*****Wisconsin vs Iowa Game Thread*****

We'll find out after the season is over if Brock and Owen leave after this year when Fran is paid to move on, we'll also find out if the new coach has your same conviction that Brock is not Big Ten material, and we'll find out if the new coach knows the game of basketball as good as you think you do.
I'll hedge my bet on the new coach. Have a nice day, there's always San Diego St. to root for since Iowa and their roster is not up to your
level on excellence.
This roster is not up to anyone that has an eye for basketball, level of excellence. And I'll hedge my bet that a new coach will bring in a new point guard to start over Brock.

He had a very good showing in the Purdue game...get off the bullshit
You mean that game where the other point guard scored 30? OK.

amazing how when someone "talks" to Brock in the offseason, they defend them like a family member. Getting strange at this point

As long as the effort was good, everything is fine. Fran gets his direct deposit and fans like you are happy
That's a big misread. When there is effort by the team, it's worthy of being acknowledged. I wouldn't expect you to know my history on the subject of Iowa basketball or the coaching staff, just as I have no idea who or what you support (or really care). But I saw these guys out there working hard this afternoon, but unable to match Wisconsin in talent, which all in combination wore them down by the end of the game. What that means for this team and coaches at the end of the year will be addressed in due course. That shouldn't be that hard to understand, but maybe it is by some.

Brock is a valuable player, but probably as a spark off the bench, playing 12-15 min in most games, if you have a good team. I don't know if the Thelwell possibility is real, but we will need to add another PG either way IMO. I suspect that if Harding left, it would increase the chance that Owen will also be gone.

Hard to have any idea what is going to happen in the off season, but there aren't a lot of fans who want Fran back. Not sure what will happen with any of the players whether Frans stays or goes.

Neither Brock or Owen are top notch Big10 players. Owen is a quality player, but far from dominate. If he had an outside shot it would improve his overall game. Brock has talent, but just too diminutive to be in the Big10, can't finish at the rim and his 3pt shot is average at best. Owen just isn't physical enough to make a difference in the paint.

And that's ok with me, as an Iowa fan, I want a change of direction at the top, tired of Fran's coaching and ready for some fresh blood.
As a senior citizen, my time is getting shorter every year and since this year is going down the drain like most of Fran's teams the sooner the better, it's time for Fran to go.

I agree….a lot of effort by the guys yesterday. It’s a shame it didn’t pay off with a win.

I almost never comment on the crowd, but since I was there I will make this observation: there didn’t seem to be a lot of energy from the fans. While not a sellout, Carver was mostly full. Despite being a close game until the end, there wasn’t a lot of noise.

Check your stats...he only played limited minutes and had more points per minute and assists per minute than Braden Smith, the most likely Big Ten Player of the year...I love Thelwell defensively, but he gave up most of Smith's points in that game...

The expectation is that they give effort, not sure why they get credit for that.

I get the sentiment, but, if the program is that the point where losing by 11 at home is okay because the players gave effort, then not sure what the point is anymore

see bold: If they are anything like me at this point, they knew it ultimately be another L and it was.

It's kinda like a bad salesman. Hey, I made a great effort, just couldn't close the deal. Too many of those negative results and pretty soon you're shown the door.

How do you figure this? In the Purdue vs Iowa game, Smith scored .775 points per minute and had .10 assists per minute(one of his lowest assists games this year) while Harding scored .478 points per minute with .04 assists per minute. Smith also had more steals per minute and hit a far better percentage of shots, especially on three-pointers.

As much as we would like Harding to be as good as Smith, he is not and probably never will be. But he is sophomore so he should improve to some extent in his last two years. How much who knows?

I wasn't intending to sound as if I was criticizing Harding, merely correcting the numbers in the post to which I replied. I'll let you all continue the debate about his value to the Iowa program. Very few college guards have the combination of court vision, wingspan/reach and tenacity of Smith. Unbelievable that he was ranked outside the top 200 in his recruiting class, another of Painter's great finds. Nice thing is that Smith has a younger brother.

Interesting that you bring up wingspan. I remember a team picture in Harding's freshman year, where he was standing next to Bowen. Not only did Brock look like a regular teenager, who walked in off the street, his arms were a LOT shorter and his hands a LOT smaller. Smith might only be an inch or two taller than Harding, but Brock is effectively much smaller. Athleticism, like jumping ability, is also very different. Smith is an All-American or All-B1G type player. Brock is a decent D1 player.

Wasn't Smith Mr. Basketball in Indiana? A lot of teams were probably afraid of his size but he plays a lot bigger than he is.

Yes, he was Mr. Basketball. Still had zero big-school offers other than Purdue. He's just 6 foot in shoes, as I cited before his wingspan is much more than a normal person his size. Agree that his limited height likely reduced the offers but you can't always measure heart and court vision.

I thought I also heard he was injured his senior year. But could be wrong.
