WWE Raw

What a weekend, the Punk debut on Rampage was the first time I felt AEW was viable/legit, never really got Punk, but his hometown fans did...well done to AEW.

Vince dialed up defcon 5 and brought back Becky to squash Bianca...and then brings back hipster Brock, who still destroyed Cena after the match.

Really missed seeing Sasha/Bianca part 2, likely would of been match of the night, not sure what Vince has in his bag to counteract Brian Danielson's AEW debut...or Adam Cole....Ric Flair.........eh he is boring and needs to fade away, Tully and Arn legit dont like him.

My concern with Flair is his ego will distract Charlotte, dad and boyfriend are AEW....she has and will make millions in the WWE...AEW has work to do with Women's Wrestling....Britt is a start, but I can see Flair f'n up Charlotte's career, because he needs another run, history has proven he's not a really good dad, or person.

SummerSlam exposed the WWE's weak storylines. Had to hot shot some returns and ruin momentum for their next big act Bianca. With Becky on Smackdown though. What's the point of RAW.
Brock and Reigns should at least be interesting with the new dynamic.
AEW makes mistakes but at least there seems to be a plan.

Agree with most of this, but what is AEW's plan? They seem to be more ADHD than Vince most weeks. Vince has a plan, it's bland but their is a formula there.

Who/what is AEW building too?

I think Bianca will be back, not sure what happened with Sasha, but Bruce has always preached that if you have someone who can't appear, you replace them with someone bigger if possible, I think that is all last night was, the squash was because they didn't have time to put a match/storyline together, so they just popped the crowd.

Every guy has feuds. They rotate the talent out. So we don't have to see the Mysterios face The Usos 25 times in a month.
They could have gotten around the Squash. By having Vega, Camilla, and someone else jump her before the bell. Becky get the save and turn it into a handicap tag match. Crowd would still go nuts for Becky. Bianca gets protected. And it can set up a match between the two.

I wish they would rotate the Bucks off tv for about a year. Them and the fact everyone is in a faction with HOF type manager are my main beefs with AEW, but mostly the Bucks, I personally just don't like them.

WWE couldn't of handled the Becky Return worse. The one thing even they couldn't screw up, they screwed up. Does Brock's return signal that the Rock won't be back at Survivor Series to build to a match with Roman at Mania? Surely they don't waste Brock/Roman at Extreme Rules or Saudimania. I'd bet we are getting a Lashley/Goldberg rematch in the desert, not sure how or why the kid is involved.

Goldberg is hot garbage. Best u can do is keep it short and hope nobody gets hurt. Berg needs someone that is smaller and can carry him. Lashley should be worried about Berg not only damaging his character but health as well.
Anything Reigns does will be fine. The character is unbelievably relevant now. It reminds me of Austin in his prime. A bad night for him is a triple. Building the undercard is far more important so the fresh meat that comes Roman's way gets over and means something afterwards.

I am with you on the Bucks. I don’t like their matches, promos, style etc. I just fast forward anytime they are on TV.

Sounds like Goldberg only has two matches left on his contract, but agree, if I'm Lashley, I'm not letting him suplex me or take me off my feet in any manner after he almost crippled Taker. He really does struggle with bigger guys as his power isn't what it used to be. He is best used when can come in and have a 2 minute squash and get out of the ring.

For me they have xpac go away heat, hopeful as they sign legit talent their role would be reduced, but no such luck. Maybe Tony can get them on that gameshow Cody does and misses months of TV for.

I was thinking the same thing regarding Xpac heat or Mongo McMichael.

Yeah, I'm not a Bucks guy either, and I really like AEW. Their characters never made much sense to me, although they were palatable when they were aligned with Hangman and they had comedic light friction with him and his drinking.

I get the premise that their current matches are purposely designed to create heat, but the thing is that they're really only exaggerated versions of their standard matches, which really are just a series of spots with no internal logic. Even their face matches have some of the same weaknesses.

I very occasionally listen to some Jim Cornette, who hates AEW. I don't agree with him on a lot philosophically about how he feels about AEW, but the one thing he's absolutely genius about is knowing how in-ring match booking/psychology should work. And his criticisms of Bucks matches being trash, going back before that became their heel gimmick, is pretty spot on.

I also think that this is the worst job AEW has done yet of building to a PPV. I trust that they'll put on a good show for the PPV, but considering that they only have a handful a year, this is extremely lackluster. It's like "An episode of Dynamite, but pay for it."

Announced so far:

AEW World Title Match
Impact World Champion Christian Cage vs. Kenny Omega (c)

Steel Cage Match for the AEW World Tag Team Titles
Tag Team Eliminator Winners vs. The Young Bucks (c)

Women’s Casino Battle Royale
Nyla Rose vs. 20 more competitors TBA
Winner earns a future shot at the AEW Women’s World Title.

CM Punk vs. Darby Allin

PAC vs. Andrade El Idolo

Paul Wight vs. QT Marshall

Not a bad start, I am sure there will be a few more matches signed between now and then...

and Cornette needs to remember some of the crap he's done: scaffold matches, booking a 3,500 year old mummy, and wrestling a full on rubber masked Ninja Turtle...

That is very lackluster. The main event is what, a 10-day build? You have months to lead to a PPV, and that's what you've got for a main event?

I'm sure the show will deliver in the ring, but I see NOTHING so far, other than the return of CM Punk, that's must buy or looks anything different from a Dynamite or Rampage. It's not like they have to do one of these things once a month so sometimes just have to deal with it.

They've had months. You should be blowing off fueds or wrapping up a program that's peaking.

