Would people that want fran to go

Be satisfied if he axed a couple assistants and brought in a recruiting and defensive specialists? Or do you want everyone gone. I feel something needs to change or it will be the same ole same ole.

I think a shake up of the staff and willingness to bring in a grad transfer or two to help out(pending if there open schollys or not).

I think most people respect and are appreciative of the rebuilding job Fran has done. But now it’s time to take that next step and our current regime is not getting it done. Look Michigan shook up their staff a few years ago and looked what happened. They have had a nice little run.

I think some changes need to be made. If Fran chooses not to, then it’s his grave he is slowly digging.

As much as I can't stand him and his sons, I've been one who has said he deserves the 2019-2020 season. First, he did turn us around and get us (I think) back into the NCAA tourney - and I don't see how Iowa has enough of a basketball reputation to fire a coach that gets us into the NCAA, although in time we could have a "next level" issue like Dr Tom. Second, I really think Toussaint will be an important piece of the puzzle. Third, I do agree he needs to shake up the staff a bit... so yes, OP, I would be ok with giving him a chance to make the staff shake up and see how it goes.

Fran calling the refs "Cheaters" ended his reign. His temper has gotten the best of him. Bob Knight did nearly the same thing but BK won titles (national and conference). Fran has no more bridges to cross. He has burned them down. The longer he stays, the longer Iowa stays in this rut.

New assistants would have to be aware that Fran is on a road to nowhere.

Never happen. Fran and Alford are brothers separated at birth. Both have inflated views of their talents and feel like they are doing whoever they are coaching for a huge favor. Only a complete head in the sand egomaniac would make the roster decisions Fran has. Fran really thinks is coaching and system are going to mask all the gaps.

People hammer on Cook for dribbling so much but do you think Cook is doing that on his own? Highly unlikely. Fran is the positionless basketball coach remember? Hell every recruit can play the 1-4, has handles, can defend and shoot the ball--just ask Fran. What happens to these players when the regular starts is an Area 51 type of mystery.

I’ll give him one more year, but I think some changes need to happen. If you return this same roster (lose Baer and bring in JT/PM) I think you will see the same issues we saw this year.

If anyone transfers do not bank the scholly, get a grad transfer in here and have immediate help.

I'm good with changing up some things on the assistant coaching staff.

It paid dividends for my Tampa Bay Lightning and their penalty kill - They were towards the bottom of the league last year in penalty kill %. So they fired their special teams coach, and now this year their PK is #1 in the NHL.

So just maybe this could help the defense, too, if some changes are made.

Fran had a scholarship he banked for this season. Instead of getting a transfer in at 1 or 2 he went with Connor and Moss. You can fill in the rest of the blanks.

I think that would help. I don't know that he will change though. He seems pretty stubborn.

It really is sad that he has had the same assistants for 10 years. If you have good assistants you have other programs offering them jobs. Even going from the #3 assistant to #1 assistant is a big jump. Like KF, Fran needs to bring in at least young and hungry coach who wants to move up.

Fran isn't looking at this like we are. He isn't sitting up at night thinking "What is best for the program?" He is in charge that is what he is thinking about and these are his guys. He made that statement last year I think about "no changes to my staff" and am sure he will make it again this year unless one of those guys retires. Fran is the coach and they are bobble heads. I don't see a different assistant having much if any impact since Fran is Caesar. His ego could never tolerate improvements being attributed to someone else.

I want a complete fresh start. I don’t think changing assistants will right the ship. Fran’s been leading this charge for 9 years. Iowa basketball is what it is under Fran... We will continue to be ‘average’ whether we keep him for one more year or 10 more years. It’s time for a change. We’ve seen this movie one too many times ... hoping and believing the ending will change.... No more ‘wait ‘til next year.’ It’s time for a new direction.

Fran has won just shy of 49% of his Big 10 conference games in 9 years. We are what our record says we are... average ...

Buying new chairs for the Titanic isn’t going to do anything at this point.

He didn’t go with Jordan Bohannon?

What transfer did Fran turn away in order to bank the scholarship?

I am not sure let me ask the people who want Fran to go and i will get back to you

Fran needs to, and would have already been gone at most P-5 programs by now. Bringing in new assistants next year would at least show that he and Barta care at least a little bit about trying to win games. IF ABSOLUTELY NOTHING CHANGES for the next season, then that is unequivocal proof that our A.D. and Head Basketball Coach are just major a-holes, giving the entire fan base the finger and laughing on their way to the bank. Just about all fan bases have to deal with crappy teams and even crappy multi-year stretches, but NO ONE deserves that. I guess the people to blame for enabling that kind of toxic culture are the big-time boosters......

Has anyone ever seen Sherman talk, or yell out to players, or coach, while sitting on the bench during a game?

Frans evaluation of the 10-10 record in the BIG as tremendous tells me nothing in the approach will change . There will be no sense of urgency . I don’t know if changing an assistant would help or hurt. They seem to all be the “father figure” type. Maybe diversify in age and get a younger guy looking to move up.
I’d prefer the recruiting approach widen up a bit. Like every program there are misses and players leave, by it would be nice to plug in an opening with a juco or transfer. Somebody that might be 21 or 22 years old and ready to step in a fill a role instead of the 18 year old skinny kid who is years away from seriously contributing to a good team.

