2018 Softball

Interesting stat that was mentioned today. Iowa has thrown out only 4 of 65 runners. That's tough on a pitcher when every single is basically a double.

And five catchers on the roster. :( Schmiederer threw out lots of runners last year. Injury took her out of the lineup for most the season, so that explains most the poor season stats. Looks like she still has the arm, but hasn't got the accuracy back. In the games I've watched it looked like Devin had the arm, but it took her so long to get out the crouch.

Our base-running this game again is comical. Looking at you base coaches.

On the bright side, Doocy being Doocy! And more than two runs to support her!! :D

Schmiederer has probably the poorest arm for a catcher in the conference. She also takes forever to get the ball out of her hand. Too mechanical. Most of the throws aren't even close to getting the runner out. Safe by at least a step. If I were an opposing coach, I'd seriously consider stealing 3rd.

Lea Thompson is finally starting at 2nd. If she wasn't playing for any reason other than being injured there is no excuse. She looked healthy when she was in there but no one, even her roommates parents, knows why she wasn't playing..

Good win by the Hawks in the 1st game and they didn't give up in the 2nd. HR in the bottom of the 9th to tie it up and then Kilian drives in the winning run.

Wisconsin SS hit her HR over the scoreboard. Longest ball I've ever seen hit in Iowa City in my 10 years attending home games.. Cleared the board by a ways.

The sad thing is that they are immensely better than they were a few years ago. They used to run themselves out of at least an inning every game. Even the year they had the winning record. Looper was asked in post game interviews why there were so many mistakes. In games afterward, she reacted to show that she wasn't happy with the running mistakes and they weren't her fault. The coach needs to take responsibility.

Outfielders continue to make throwing errors that seniors should not make.Throwing home when there is no chance at an out and the on base runner advances.

In game two, Allie's throw to 3rd allowing the runner to go to 2nd was really bad. Mistake a senior should not be making.

Speaking of mistakes, Wisconsin pitching to Mallory in the 7th was a big one. They were in trouble no matter what, but in a tie ball game, pitching to the best hitter on the team with an open base made no sense.

Be interesting to see if Doocy starts today for game 3, or whether Looper goes with Riding (whose ERA is slightly better than Shaw's), with Doocy coming in at the first sign of trouble.

Schmiederer has made me eat my words. 2 caught stealing and a 3 run homer to win the game. She had the game of her life and I'm proud of her.

Her HR was the first I've seen bounce off the fair pole at Pearl.

Hawks split with Nebraska. Doocy and Shaw both with great games.

Iowa has 8 wins verses top 50 RPI teams and currently sit at number 57. Would be really nice to string some wins together, but Minnesota will be a tough task this weekend.

Go Hawks

Trying not to nit-pick, but pinch-hitters were used in Game 1 for Libby (who's hitting .286 and missed a HR by two feet earlier in the game), and Schneider (who has HR power, hit the ball well earlier in the game and had one of the two RBIs).

In Game 2, Devin doesn't pick up a bat in a shutout game...not even in the 7th when we lead off with .198 and .211 hitters, with hot hitters after.

Not sure why Shaw was pulled either. She was pitching a spectacular game. Runner had only just scored thanks to two errors. (Errors should have been on Mallory and Allie BTW - not Bogar and Kurtz.)

Not that every decision in a game has to be by-the-book, but...shaking my head over here.

I finally got the information from an extremely good source that Lea has hamstring problems. Some days are better than others.

I'm sure there are only a handful of people streaming, so I shouldn't expect much, but it would be nice if the home broadcaster actually knew something about the team. (And the rules.)

I watched the stream for just a bit, the only audio while I watched was the PA announcer and that was faint and hard to hear. Only one camera angle (one baseball game was that way also). Other Iowa SB and BB games have been better. I've also been watching streams from student productions in other conferences and the quality has been highly variable, from not bad to complete crap. Always amusing to hear the circle referred to as "the mound".

I also saw some of ISU at UNI, their announcing team was OK, with ex-Alabama player Jadyn Spencer doing the color. Technical quality was piss poor, picture kept cutting out, and resolution poor when not cutting out.

Got swept by a very good Illinois team, but the team showed grit and tenacity. Take a peek at Illinois' batting averages to see why they have the record they do. Their pitching isn't close to Iowa's.

6 errors in a game? OOOOOOF!!!!!

I did like the way Coach is changing up the lineup in an attempt to get better hitters playing. Worked it so Cranker's daughter could be the DP. Probably should have been done a long time before.

Still looking to get to 25 wins somehow. It is doable.

They need to beat ISU Wed. and then win 2 at a good Northwestern team. Finally, they have to sweep Purdue at home. I watched Purdue on BTN one night and sweeping them is achievable.

