26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

How is that different from any other state?
Not sure, I was responding to El Dub when he mentioned the athletes were all male and wondering if maybe sports betting was more men than women. I think so. I think women seem to love the slots. Since I live in Pa. I am relaying what I see. And I do not see many women bet on sports, I cannot recall any other than my wife on a sports app and one time only.

She grew up in Tampa so signed up for a teaser bet, 55/1 to pick the winner, she won $275 lol. Well we both did that day.

Interesting that it appears to be all male athletes accused of gambling. I’m now curious how gambling addiction breaks down by gender.

Men and women have different levels of gambling involvement (Stoletenberg et al. 2007), with men having higher levels of engagement and problems than women (Stoletenberg et al. 2007).

In a national telephone survey examining the demographic patterns of gambling participation in the United States, men gambled more frequently and had higher losses and wins (Welte et al. 2004). Findings also indicated that 2.9 % of women were problem gamblers compared to 4.2 % of men. Winters et al. (1998) found that 91 % of college men and 84 % of college women reported engagement with gambling (gambling at least once during the prior 12 months period). Of these emerging adults who gambled, 14 % of men and 3 % of women gambled at problematic levels. Gender differences seem to occur as early as young adulthood, but little is known about the risk factors accounting for these differences in gambling involvement.

This is for gambling that occurred on or after May 2nd. It doesn’t apply to the situation of either Iowa or ISU

You are incorrect.

As @west2east and @rcamp67 noted yesterday, when the wagers took place is irrelevant. What matters is when it was reported, which the guidelines specifically say "reported on or after May 2." Iowa reported on or after May 2.

30% of the season is the maximum penalty
Not necessarily.

More than $800 gambled: Loss of 30% of eligibility, plus rules and prevention education. The NCAA stipulated that for cumulative wagering that "greatly" exceeds $800 could result in additional loss of eligibility.

It also states betting on your own games or on your schools games could be permanent loss of eligibility. So if the wrestlers or football players say bet on Iowa woman national championship game it could be season or career ending. Not saying they did just an example.

When this rumor started flying in the beginning of May, betting the women’s basketball final 4 was attached to it.

So, I am still expecting the worst but hoping for the best with all of this. Hopefully those involved weren’t betting too much money.

i wish they'd come out with a decision soon

Let’s hope all Iowa coaches and their staffs were on top of this and communicated with their rosters to not place bets on the Iowa Women’s BB team or the Women’s final four.

Ha! That will be their RE-action, no doubt. But I’m guessing this is the wake up call. The reel question is his hard will they hammer this into athletes’ heads now?

Which unfortunately I believe was done with at least one of our wrestlers. He’s a big time name too. It’s hard to speculate on suspensions due to the newness of all this but I am now more worried than ever. It would be a shame if a 50 dollar bet on women’s bball ends a guys career.

Tell us his name.

that's one of the rumors floating around (that some of the 26 student athletes bet on the women's final 4 run)

I have heard many names that were involved and then found out those individuals weren't involved. So for people to be naming names they must've been told by those individuals or family members. Or they're just posting rumors without verifying anything

the only individuals named so far have been the 4 Iowa baseball players, and that only came out when they were withheld from games

any other names being mentioned are rumors

Should I be Real concerned?

Well no shit they do. Men take more risks in general, since the days of the hunter gatherer’s.

I do not know how you could gamble yourself into debt when gambling on these fandual/ draftkings type sites. You withdraw money before hand from a debit account.

I guess the larger penalty betting on your own school’s team MAY have a bigger penalty because you MAY have insider info. I don’t think there were any players out, coming back from injury, etc that would lead to insider information. So hopefully even if they did bet on the Iowa women’s BB team, it would just be a normal penalty.

Not debt but savings can be wiped out. And a bettor can go from being up to losing their winnings. Either case can lead to desperation. The fact that one can’t directly go into debt gambling online doesn’t do much to alleviate the concerns.

Not that I necessarily agree with the rules.

Unless of course that the money in your debit account was needed to pay your actual bills, like rent/mortgage, utilities, food, etc. Get the point?
