2022 Recruiting (1 Scholarship Left): Jaxon Kohler & Josh Dix VISITED Sep3, Tyler Nickel Sep17. Aidan Shaw VISITED Jun23. Kyle Filipowski to Duke

I think not, just another very talented wing.
Doesn’t necessarily mean no Nickel because we are looking at others. Heck, the other day a good looking guy walked past my wife and I. She turned and looked at him and said, “ Wow he is hot “ but she is still with me after 48 years of marriage. Just sayin.......

How many scholarships for 2022? What do you think the chances are that we have more than 3 scholarships to give in 2022? With player movement these days, I think it is very possible.

I keep the thread title and the roster for 2022-2023 in the orig post current. When things change, I adjust both accordingly.

As you know, CURRENTLY there are 3 scholarships left for 2022.

And, as you can see in the orig post, currently, this is the 2022-2023 Roster:

With the Filip Rebraca & CJ Fredrick news (he gone) and the commitment (and reclassification to 2021) from 3 star Center Riley Mulvey, we currently have 3 scholarships left for the 2022 class. In Men's basketball, of course, you can have 13 on scholarship.

ONE ADDITIONAL THING TO MONITOR: due to covid-19, 2020-2021 was considered a "free year" by the NCAA, so seniors Luka Garza and Jordan Bohannon could have come back for the 2021-2022 season. So, anyone listed below (with the exception of Filip Rebraca) as SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS AND SENIORS could potentially play/graduate a year later than CURRENTLY expected.

2022-2023 Roster (10 on Scholarship; 3 scholarships available):

FRESHMEN: 0 players

SOPHOMORES: 2 players

6'7" F Payton Sandfort (***)

6'11" C Riley Mulvey (***)

JUNIORS: 6 players

6'11" C Josh Ogundele (***)

6'4" G Tony Perkins (***)

6'2" G Ahron Ulis (***)

6'8" F Keegan Murray (Not Rated)

6'8" F Kris Murray (Not Rated)

6'9" SF Patrick McCaffery (****)

SENIORS: 2 players

5'10" PG Joe Toussaint (***)

6'9" SF Filip Rebraca (this includes the the covid-19 free year that all 2020-2021 athletes were given)

At this point I am not sure Fran is going to get anyone to commit with how he does business, and I mean anyone that is a 4* player.

DM me.

What do you mean in regards to how Fran does business? Fran’s teams play a fast tempo with a lot of freedom to create and shoot. Fran is loyal to his players, some would say to a fault. Is that the problem? I am really curious why you think four star players will not come to Iowa.

I think the problem has been making Iowa relevant nationally. Iowa did not finish the season well as has been rehashed on this board ad naseum, but there was a lot of attention on the media on a national level. Hopefully, that will help Fran attract some higher rated players if they can maintain a level of relevance. Keegan being mentioned as a possible first round draft pick for next year should not hurt either.

Let's not pretend you are trying to move the goalpost. Your claim was that Fran wasn't closing pg's from out of state not whether pg has been a problem for the Hawks.
What PG besides Gessell was a 4* player that was out of state? He gets the 4* PF and C guys from time to time, but not PG. I am hopeful that Toussaint and Ulis break the mold.

Fran is loyal to a fault. And from an observative view, he does not want to rock the boat to alter their PT. offering Ash instead of going for it kinda sealed the deal for me.

I agree about the loyalty, which used to be a good thing. I can see that working for him with some players and not so much with many others, especially the ones who want immediate playing time.

It does not work to get talented players year after year. If a young guy, say a freshman, gets about 25 minutes per game. No one at that position is coming to Iowa because they get the PT. It is wildly inconsistent PT too. Freshmen play at Iowa, but it seems that it varies widely.

All I am saying is that Bowen is the guy Fran needs to land to change this narrative. If he does not, his fallback will be someone that is a low ranking developmental guy. WHich is not terrible, but it is not going to push the talent level at Iowa.

Guys that have done well despite the low ranking are typically PF guys or SF guys. Not many low ranked guards are game changers at Iowa under fran. I can think of 1 guy, and that is Marble. There has not been a single PG that has come in and been a game changer at Iowa under Fran.

