Hawkeyes to Face Utah in Sioux Falls in 2024-25

IOWA CITY, Iowa —
The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will return to the Mount Rushmore State for a fourth time for a nonconference game against Utah on Dec. 21, 2024. The Hawkeyes and Utes will meet at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Tickets will go on sale Feb. 29 at the Sanford Pentagon Box Office and ticketmaster.com. Television coverage will determine the start time.

“We are looking forward to returning to Sioux Falls and facing an excellent Utah program,” said Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery. “The community and Sanford Pentagon staff always provide a first-class experience for our fans and student-athletes. We’re excited to play in a great venue and to give our fans on the western half of the state an opportunity to see our team play.”

It will be Iowa’s first game in Sioux Falls since the 2021-22 season. Iowa is 2-1 on Heritage Court, beating Colorado (80-73) in 2017, falling to No. 1 Gonzaga (99-88) in 2020 and downing Utah State (94-75) in 2021.

Utah will be making its Sanford Pentagon debut.

“Iowa is one of -- if not the biggest -- draw at the Sanford Pentagon. Their fan base brings an incredible amount of energy to Heritage Court every time the Hawkeyes play here, and the Utes have a rich history of basketball excellence and are now led by a coach who knows South Dakota well.” said Jesse Smith, vice president of operations for Sanford Sports. “Thank you to head coach Fran McCaffrey and head coach Craig Smith for bringing their teams to Sioux Falls for what will be another premier college basketball event.”

Tickets go on sale in 11 days (2/29) and given the limited seating capacity at the Pentagon (around 3300), they'll sell FAST.

Last night, Feb 26, Jack McCaffery made it clear he won't be attending Iowa

Good for him. As you will see/read, he's very mature & has thought it through. I hope he kicks ass wherever he ends up.

The story from the Cedar Rapids Gazette:

Jack McCaffery’s future does not include Iowa

Iowa City West forward is considered the top junior in the state, but he does not want to play college ball for his dad at the University of Iowa

IOWA CITY — Jack McCaffery was asked Friday night after his Iowa City West team had won its Class 4A substate semifinal game if he still wasn’t planning on playing college basketball for the University of Iowa.

“Oh, no, no, no,” he said.

The 6-foot-8 forward is widely considered the top player in the state in the junior class, a top 100 recruit nationally. He’s the youngest son of Hawkeyes men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery.

But he created a bit of a stir around these parts last summer when he told a recruiting reporter he didn’t want to stay in Iowa City for college and play for his dad. He didn’t want to follow his brothers Connor and Patrick to Iowa.

He was asked Friday night why he felt that way.

“It was really hard for my brothers, and it was really hard for my mom (Margaret),” Jack said. “The fans, they were especially tough on Connor, because a lot of people don’t understand how he affects a basketball game. So that was part of it. He’s a coach on the floor, the all-time wins leader. I don’t know ...

“I saw that, and I didn’t like that. I just wanted to try something different.”

So instead of dealing with negative keyboard warriors and such, he will — as Fleetwood Mac sang — go his own way.

“Blaze my own path, do something different than my brothers did,” Jack said. “I just wanted to see what it’s like. I really like the (recruiting) process that’s happening right now, the coaches that are recruiting me. I think it’s the right decision for me. I think doing something different will really help me.”

McCaffery goes into West’s substate final game Tuesday night against Bettendorf at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse averaging 15.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 blocked shots per game. All those numbers lead the Trojans.

He has a long body that has added weight and strength the past year, has a nice fadeaway jump shot. He feels he’s definitely a better player who still has room to grow physically and in his game.

“I’m up to 218 (pounds), so the weight is a big difference,” McCaffery said. “Last season, teams were just way too physical (for me), and I couldn’t do anything. So I feel definitely like that’s the biggest thing. I feel like I’m jumping better, a lot better. I’ve really worked on my athleticism. I got a summer of lifting (weights) three times a week, and during the season I’ve been lifting two times a week.

“I feel that’s been a big help for my game. Then it’s really working on my ball-handling. I feel like I can create my shot a lot better than a year ago. So I just feel like all those things put together are going to help me be a lot better player.”

So what schools have piqued McCaffery’s interests the most to this point? He mentioned Butler, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.

A decision will not be coming soon. He’ll let things play out this spring and summer, likely take some official visits in the fall.

“I really love Butler. I’ve visited it twice,” he said. “I was there last Saturday, and Hinkel (Fieldhouse) was rocking. I love Coach (Thad) Matta, he’s one of my favorite people. (Assistant) Coach (Alex) Barlow and Coach (Maurice) Joseph have really been recruiting me well. Coach (Jon) Diebler. So I feel like that’s a good place right now.

“Ohio State was on me hard until that whole thing (Coach Chris Holtmann was fired) just happened. I really like Wake Forest. Coach (Steve) Forbes was here, then his assistant came, so that was good. Those are probably the main three.”

