB coach ( the last year of TD) during his recruiting period. There was another Iowa kid who went elsewhere because UIowa had no announced BB coach then, either.
Kyle Korver from Pella went to Creighton. I don't know if he had any interest in/from Iowa before Davis 'resigned'.

The recruiting issue was distraction the AD fed the public, supported by a little truth. The President was very critical of the small number of nit wits Dr. Davis brought to campus. Joey Range was probably illiterate, possibly grade school reading and writing skills and I'm guessing no math whizz. There were questions raised as to exactly how Joey Range became eligible and remained eligible.

The University administration wildly exaggerated the risk that there was something illegal about Range (no known specific facts of which existed) or that something would be later uncovered, a negligible risk unsupported by any known fact chain. Part of this hysteria was self induced to justify a preferred result.

Bowlsby was still throwing Ray Thompson in Dr. Davis' face-who was recruited ten years before Range. Ray was not dumb but he was kind of like a wild animal and unfamiliar with the little traffic signals of a civilized society, not the least of which were not loudly farting in class and smoking reefer during the day outside of Schaeffer. Joey might have read like a 6th grader but Ray had the maturity level of a 6th grader.

It was a dirty deal, but thousands of dirty deals happen every day. This one just turned out to have catastrophic implications for Iowa basketball.
I remember asking a certain higher-up, "What happened to Ray Thompson". Answer: "Ed Horton happened to Ray Thompson"

I take it you never met John Kerry. Talk about off-the-charts ego. And Iowa's own Tom Harkin was no slouch in that regard, either.

Dr. Davis has often said that not going after Kyle harder was the worst recruiting mistake of his career.

Iowa fans would have lynched the school President had they known the extent of the shitty deal pulled on Ray Thompson. Many people do know now cuz so many years have passed. That kid was a smart ass and not very civilized but he was eligible, committed no crimes, nor was accused of crimes, and basically just run out off the campus because of his incredibly uncivilized behavior.

Would anyone be surprised if someone was known to smoke reefer with Ed, Roy and Kent Hill?

I liked with Kent Hill. Nice guy, funny sense of humor, and an absolutely horrible tennis player. But a hell of a fun guy.

Three things I remember about Kent Hill:
1. Bobby Knight having an in bounder throw the ball point blank into his nose as he was guarding the inbounds play.
2. He walked on to the football team as a tight end.
3. I played some pick up ball with him at the old field house, he showed me the scar from the thumb surgery he had after breaking it in football practice. He quit FB on the spot I believe...

OMG, yes. Very self important and condescending. As phony and insincere as a man could get. Actually debated Harkin once at a "town hall" where he couldn't get away. I did that a lot to Democrats, until they actually stopped having them around here. Harkin was a routinely arrogant politician. Neither he nor Kerry were good at anything but self promotion, well treason also.

But............one of the funniest things I ever witnessed was Bubba, Dubya and Kerry. I paid $5K to attend this small group event with Bubba and Dubya after Dubya left office, down in St. Louis. So you sit through the auditorium room but then the high $ donors got attend a private grip and grin engage in a little small talk and get your pic with the two ex POTUS.

So John Kerry comes walking into this small group room. I was in line and looking right at Bubba and Dubya and they simultaneously got brief pissed looks and then got right back into character. I just assumed they knew Kerry hadn't paid cuz politicians literally never spend their own money. Kerry was in the back of this room and he's extremely loud. Loud enough that he was basically interrupting the Presidents. As my little group moved up the line you could catch the two headliners giving Kerry the evil eye. So finally, Bubba kind of leans into Dubya and said, loud enough that Kerry might have heard it "Will that guy ever learn when to shut up." W, much more quick witted and funny when not on TV, immediately said, in a louder voice so Kerry definitely can hear it, "Senator Snore." So Bubba laughs and gives Dub a little shot to the ribs and said, also for Kerry to hear, "Senator Snore, good one George." Lots of laughs in the room.

What I later learned that same night made it even funnier. Some Democrat money guys said during the 92 Democrat primary Kerry was raising money, for Tsongas I assume, and called Bubba "Governor Hillbilly" when raising money in the posh crowd.

We were in St. Louis, Bubba was taking his Mich right out of the bottle. Kerry was drinking champagne from a flute. Guess we know why Bubba won and Kerry lost.

Yeah, he was encouraged to go out, was going to play DE, busted his thumb the very first practice. Played tennis in PE class with that cast most of that semester.

Yeah, pols are even worse than celebs when it comes to freebies and entitlements at those events. And celebs are AWFUL.

I actually thought Jeb Bush would be the "star" in that family, even after he lost to Chiles in his first crack at FL Gov. He was a great Gov. Somehow, he was a woeful POTUS candidate. Never would have guessed Trump could completely own him in debates, but he did.

Actually you made my point, thank you. In no way should Chris Street, Jess Settles, Russ Millard, Ryan Bowen, JR Koch, Kent McCausland, joey Range play with the others mentioned. Their skills are completely different than the others

This part of your post makes no sense to me. I’ll set Koch and MacCausland to the side since Koch started as a walk-on and Mac was a 1-skill guy. I’ll even grant you Range and Millard.

I’m not even sure which way you’re trying to argue. I think you’re telling me that Street, Settles and Bowen have no business playing with the others?? If I’m reading it backwards, you’re telling me Murray, Woolridge, Oliver and Kingsbury don’t belong playing with the other group?

Your groups make no sense. An “in their prime” lineup of Woolridge, Kingsbury, Settles/Murray, Street, Rucker would have been pretty salty.

One of the ironies that the Democrat propaganda wing attacked constantly was Dubya was dumb, although he graduated from Yale and got an MBA at one of three best business schools on the planet. W had higher SATs than Gore or Kerry and tested higher on the GMAT than either Gore or Kerry on the LSATs.

After 2016 the reason W won and Jeb lost, badly, was pretty obvious. Jeb is a dud. A really boring guy when he's around. W lights up the room. He was just really stiff on TV.

Thompson committed no crimes?

Did he plead guilty to public intox, interference with official acts and assault just for fun?

Ray was a problem the moment he got to IC. It was only a matter of time before he was sent packing.
