26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

it was a post about willie reporting that the names he's hearing are PK, Nelson, Assad, Cass. Add Schriever to that list as well. But he's not the starter.

Purely hypothetical. If it turned out to be true and they lost a year of eligibility, what might the roster look like for the upcoming season?

Caliendo for PK, Gabe Arnold not redshirting. Keuter not redshirting and in the lineup sometime in Jan.
Not certain they would (or should) burn Arnold's and Keuters redshirt (although it may not matter for ben since he might not wrestle all 4 yrs anyway). If we have new guys at 165-hwt we aren't challenging anyone for a team trophy so might as well save guys for an extra year on the back end

Pk will be back by Iowa at. The others, well who knows.

Most likely Swafford for the first few and Caliendo goes 165 and Pk 174. Just a guess here though.

I can see Gabe going.

Otherwise,
174 Swafford
184 Riggins
197 Glazier
HWT Hill.

Unfortunately, I don't see a single point at Nattys in that scenario.

Hopefully I'm way off.

Already been confirmed on this board. When people keep saying "prepare thy buttocks," welp...

That's every starter from 174 - 285, gone.

Nelson, Abe and Cass lose their final year of eligibility.
It all boils down to whether or not they bet on any Iowa games. If so, they’re screwed. If not, it won’t be a big deal.

It's interesting that you seem to know so much about this. My contacts within the program are as tight lipped about this as they are about an Iowa wrestler's injury.
I'm not the only one on this board who has said it. But yeah. For the exact same reasons we all thought they would. Iowa WBB was just killing it. Why not?

There are tea leaves that are easily read. And there are more and more people being brought in to deal with this for the past few months.

I agree that guys coming in at weight classes where we normally would not bring a transfer in at makes you want to "read between the lines". Steevo36"s comment is correct, preseason preparation is going like everyone is preparing to be the guy at their weight class this season.

Heard from a credible source that no one has been told of suspension/loss of season and that they are preparing as if they are wrestling this year.

Yep. They're going to fight it. As they should. Betting on your school is pretty black and white - but I get wanting to put up a fight.

All you have to do is piece together some of the info released earlier.
26 mentioned as associated with Iowa and knowing the names in the other sports...the percentage of wrestlers involved will be significant.
Hopefully it's not a season long suspension or complete loss of eligibility.

My hope is that several involved have already used up their eligibility.

Right? It’s a moo point if they’re already out of college.

so you guys are counting names and subtracting from 26, ace detectives. i will bet you are wrong.

I have no idea what will come of this, but if you are basing the 11 wrestlers involved based on the original 26 number put out there, I would not waste much time on that. It is what it is. Hopefully a couple duals penalties for those involved and lesson learned is what I'm hoping for.

I count 10 former & current Iowa student athletes being named so far. But I think there's MORE than 16 yet be be named because the UI's May 8 announcement stated the list of 111 individuals included 26 CURRENT student-athletes. The list of 10 student athletes (and one coach) that follows contains at least THREE FORMER student athletes (so there might be more 16 student-athletes yet to be named).

* On March 22, 2023 BB player Ahron Ulis announced that he was entering the transfer portal. He ended up at Nebraska

* FB players Reggie Bracy & Arland Bruce transferred in the offseason.

Of the Iowa student athletes (former & current) tied to gambling, here's the breakdown BY SPORT of who's been named publicly so far:

Baseball:
Keaton Anthony
Jacob Henderson
Ben Tallman
Gehrig Christensen--criminally charged

Football:
DL Noah Shannon
DB Reggie Bracy (now at Troy)--criminally charged
WR Arland Bruce (now at OK State)--criminally charged
WR Jack Johnson--criminally charged
Kicker/Punter Aaron Blom--criminally charged

Basketball:
Ahron Ulis (now at Nebraska)--criminally charged

Wrestling:
no one yet named

Men's Track & Field:
no one yet named

Student Managers:
Evan Schuster, Iowa Men's Basketball--criminally charged (accused of betting on Iowa games over the last 2 seasons)

Coaches:
FB Grad assistant Owen O'Brien--criminally charged

Of course they are, there is always the Hail Mary defense their attorney is going to throw out there to see if they get lucky.

I'll say it again for those in the back.

They DID
I can see the appeal and the hype with the womens basketball last year, but man alive, what were these guys thinking? What a shame for them to lose a whole year of eligibility over some stupid bets, but they should have known better. If true, the wrestling team isn't going to get hit hard, it is going to get beat with a sledgehammer. We just can't have nice things!

I’d like to see leniency due to addictive nature of gambling. A kid under that definition of the act should benefit more from addiction counseling on a first offense than loss of eligibility.

Why?

So as to not punish the person for a possible mental health issue.

What makes you think they were addicted?

Let’s assume the worst of some posters speculation.
125 Ayala
133 Teske
141 Woods
149 Voinivich, COBE, Rathjen
157 Franek
165 Cailendo
174 Swafford
184 Glazier(He was 184 his first 2 or 3 years)
197 Franklin(🤞 AJ Ferrari 2nd semester)
285 Kueter or Hill

If healthy that team can still finish in the 2-5 range.

Cobe, falls in line with other starters 57 and above. Not sure if bet on WBB.

That's three guys- Woods, Franek and Caliendo, expected to AA.

What makes you think they were addicted?
The very nature of the acts along with current direction of addiction theory and best practices.

It needs to be classified as a mental health issue, not necessarily a legal matter. It’s the direction of addiction counseling here on the west coast. I’m just plugging in a new addiction (gambling) to the current model involving drugs.

And I would seriously consider the above defense in these cases.