Fran has also offered Trejuan Holloman (73rd ranked HS player) and Seth Trimble (109 ranked HS player) who are both PG's and are currently ranked higher than Bowen. He may or may not get any of the three to sign but Iowa is not out of the picture yet and they would not be considered a developmental player at PG.

Moving the goal post again. Never did you say that Fran can't recruit 4* pg's from out of state, just pg's from out of state. To put a bow on this, you are right. Fran needs to have better success in terms of recruiting, especially guards.

I said players like that for out of state, which would be a 4* PG for the reference I was going with.

I was thinking about Kam Craft and the early videos that he can't dunk. He always layed it in or shot a pull up jumper. Then I saw the dunk video and was impressed! He would seem like a good get.

Did he "shoosh" the crowd after he dunked it?

How many pg’s has iowa had in frans tenure? 3 guys have played the vast majority of pg minutes, marble, gessel and jbo. Think we all want more athleticism, appears that we are finally getting that, but lets not act like marble gessel and jbo were bad pg’s.

Doesn't mean she wouldn't.

Yeah, only 2 of those players were Top 10 in all time scoring at Iowa, and 3 Top 10 in assists. Fran is a master at creating offense, but I would like some more quickness and athleticism without giving up a lot on offense. We'll see if Toussaint and Ulis can pick up their offense, because defensively they both have better on ball quickness.

I'd love to see what Fran could do with an elite PG like Suggs, or some of the great ones he offered in the past. It's not like he hasn't thrown offers to some really good ones (like Burke who picked Michigan). I think we do have some good PG talent, but getting one of his top PG targets in 2022 might get us where we want to go in the NCAA Tourney (sooner).

They were not bad, but they were not great either. Not in the mold of the SF and PF we have had under Fran.

Just like every other year, McCaffery must have at least extended offers to at least 50 kids we would love to see in Iowa uniforms. The problem is in the landing portion of the procedure. I like McCaffery, but he is proving to be very stubborn in changing up his staff to include someone that can actually talk these kids into signing up to play here.

FREE story.

As you will read, Fran is the main recruiter for Jaden.

Jaden has 12 offers, including:
Iowa
Illinois
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Penn State
Northwestern
Minnesota
Marquette
Xavier
Drake
UI Chicago
Southern Illinois

Iowa has offered 6'10" forward Reed Bailey. He's a 4.0 student, and as you can see below, he is a skilled forward who can knock down the 3, put the ball on the floor and rebound.

Package deal?? Reed goes to the same high school as PG Dasonte Bowen, who Iowa is after.

Check these out & watch:

Reed has 7 offers, including:
Iowa
Boston College
Xavier
Bryant
Charleston
Holy Cross
Siena

Love your work, Fran! I forgive you for the Roy Marble thread. 😌

Reed Bailey looks like another good get, depending on who commits. He runs pick and roll really well with a decent looking shot from deep. Not an immediate starter but could be a really good reliable player by sophomore, junior year.

Good work, Fran. Now lock some of these kids down!
I was in KC this weekend at the KC Classic. Watched Bowen and Baily play twice this morning. Bowen is a super smooth PG with great handles. Not a great shooter but solid scorer. Baily is a nice looking prospect. Very fluid and skilled for a 6’9 kid. Needs to get stronger but has lots of potential. Kanaban plays on that team as well but was not as impressed with him. A step slow and not as high of ceiling as Baily. Thought everyone would like to hear about these three.

I've only watched one video, but he reminds me of a quicker Garza. Active, plays with intensity, and scores from a couple of levels. I'd love adding Reed and Bowen to our 2022 class.

Interesting and thanks for the scouting notes. The coaches must have felt differently about Kanaban as thy have offered him as have several other schools, both in the Big 10 and nationally. Will be interesting to see if you saw him on an off day.

Tough time of year for those of us who follow recruiting. Too early for most 2022 targets to commit. 2021 basically done. To quote (misquote!) Tom Petty. The Waiting is the Hardest Part.

It will probably take even longer for commits in the '22 cycle since they missed out on a complete in person evaluation season last year and haven't been able to take visits unless they were self guided.