Their world titlist has an opponent that wasn't on his radar two weeks ago. The tag team champions don't even have an opponent, and if it's not Jurassic Express, then it will be totally out of left field. Personally, I think it has to be Jurassic Express as it would at least resemble the climax of a program.

Andrade vs PAC has no heat. QT Marshall vs Paul Wight is garbage.

Look at some of the biggest stars in the promotion...MJF and Jericho blew off a months-long fued on Dynamite. I can't figure that out at all, you've got two of the biggest guys in AEW with basically nothing going a couple weeks before the PPV.

Britt Baker is arguably as over as any performer in AEW right now, looks like they're quickly assembling a match against Statlander out of nowhere, but that's barely a program.

Moxley's fueding with jobbers two weeks out.

Miro has nothing going on but a squash tour. I like the way they're booking him right now as a monster, but you'd think they'd have SOMEONE built up for him to crush at the PPV.

The Dark Order, who is also super over, is pretty much cleared off the decks going into the PPV. Archer is dicking around with a civilian.

I'm assuming that some variation of Cage vs Starks will happen, and that's the single program that has been booked and paced to the PPV climax. I guess Cody will come back against Malachi Black? That's sort of a thing I guess, but Cody did just get squashed.

I'm not trying to be overly critical, because I really like AEW, and they've delivered enough great stuff. But this just isn't up to their standards of building up to a "must-see, wonder what will happen" show. Something got messed up with the Page-Omega build, which might be beyond their control if it's a personal leave for Page, I'm assuming they didn't voluntarily swerve off that.

And they've absolutely got six more hours of TV to build it and improve on it, so maybe I'll be singing a different tune by next weekend.

Holy crap have our expectations of AEW changed in just three years...the first in ring appearance of CM PUNK in 7 years is now lackluster? The guy that got over a million viewers on a Friday night at 10pm EDT to watch him say "Hello"?

They sold out the building in minutes- WITH NO ANNOUNCED CARD.

I guess I see it as a good thing for the company that Moxley, Jericho, MJF, Page, Cody, Orange Cassidy, Miro, Brit Baker AREN'T announced for a PPV yet and it's still going to be worth the $50 bucks to watch it...

I agree with you that the build to this PPV has been...off? compared to their other ones, but you play the hand you are dealt...Omega/Page had to be scrapped due to Hangman's family situation and Moxley/Tanahashi got scrapped due to Tanahashi being added to the NJPW card the night before in Japan...

And like you said, they have 6 hours of TV and 456 hours of Youtube between now and the PPV for things to change..

Well, my expectations have always been pretty high, because they've always done a good job. I am not saying CM Punk's return is lackluster, but it's not like they did any booking into it, they signed him and put him in a match (and a good choice). I'm more talking about the booking.

I agree that I have to give them a pass on the Omega/Christian thing, as they had to accommodate the Page time off. Was not aware of the Moxley plans.

Hoping they can really work some of these other angles hard between now and the PPV. The fact that so many of those stars don't have announced matches is only a problem because it implies they're not in clear angles to blow off. Maybe they can come up with some good twists the next couple shows.

I would personally think hard about adding someone really over to the main event and making it a three way. If Page doesn't come back in a surprise, I would seriously think about adding Jungle Boy to a three way match there (after the Elite cause JE to lose the tournament). I think that would add a lot of intrigue, JB is SUPER over, would create some very interesting dynamics with Christian and JB (and lead to a Christian vs JB program which would be a great next step for JB). And would add a little bit of doubt that Omega might lose (he won't) because it wouldn't require him to be pinned, and you'd essentially have two people that could work together against him.

I'm also guessing that we'll move toward a MJF vs Sammy match? That could be an amazing match, and would fit the continuation of that program. To be honest Jericho could use some time off LOL.

And it looks like Orange Cassidy and Matt Hardy are going tonight, I could see that continuing to the PPV with some kind of stipulation, and I don't hate that idea at all.

Darby
Orange
Schivanoe (sp)

Penta

Reminded me a bit of when ECW visited The Rave. Not as insane as those crowds. But the energy in the building is intimate. WWE is more for families AEW is for the hardcore wrestling fan.

One other thing Black is an amazing worker to see live. Thought maybe some of the camera angles helped his offense. But just as fluid in person as on TV. Going to be tough to get him booed in front of an AEW crowd.

If I am Tony Khan, Adam Cole is who I build around. I'd build to have him defeat Omega. Punk will bring attention and so will Bryan, but Cole is a long term play that I would regularly start tuning into AEW for as long as they keep him away from playing grab-ass with Omega and the Bucks, unless he's beating their asses. Sounded like Vince wanted to keep him, guess not.

Vince wanted him but didn't want to do a short term deal. At least that's the rumor.

With that ghastly new logo, can't imagine this will be anything other than an unmitigated disaster. I wonder if HHH and HBK are involved at all? Can't wait to see Ciampa's new race car driver gimmick, or Walter's new Cowboy gimmick.

Makes sense, I doubt Vince would want to bring him to the main roster and get him more exposure, then to have to renegotiate in a year or so and risk him being a bigger defection. A short contract would likely limit any sort of potential push he may of gotten.

Again if he ends up in AEW it could be awesome, but most likely he will get tossed into the middle of the Elite circle jerk.

Well from Cole's perspective do u want to get the Dolph Ziggler or Cesaro treatment. And have your character diminished.

I get your point, but not sure I'd use either of them as a poster boy for Vince's Mismanagement, specifically Ziggler who has held the world title twice and virtually every other belt multiple times.

He's had a good run and is still a solid supporting character pulling in a $1million plus/year. 96% of the guys in the industry would give a body part to have a career like his, which is pretty spectacular when you consider the gimmick he debuted on Raw with.
