I think the article is poorly written trash. However Iowa State would be right to worry - the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Pac 12 will be the last conferences standing - the Big XII will be ripped apart once their grant of rights expires in a few years and what's left won't be considered Power 5.
I do believe that there may be a point where we may see certain schools that underperform or aren't well invested in the revenue sports, or don't pull their weight in revenue, such as Purdue, Northwestern, maybe even Rutgers in a post cable revenue model world - that are cast aside. We're at least a generation away from that type of move in particular - that's something of potential only in a world where the arhletes are paid and the media revenue game changes to where these athletics departments are more like professional franchises.
The University of Iowa will be fine in the interim - we dominate the state and our presence leaks into the surrounding states (and media markets) to a degree that makes us a bigger fish than we appear to be at first glance. We're a top 20 program. However, look at Illinois - a generation can change everything and make us dispensable.
