26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

I believe they wrestled each other a number of times as HS/youth wrestlers and/or were in the same club. You assume too much...where did I say that I favored one over the other?

When were they ever at the same weight? Wasn’t Schriever generally always bigger?

Regardless, HS was 6+ years ago for these guys and youth wrestling was a decade ago. To say a lot can change…

If the gambling punishments got reduced to 1/2 year or whatever length and the guys were able to wrestle would Nelson go 174 or 184? I feel like the team would be better off if he went 184 but he may be undersized to reach the podium.
165 Caliendo, 174 Kennedy, 184 Brands, 197 Assad/Franklin/Galzier or
165 Caliendo/Kennedy, 174 Brands, 184 Assad, 197 Franklin/Glazier
I like the 74 version of Brands. At 184 he was too undersized so unless he's put on significant mass I say leave him be and let someone else adjust. He's finally starting to look REALLY good, though still would love to see some more offense.

I believe we will see larger margins of victory out of Brands this year (if gambling doesn't make him the season).
He's not recovering from Tommy John surgery and hasn't wrecked his motorcycle, requiring another surgery. Coming back from what he did and placing 5th at the National Tournament is pretty impressive. I think a healthy and confident Nelson will be a lot of fun to watch this season.
Brother, I hope you're right because his defense looks great. If he could get some solid offense to go with that defense he would be hard to handle.

Bumping PK/Brands/Assad up probably isn't ideal for them, but it looks like it's the only scenario where Caliendo or PK won't be odd man out.
The little I've seen...I think Caliendo beats PK at 165.
What little have you seen that would make you say that? I haven't seen anything that would make one say that other than the results of the 2023 NCAAs where Caliendo's path to AA was slightly easier than Kennedy's IMO. When looking at the regular season they both pretty much won the matches they were supposed to win and didn't have any bad losses. Caliendo beat Griffin and Kennedy beat Amine; Kennedy's worst loss was to a top 10 guy, as was Caliendo's. So I'm asking - being completely straight up - what have you seen that makes Caliendo the guy over Kennedy? I'm picking Kennedy most every time and think he will be the guy at 65.

i like this lineup over some of the others mentioned, but still am of the belief that a healthy schriever can give teske a go
I don't know. I just haven't seen anything that would suggest a Schreiver victory. Add in the fact that this is Teske's last chance for glory and I see Teske all the way. Would really like to see him battle his way to 7th/8th at NCAAs. Long shot but not impossible...

So you think Cass will smoke him?
If Tony gets back to 270+, I think he can turn him from top. If the Cuban is <250, and doesn't have a 1st period lead, he'll need to take down in 2nd or 3rd.

But we're getting WAYYY ahead of things.

I would love to see the heavier version of Cass back in the game. He looks great at 245 give or take but the larger version of Cass was amazing entertainment at his opponents' expenses.

Firstly, I think they're pretty even right now.

But my prediction is based primarily to the fact that Caliendo is coming into a program with better workout partners than what he had previously.

So I believe he has more room to improve and will have a higher ceiling.

That's it.

Thank you my friend. I think that's reasonable. :)

Schreiver should have more upside if he can stay healthy. Battling for a low AA during a final season might be a great personal goal, but not so much from a team stand point. So a healthy Schreiver losing to a senior with a relatively low ceiling doesn’t bode well for the future, imo.

Did the cuban have a big pull to make 97? I don't see him over 230. Cass will not get overpowered by this guy and has the proper defense to stop his attacks. Cass could get the pin with enough time on top.

Looks like Noah placed ONE freakin' bet on the women's basketball team. And the penalty was extreme, to say the least.

Kirk was blasting the NCAA once again yesterday.

It’s a good move by the NCAA. I worked at a school with a no second chances honor code and we spent a couple of weeks educating new students on how to handle all sorts of situations that could bring up an honor offense.

Just guessing, but with legalized gambling throwing a curve ball at NCAA athletes it could have been the NCAA spent way too little time reviewing scenarios with its athletes and arguably didn’t do enough to prepare student athletes for the decisions coming their way re legal gambling. For example, if the NCAA wasn’t exhaustively transparent about using “geo locating” technology to track and monitor gambling apps then that probably needs to be addressed.

In the meantime, good move by the NCAA if the current direction things are headed holds up.

ISU had a guy that placed one $25 bet on the ISU-Iowa football game two years ago, picked ISU to win, was the only bet he ever placed on anything, and the NCAA told him he was done forever.

The NCAA finally, hopefully, realizes that they better get ahead of this issue.

Good news for Iowa football player and STARTER Noah Shannon (has missed 6 games so far of what is expected to be a 13 game season).

Which also means good news for the 6 Iowa wrestlers (who likely won't miss one single meet).

This is Kirk Ferentz, yesterday evening, postgame, after Iowa beat Purdue:

Today we should be hearing some good news from Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz on IOWA Defensive Lineman starter Noah Shannon.

See the tweet at the end of this post. When Tom Brands says "maybe," I think he is a lot more optimistic than that when it comes to the 6 Iowa wrestlers who have been rumored to have been caught up in this gambling scandal.

I don't think ANY of the 6 wrestlers will now miss a meet. The big question is, when will we see Noah Shannon on the football field? Noah has already missed 6 football games of a likely 13 game season (46% of the season). Talk about a heavy price. The 6 Iowa wrestlers are very lucky that their season starts in November and not in September.

Iowa football is 5-1. Here is their remaining regular season football schedule:

Oct 14 at Wisconsin
Oct 21 vs Minnesota
Oct 28 BYE WEEK
Nov 4 at Northwestern
Nov 11 vs Rutgers
Nov 18 vs Illinois
Nov 24 at Nebraska

Is this the same for wrestlers regarding practice or are they only dealing with Shannon first?

As far as Noah Shannon is concerned, he could practice as long as his suspension was being appealed. Once the NCAA initially denied the appeal, the UI took him off the roster and named him student-coach. Now, with the NCAA changing the rules again, he's back on the roster, able to practice, but not eligible yet to play in games.

I think the 6 wrestlers have been practicing since none of them have officially lost an appeal; heck, the 6 wrestlers haven't been officially identified, as far as I know (the UI has kept very tight lipped about it because of privacy rules and the only wrestler that's come public, as far as I know, is Nelson Brands)

Like I mentioned before, Noah's season started on Sep 2nd and now he's missed 6 games of the likely 13 game schedule. Luckily for the 6 wrestlers, their season does not start until November so hopefully everything will be settled for them by then by the NCAA.

Iowa starting defensive lineman Noah Shannon is still not cleared by the NCAA to play in games.

Kirk said he looks great in practice.

This Saturday will be his 8th missed game out of a season projecting to be 14 games. That's 57% of the season.

He’s projected back after that. That’s 43% of the games in a season where he was supposed to be playing 0%. Pretty good, really.

How good is 0%? Is 43% better or no?

FWIW, Kirk seems pretty pleased they are giving Shannon the opportunity.

You haven't been paying attention if you think Kirk is pleased AT ALL with Noah Shannon playing anything less that 100% of the games this season. Kirk is clearly not "pleased" with the NCAA, either. Anyone who's followed this thread knows all of this.

The NCAA continues to take it's time when it comes to starting defensive lineman Noah Shannon....This is all over, apparently, ONE bet. Noah has now missed 8 of the 12 regular season games. Hopefully the 6 wrestlers are not put in a similar waiting position.

Free Noah Shannon!

They are all awaiting an NCAA rule change. The word from the start has been that next meeting is in late October and that is when it will possibly (likely) be addressed/changed.
