2023-24 Big Ten MBB Discussion Thread

Maryland knocking off Illinois on the road is one of the more puzzling results so far in conference play. Illinois could not buy a bucket for a good chunk of the game. Really feels like the minutes are starting to catch up to Illinois' lack of depth now that Shannon is suspended.

Both those teams, Michigan, OSU out recruit us to death. What would Iowa look like with some of those players?
Maryland is only marginally better than Iowa at high school recruiting right now--and that's mostly due to the local talent being significantly deeper. Here's the last 5 recruiting classes for Maryland (I'm using 247 ranks since it's significantly easier to look up past classes):

2024: 1 commit, 3-star #125 ranked kid
2023: 4 commits, 4-star #27 ranked (DMV kid), #75, #173 and UR kid.
2022: 2 commits, 3-star #218 + UR kid
2021: 3 commits, 4-star #48 (DMV kid, Reese), #91, UR kid
2020: 4 commits, 4-star #78, #136, 2 UR kids
2019: 6 commits, 3-star #91, #164, #243, 3 UR kids.

5 of the 6 top-100 kids grew up in the DMV area. They definitely get top-100 talent more regularly than Iowa does, but they aren't in the Ohio State, Indiana, MSU, UM tier of recruiting either.

Maryland owns Underwood. Not too surprising.

UM up 9 on Ohio State at the half on Fox. Dug having a nice first half in his first home game since the road suspension.

Ohio State has the win against Bama, but outside of that game they are now 0-5 against Q1&2 opponents and have no road wins despite playing 2 of the projected bottom feeders of the conference on the road already. This OSU team is looking awfully bubbly right now and I'm not sure they are on the right side of it currently.
Gotta imagine if OSU misses the tournament again that Holtmann gets let go.

Osu recruits well. Too well.
They have lost frosh to the NBA the last 2 years. That makes it hard to develop chemistry.
That big okpara of OSU is a raw stud.
This league is a clump of mediocre teams....but sometimes that sharpens them for tourney.

If they make the tournament

Xavier Johnson has decided to take the mantle of dirtiest player in the Big Ten this year. Guy saw Paul Mulcahey got a bag from Washington and decided he should try some of his antics I guess.
He's already in the dog house and coming off the bench after the nut-punch from the other night, and now he's just getting a boneheaded, obvious flagrant foul on a blatant shove on Edey.

For those keeping track at home, he now has more flagrant fouls called on him than he has made field goals in the last 3 games.

It's weird he was never like that maybe he is having girlfriend issues

Rutgers pulls it out in OT. Nebraska also likely lost Juwan Gary for the season--to me that injury looked like the achilles, but we will find out more tomorrow. That is a brutal injury for them as they don't go that deep. I'm assuming Wilcher and Rice will see an uptick in minutes going forward.

MSU pulled away to win by ten.
Lots of calls went spartys way late in this one after a tech on Rizzo.
Predictable
