26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

I believe we will see larger margins of victory out of Brands this year (if gambling doesn't make him the season).
He's not recovering from Tommy John surgery and hasn't wrecked his motorcycle, requiring another surgery. Coming back from what he did and placing 5th at the National Tournament is pretty impressive. I think a healthy and confident Nelson will be a lot of fun to watch this season.
Okay, but what about the other 4 seasons when he was healthy? People have said this literally every year with him. It's not who he is, especially against a teammate who he's probably wrestled a million times.

I guess we'll have to sit back and see how it all goes. I'm staying on the positive side and looking forward to what we see out of Nelson this season as long as the "gambling stuff goes away".

Seems odd that they would consider doing it retroactively. Great if you are winter/fall athlete but doesn't do a lot for fall athletes.

If you asked Noah Shannon how he feels about playing 0 games versus 4-6 games, do you think he'd agree or disagree that it "doesn't do a lot" for him?

Oh guys… regarding this whole thing…

I personally like his interviews the best. The only one who tops him is/was Sammy Brooks and the mullet.

Not really. Brands is big ass 174. Kennedy is a 157 if he actually didn’t mind cutting some weight
I actually agree that Brands beats Kennedy for the 174, if that is how this shapes up. Fairly certain Kennedy could never make 157 and that has been stated many times here by people that would/could know better then I. I also think we could see Nelson hit his peak this season, but the match with Kennedy would be a tight one.

Hit his peak. Is that a mountain climbing joke?

He has been healthy and wrestling at his proper weight for 4 seasons?
I can't believe we're going to do the Nelson Brands bonus machine??? thing one more time.

Can you name an example of a wrestler who drastically increased his bonus rate in his 6th year of college?

He's very good and could place high again this year, maybe even make the finals if the weight shakes out a certain way. He isn't going to be a scoring dynamo. A lot of you need to move past the 2018 Iowa State Tournament.

To answer the question though, he was healthy and at 174 in 2022 before he got hurt. His best win was 3-1 SV against Joel Devine (11-11 NQ). He was still good though! He held Hayden Hidlay to a 4-2 match.

I personally make no illusions of him being a “bonus machine”. I do believe we see his best if 100% healthy or close to it, and I base this on how he did last march and the impact of his injuries.

I’m not arguing he’s going to be a bonus machine. I’m just pointing out that your 4 years comment is BS. Thanks for verifying that he’s had very little time at his ideal weight and health.

125 - Ayala
133 - Teske
141 - Woods
149 - Voinovich/Siebrecht
157 - Franek
165 - Caliendo/Kennedy
174 - Brands
184 - Assad
197 - Frankliln
285 - Big Cass

Getting Nelson and Cass back is so big (no pun intended). Hoping Assad can make a jump.
Im hoping for Assad too. He has been caught a number of times and pinned but Brooks is the only one I can remember that really just scored at ease on him. My opinion is if Brands returns he will be the 74 and will AA. Like so many other past Hawks that have flirted with a title, it is going to be great watching Cass go after one in his final attempt.

Bumping PK/Brands/Assad up probably isn't ideal for them, but it looks like it's the only scenario where Caliendo or PK won't be odd man out.
The little I've seen...I think Caliendo beats PK at 165.

Cass, alone, is likely a 9 point swing. Really though, I think most ISU fans want to wrestle Hawks best lineup.
Clone fans wanna win.

It's been an incredible drought.

They don't want to see Hawks at full strength.

i like this lineup over some of the others mentioned, but still am of the belief that a healthy schriever can give teske a go

I agree, actually think a healthy Schriever can beat Teske. Unfortunately, Schriever hasn't been totally healthy since around his sophomore/junior year of high school.
FWIW, it is my understanding that Teske never beat Schriever until last year...so AFAIK, the notion that Schriever could man this spot is legit. He was injured last year...FWIW.

You are correct, he was injured last year and quite a bit of his career before that. Injuries starting in high school have hampered what I believe would have been a great college career. Sure, would like to see him healthy his last 2 years as a Hawkeye.

Highly unlikely Siebrecht can make 149. His alpha according to OPM is 174 so he weighed in >165lbs. Unless he was living on ice cream and his body fat is 15%+, he's not getting there.

I have a dream that someday I won’t have to read the “injured” excuse when their favored guy doesn’t win.

They generally haven’t been at the same weight or the same school until recently. I don’t think there’s much for true history to call on.

I believe they wrestled each other a number of times as HS/youth wrestlers and/or were in the same club. You assume too much...where did I say that I favored one over the other?
