26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

Anyone shocked no women named in the investigation

Looks like women were possibly left alone.

A possible legal defense follows.

In case the tweet info gets cut off:

"The defense believes that the State used Geofence, or similar data collection methods, as well as phone pinging data to capture data on the Iowa and Iowa State campuses after which students and other athletes were eliminated as targets unless they belonged to specific male athletic teams, which if true, would be a violation of the Defendant's constitutional rights as the State is not allowed to use discretion when choosing who to apply the law to."

Honest question. Does police patrolling “bad” neighborhoods at a higher rate than “nice” ones violate the same right?

If you are trying to create an analogy I think a better one would be is if the State Patrol only looked at African American drivers when pulling drivers over and allowed other races off the hook. If a State Patrolman accidentally pulled over a white driver, for example, they would simply issue a warning and send them on their way.

Do you think that would fly if the word got out? Or do you think Ben Crump would show up and sue the state for hundreds of millions of dollars?

As noted above, students and other athletes were eliminated as targets unless they belonged to specific male athletic teams, which if true, would be a violation of the Defendant's constitutional rights as the State is not allowed to use discretion when choosing who to apply the law to."

seems like maybe a valid defense against the criminal case

not sure the NCAA will care about equal protection

The NCAA lost the NIL case before the US Supreme Court 9-0 so I wouldn't be surprised if a lawyer threatened to sue to put pressure on the NCAA to back off based on what the State of Iowa allegedly did in its investigation.

The likely justifications may be prosecutotial discretion. The basis for that discretion could be the volume of dollars waged on the college sports with an eye toward the potential for its wagering to be undermined. Prosecutors could claim fiscal responsibility by focusing its investigation of the set of college sports whose active wagering totalled up to some percentage of all college wagering.

If this basis can be shown as leading to the male sports that were investigated then I think the basis for discrimination will fall flat.

That said, wrestling being 4th to men's football, basketball and baseball might be a bit surprising to some.

They are not applying the law any differently by patrolling at a higher rate. They are keeping the neighborhood safer....

Kueter has not even been a heavyweight let alone a college heavyweight and his time leading up to taking the mat will be spent on football so AA out of the gate is a bit of a tall order.
If Cass is out, the only way playing football has a bearing on it is how much weight he puts on, from the standpoint of getting in wrestling shape. One might expect his football season to be over with by Jan. 1, whether he takes a RS or not in football.
In this case, He has three weeks of focus on wrestling without classes.
It’s a tall order, however, placing in the 5-8 range is doable.

It's interesting that you seem to know so much about this. My contacts within the program are as tight lipped about this as they are about an Iowa wrestler's injury.
He also "knew" that wrestlers would be leaving in swarms because of the ferrari family coming in and the Keuter's were rethinking their commitment to wrestling... as keuter was drilling with AJ 🙄

What makes you think they were addicted?
Also… I’m not saying anyone is addicted. But I’m acknowledging the addictive nature of gambling and giving rationale as to why it might be occurring, and methods of curbing that behavior in this, as I see it, “at risk,” cohort.

It's going to be a tough pill to swallow if Cass or Woods lose a season. Looking forward to them having one last shot at champion.

He won’t, he has a “I know something you don’t know fetish.”
I won't give names, but 4 of last year's starters will lose a full year, another just 10%. One backup will lose 30% of the season. Woods is in the clear.

Returning starters not named Woods. Teske, Cobe, Kennedy, Brands, Assad, and Cass. No one has thrown Teske’s name out there. That’s Leaves COBE, Kennedy, Brands, Assad, and Cass. 4 of 5 out for a year. I hope the 10% season loss is Cass or Brands.

Does it seem like they are targeting students at Iowa and Iowa State? Im sure this goes on everywhere.
Could it be that religious zealots in power have chosen to redirect priorities at sinful gambling?

I believe pk will miss a few but not the whole season. Back for Iowa state is the hope.

Most will appeal and could get lightened punishments so I think it’s still premature to mention exact timelines.

In all honesty we might not know exactly what’s going on for a little bit yet. Everyone and I do mean everyone is still in speculation mode.

Cael's religious, but his only zealotry is in wrestling.

Same names I am hearing. Arnold could step in for Nelson and he all ready said he wants a shot a Starcrap. Kueter could fill in at hwt but very doubtful. PK can be replaced by Calendo as for Seibrecht can middle Ferrari make it down to 149… doubtful but something to think about. Bottom line if neither Ferrari can get eligible then redshirt everybody and have a year like Perry’s sophomore year where he beat Hendricks with Woods winning a Natty and a couple other AA’s.