You know things are going wel

None that is the issue. He made no effort. I recall some typical Fran comment that he was going to look to see who might be out there that could help the team and a week or two later he said he was banking the scholarship.

When they leave the gym they have nothing in common. Fran is a citizen. Alford hides behind Jesus while refusing to pay dinner tabs, vendors, brow beats rape victims, and throws his players under the bus unless he’s covering up their crimes while hiding behind Jesus. .

However, their arrogance/level of self-regard when it comes to basketball is eerily similar.

After the second suspension, I’ve seen enough from a man that wants to blame the officials while losing by 20 when he can’t, and hasn’t recognized his defense is the elephant in the room for most of his tenure at Iowa.

Agreed! How many coaches in the big ten have been suspended multiple times?

Dillard and Speraw should “retire.” Bring in two, hungry, relentless recruiters who want to eventually become head coaches.

At the beginning of the season if you would have said we finish 10-10 in conference and 21-10 overall I could have lived with that after last year and I think most fans would have also.

The problem is HOW it happens. There are multiple examples of why this was a bad year. We were sitting at 8-6 in conference and looking at the schedule we had a real shot to finish 5-1 and maybe be the 4 seed in the BTT. Instead we rely on two desperation shots to end up 10-10. What if we don't make either of those that would have been a 6 game losing streak. The way we lost the last 4 games is just terrible coaching. We get blown out in 3 of those 4 games and the other one we blow a 16 point lead to a team that was down to 7 scholly players and their best available was fouled out late game.

Another example is how we lose games, we are losing games the same way every year. Our defense is terrible, and yes we improved over last year but it was still terrible overall besides a game here or there. Late game situations we collapse and fail to execute. Our guys make the same type of mistakes every game. Cook wants to be a point forward and attack the rim, that's great and all but he loses the dribble or just plain loses it majority of the time. That is on a coach to tell that player hey you can't do that man, you need to give it up to a guard and let him distribute the ball. We take terrible shots and the worst time in games. I don't know how many games this year where we have a chance to gain separation against teams and we come down 3-4 straight possessions and get nothing cause Garza jacks up a 3, JBO jacks up a 3 or Cook loses the handle. Most teams take bad shots or have bad possessions but good coaches then coach and tell the team to take a breath, and get a good shot.

Fran knows Offense and sets, I will give him that, but we lack in so many other areas, we got killed on the boards towards the end of the year, our defensive philosophy is just mid blowing, and we lack discipline and mental toughness. Then you couple all of these things with his outbursts and temper tantrums and it just makes for a toxic situation with our fan base.

sounds like a good idea. Frank's been told to cool the sideline outbursts of looks like.

Fran thinks he's got it all figured out. He knows his benching any player as soon as he picks up his second foul in the first half is the right thing; as is believing he has the best assistant coach staff he can have-- considering he has had the same identical three assistants since the day he arrived 9 years ago.

But yet, Fran is 0-for-22 in ever making even a Sweet 16 during his coaching career and has won just 3 NCAA tourney games during those 22 years. Pretty sure this season will end in him being 0-for-23.

Are you counting not making the tournament as not advancing to the Sweet 16?

His best shot was when he was at Siena and upset Ohio State. The other year would of been when we played in Dayton. I believe Tenn made it to the sweet 16 that year cause Duke got upset in the first round.

Pretty simple in what I am saying:

Fran has made the Sweet 16 ZERO times in 22 previous seasons as a Head Coach. This year likely makes it 23.

In case you're wondering, in those previous 22 years, Fran's teams have made the NCAA tourney 8 times and has won 4 games (I said 3 before) in those times as he's 4-8 in NCAA tourney play.

Basically he's made the NCAA tourney 1 year in every 3 as a coach. To put in perspective, while Tom Davis was at Iowa, he had Iowa in the NCAA tourney 69% of the time (9 of 13 years).

Y’all should be posting your concrete list of “goals” first. Too many of you are going about this backwards.

Is your goal for Iowa to overtake MSU on a yearly basis? To become Wisconsin under Bo? To simply start fresh to engage your erection?

Fran is going to be fired by Iowa. Not this year, and it maybe several years, but he will be fired, probably from blowing a gasket. But he is already a dead coach walking, just a matter of time.

I've been one of those who said we should keep Fran and see how things go. I have also said let's wait until this season ends and decide what to do regarding Fran. In other words, I have been patient about replacing Fran. I dropped the wife off at the store today, and while she was in there I looked up Iowa basketball on my phone. I picked out an article on SB Nation and read it and it talked a lot about how the players, fans, and coaches must be feeling, since this has happened way too often. The writer, in closing, said that there are a handful of people who are paid well to come up with the answers to the problems, especially at season's end, and I agree with that. I am not calling for Fran's dismissal. However I am supportive of changes to the assistant(s) we currently have. I know it's been a stretch and not a good stretch, and I'm not looking for any movement by Fran in the near future a la Gary Barta. By replacing a member or two of his staff, and hopefully bringing in someone who can focus on what ails our team, then we may be able to narrow down where the problems lie. Replacing the entire coaching staff IMO would not be a good move.