Seventh-ranked West (18-3) shoots for its first state tournament trip since 2020 on Tuesday night when it plays Bettendorf (16-6). Bettendorf’s Caden Wilkins is one of the top seniors in the state.

Thank goodness the pain is over

Might go down as one of the most frustrating seasons I can remember in a long while and there’s been plenty of them. Not a very exciting team and have very few talented players and the athleticism is much to be desired . Time to clean house and start over as Fran has worn his time out here… I am not sure why people think Iowa is going to be that much different next season? I just don’t see it… very frustrating season that’s for sure.

Have you or a family member/friend ever felt sick for weeks and couldn't get a diagnosis?

What happened?

My buddy lives in a small town in Pennsylvania and has felt sick for weeks. He's been to the doctor a bunch and they can't find a reason.

I doubt the doctors in his small town are world class but I can't know for sure. I thought it could be Lyme disease since he lives in a wooded area.

He's financially well off and I recommend he rent a hotel room in New York City and check into a world class hospital.

Has this ever happened to you or someone you know? What happened?

D1Baseball.com Weekly Chat - Week #6 (3/25)

Posting any Big Ten or nationally relevant topics

Erik: Has anybody tried unplugging Indiana and plugging them back in? It's a rough go in Bloomington right now.

Kendall Rogers: Erick -- It has been mind blowing to see what Indiana was the first couple of weeks, particularly at Coastal Carolina, and what the Hoosiers are right now. Outside of a couple of one offs, their pitching staff has been atrocious. I think it was Joe or Rooms who said it earlier this year, but they at the time were curious to see how IU would respond from losing Luke Sinnard for the year. Obviously not very well. With an RPI in the triple digits, it's must-win time (already) for the Hoosiers.

-------------------------------------------------

Hog Fan: At this stage of the season, what team do you think is most likely to end up as the #1 overall seed? Considering the remaining schedules, I would think it's possibly Oregon State, followed by Clemson, and then whoever emerges as SEC regular season champion.

Aaron Fitt: I still think it's Arkansas. Even though you're absolutely right that the SEC is so rugged that nobody runs the table, I just think Arkansas' pitching is so elite that they will be able to handle that meat-grinder better than most. I seem them winning that league, maybe even comfortably, and winding up as the No. 1 national seed. But Oregon State and Clemson do feel like the next two likeliest. The Beavers are going to run roughshod through the Pac-12, but the Pac is so down this year that that won't carry as much weight as winning the SEC, even with a lesser conference record. And I think we'll see a lot of teams going back and forth in the ACC all year long; I do really like Clemson, but I don't see them running away with that league. Too many good teams.

-------------------------------------------------

Ben: Hello gentlemen! I assume it's not something y'all track, but 12 of your top 25 teams losing weekend series has to be close to a record! Is this a sign of things to come in June? A not top heavy, topsy-turvy, wide open tournament? Thanks!

Aaron Fitt: Yeah that's a lot of carnage! And I do think it's indicative of the state of college baseball this year -- a lot of parity, a lot of good but flawed teams, very few truly elite teams. It's just so hard to pitch in college baseball in this current environment, that teams that have truly elite pitching like Wake Forest and LSU had last year, and like Arkansas has this year, really stand out. But does anybody except Arkansas have elite pitching this year?

-------------------------------------------------

Rob S: Where did Nebraska fall this time around for you? And what do you think of their odds in the Big Ten or as an at-large this season?

Aaron Fitt: Once again, Nebraska was just right on the cusp of the Top 25, we talked about them at length. It's just a matter of other teams had louder weekends against better competition, so they jumped over the Huskers. But that team has been very consistent against a solid schedule, we are all impressed with the body of work. And given where they are currently in the top 10 of the RPI, it definitely feels like they're starting from a position of strength when it comes to earning an at-large bid. I like their chances.

-------------------------------------------------

Guest: What is your latest take on the Iowa Hawkeyes, and B1G in general?

Kendall Rogers: Guest -- was good to see the Hawkeyes shake off Brecht's first loss and come back and win the series, but they've got to get a lot better across the board to potentially make a run at the tournament. Right now, the postseason contenders for me are Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers with Iowa the other team. Illinois picked up a nice series win over Indiana this past weekend, but its RPI is well into the triple digits.

Former speaker Kevin McCarthy will retire from Congress at end of year

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the former House speaker who was ousted from his position in October in a revolt by hard-right members, will not seek reelection to his congressional seat and retire from Congress at the end of this month, he announced Wednesday.

Keeping up with politics is easy with The 5-Minute Fix Newsletter, in your inbox weekdays.

“I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways,” McCarthy said in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. “I know my work is only getting started.”

McCarthy’s retirement will bring to an end a 16-year House career that saw him quickly rise through the ranks of Republican leadership, culminating with his stint as speaker. His ouster marked the first time in history that the House voted to remove its leader, a move that threw the chamber into a period of instability.