Luck of the draw, but too bad that of the 4 teams beneath us, we only play one this season. Six errors is just plain bad.

I just noticed that Wisconsin is hosting the tournament this year, would be kind of nice if we could hang on and make the field.

To Looper's credit, despite the struggles there doesn't appear to be a lack of effort or any animosity amongst any of the players/staff. That's good. Sadly I just don't think she's a wise recruiter, or can coach anyone but pitchers. And whoo-wee she's a bad base coach! She and Bogar made another junior high-type running error in the 3rd inning yesterday.

There's probably a part of Barta that's relieved Looper is making the decision easy for him next month.

Watched all three game with Illinois this weekend. Shaw and Riding both threw so very good innings for the Hawks. Doocey, too, but not quite her usual self.

Yesterday's game was frustrating to watch. Six errors and two bad base running mistakes.

Looper got tossed in game two after a non-call for obstruction at home. Good to see her stick up for her players.

The last two games were very winnable. The difference was Illinois stepped up each game and made a play or two while Iowa gave a play or two away.

Nice to see Rozier in the line-up again.

Can't wait to see what next year brings. I'd think this would be a good gig for a coach having a couple good pitchers to build on.

Go Hawks

I don't think Barta has the capital or the guts to be the first B1G AD to hire a male softball head coach....but Rich Calvert is now 35-9 and on a 21-game winning streak.

What female coach would want to come to Iowa, under the circumstances? Maybe a young, hungry one with no resume, or else a career assistant.

I am so disappointed with Looper and Barta. She has destroyed the Iowa softball program and Barta won't terminate her. Her conference record is embarrassing.

Yep I think Megan would be a tremendous Assistant coach and I like the idea of Stacy May. There are alot of other Young coaches out there that would improve this program. I would look for an assistant under some of the successful programs as they know what it takes to be winners.

Excellent point. Can't hire a man, thanks to the B1Gs unwritten rule. And given Barta's reputation, what self-respecting woman would want to work for him? I'm afraid we're exactly where we were eight years ago.

It'll probably take someone with deep Hawkeye ties, like May Johnson.

I believe that May Johnson left the coaching staff because she could see what was happening. They usually fire the whole staff instead of only the HC. She left so she had a chance to become HC in the future.

I know she was a great player for us, but I couldn't see that she had any impact on our hitters while she was coaching, unless maybe it was to get Blank converted from slapping to hitting away.

Agh.... losing to ISU, should be Loopers final Nail. Just cannot keep losing and seeing not much improvement.

You'll never guess what team is last in batting average and runs scored in the B10 statistics ;) Or whose tied for 13th in defense.

Thats simply a reflection of the coach.. No way these Girls were that bad of hitters in HS and Club. The Defensive part is definitely on the coach, that can be practiced. Run scoring goes along with hitting. but should be lumped into OBP.. you get runners on (However you do it) And your chances of scoring go up. Better eye for walks, take the HBP, bunt for hit.. Just plain hit the damn ball.

Is this a B1G unwritten rule or Iowa unwritten rule? I remember the folks saying it was an unwritten rule at Iowa until Bond was hired for volleyball.

Talking softball only. No B1G school has ever hired a man for a head softball coach. Though Rutgers had a male head coach when they joined the league. Maybe Barta will be the first. His excuse could be no qualified woman wanted the job..which very well may be the case.

Looks very possible to have the 5th straight 30 loss season. Gotta win at least 1 at NW or all 3 against Purdue.

Just looking at some precedent. Look up Iowa State softball and similarly inclined Ruth Crowe. She had 9 straight losing seasons, refused to go to events outlined in her contract and by all accounts was very difficult to be around. Iowa State still had to pay $425,000.

Iowa must tread very carefully with their recent history.

I looked to see what Coach Crowe was doing now and it appears she is an artist in Ann Arbor. I actually like her work. Good for her. She probably wasn't getting another coaching job.

The Minnesota Gopher softball program gets coverage regularly on KCRG (ABC Cedar Rapids), because of the Iowa girl(s) on that team, and the fact that they are doing so well this season. My wife and I joke that it seems like we live in MN & not Iowa when we see the constant coverage. Those Iowa girls were big misses by Coach Looper.

Not really the same thing. Looper's contract is up. She won't be fired necessarily. She just won't get a new contract. Barta doesn't have to prove cause.

Yes, you are correct. I did a poor job explaining my thoughts.

Word is out that she has been floating the idea that she can't compete because of facilities. Same argument the coach at ISU used.

I was trying to show that Iowa would need to be careful when they make a decision because of current circumstances.
