(10) Iowa vs (7) Cincinnati

You're right Columbus natives will not attend the game, but you better believe there will be plenty of UC fans making the 2 hour trip North for this game. UC will have well over 10,000 fans at this game. By the way, if you ever move back to "Cincinnatti" it's spelled Cincinnati.

I did misspell Cincinnati. Sorry about that. Give me a break, I didn't get home until after midnight from a Bob Seger concert last night .

I have only seen Cincy play a few times, and they play hard-nosed defense. Cumberland is a tough match up (physical, skilled, maybe 6-5), and is their go-to player. He can score a lot of ways and can get on a roll. This would be a great game for Moss to be ready to play. Not the match up I would have hoped for, but if we play with some intensity and rebound, we can win this game.

The difference in athletic ability is stark.

Iowa's path to a win would seem to need to come through shooting well from the perimeter.

Anything can happen in one game in the tourney. Certainly possible we see a better version of Iowa and they get the upset.

Cincy has played, and yes, won, a lot of close games this season against some pretty mediocre opponents. If our shooters have an "on" night and get us off to a good start, we could easily win this game.

Yep, those tremendous athletes barely beat UCONN twice, barely beat SMU twice, barely beat Memphis twice and split with UCF. They certainly aren't any better athletes than what Iowa has seen in the Big Ten. They appear to rely heavily on one scorer and they don't have substantial front court depth. If Iowa is on then I don't see this as an upset. This just depends on which version of Iowa shows up. I think they're going to play with a great sense of urgency.

The additional benefit is that their best scorer is a wing. Our best defenders are wings. I think Joe and Baer will hold their own against Cumberland.

Agreed, Tennessee is a tough team but they are beatable. They lost to Auburn both times this season, barely beat a bad Vanderbilt and mediocre Alabama.

I can't believe all the whining on this forum since yesterday. Everyone was worried about getting an 8-9 across from Duke and now they are whining about getting a Cincy team that barely beat UCONN twice and getting Tennessee. Of the top 8 teams Iowa could have been matched up with in the second round, Tennessee would probably be my choice to play.

Yes when you get past the absolute top teams everyone is beatable. I'm sure Cincinnati is looking at this game as a real good opportunity as well. I have zero confidence that Iowa is going to play well, given that Iowa hasn't played well against anyone with a pulse going on 3+ weeks now.

It's a brand new game when we get to play against teams that haven't been scouting us all season....

It's not as if Iowa has no chance.

It would be a big help to the Hawks if both teams reset to a time earlier in the year. One where the Hawks took care of mich easily. And when cincy hadn't just gone on a roll and buzz sawed through a good houston team in their conference championship game.

If you put any stock at all in momentum, it's not in Iowa's favor. Again, it's not that they have no chance. Upsets happen. It's the best thing about the tourney.

15 fouls with Connor, Dailey and Moss--use them on Cumberland and make the guy grind and take a pounding. Likely commit 3 fouls to every 1 that gets called with the officiating we have seen. Cincy will play MSU ball and Iowa can't come out passive or they will get behind by 20 before the 10 minute mark. Hell put Riley Till in there for spurts and have him get some riding points. Frustrate the guy enough to pick up an offensive foul or two. Puts Iowa in a tough spot because they aren't athletic enough to play man but the zone has been picked apart recently.

Did he give the crowd his shakedown of the NCAA Tourney?
He led off with shakedown . It was at the BB&T Center in a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale with about 15,000 in attendance. Great concert with 3 encores. He had 14 musicians with him on the stage. One of the better concerts I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot thru the years.

There was a study some years back on the concept of momentum and success in the tournament. It found that seeding was a much better determinant of success than momentum. For example, a 10 seed that got in by going on a winning streak was not more likely than a 10 seed that lost 4 of 6 to end the year to win games in the NCAA tournament.

For whatever reason, Iowa lost its mojo. We'll see if they can get it back.

That's interesting.

I wonder how much the human factor of committee members influenced the seeding. They can say all they want about, "we look at every game equally" but I am skeptical that a team going on a slide at the end of the year isn't going to be affected more as to seeding than the one with comparable losses scattered throughout the year.

Who gets beat in front of you helps a lot.

Loyola last year beat a #7 seed and a #9 seed in their sweet 16 / elite 8 games.

That’s some sweet action.

when I was a kid I attended the Iowa-Cincinnati FB game at Kinnick. I remember the Iowa PA Announcer continually saying "cincinnat-uh" and it drove me nuts. At least we won big.

The Hawkeyes definitely have a chance to beat Cincy.
Bohannon and Wieskamp need to be hitting from
three point land and Cook and Garza need to score
in the front court. Iowa will bring a renewed energy
for this NCAA game. Hawks win by 8 points.
I like this
Always have a chance!!!

Why not...they're just up the road from Lew-uh-ville ;)

Maybe someone asked this, and my apologies if they did....who on earth do we have that is going to guard Jarron Cumberland? It is definitely not going to be JBo. I see a LOT of zone being played in this game, with maybe Moss up top? We might also see a lot of Dailey with his length as well.

Yikes.....

Wieskamp, Moss, Dailey might all get a chance. I'm not sure how effective zone would be considering they have several good 3 point shooters, including Cumberland. We might have to test out a few looks to find something that works. But the biggest key will be crashing the defensive boards. They get a lot of second-chance points.

If hawks play like they did either game against illini and Michigan the first time around they win. If they are struggling from out side I don't like our chances. Jbo needs to be more assertive, even chuck some up from way out. Hope JW and Moss are on too.
