$400,000 / Year + a Car

And, as I have argued before, just what do all these transfers, exorbitant money over the table following back room deals, bidding wars for 18-year-old kids, and players coming to schools with bags packed ready to move to a higher bidder, have to do with universities providing quality education to students? If college sports were just beginning today with the mess particularly football and basketball are becoming, why in the world would any university seek to jump in the middle of this morass as part of their educational mission? And the question becomes, will universities rethink their commitment to a sports system that looks more and more like sponsoring professional athletic teams?

thank you.

it will be interesting to see if Purdue boosters offered any deals and what they added up to.

i wonder what car he will be driving, too. and did they flat out give him the car or will it be like a lease, where the value of that car deal is whatever the lease payments would be over the 2 years (but he pays nothing, of course). if it's a lease type deal where he returns the car in 2 years, the value of that deal could be $15,000 or more over 2 years, based on the vehicle.
Good questions - will the lease and insurance be in his name? Or, it the dealers name that is putting up the car? I sure wouldn't want to own any car that a 20 year old kid is driving.

Not at all.

“Under the five-year deal, Rocket will be the presenting sponsor of the men’s basketball team, which will be known as the “MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage.””
Huh. I thought it was another mortgage company. Maybe that’s fball.

Is this how NIL was intended to work?

I don't think so.

The answer of course is NO this is not how NIL wa supposed to work. Of course with the governing body being the TOTALLY inept NCAA, this was so predictable. The real question is at SOME point will the Presidents and those who are SUPPOSED to be in charge of the member institutions do something about this or just stand by with their thumbs in a dark place while the golden goose is slaughtered. Wait until they lose their tax exempt status because these "student" athletes are employees. I hope all these players are getting good tax advise as well..

UnitedHealthcare is based in Minneapolis.

The first 3 months of this year their profit was over $5 billion.

Their former CEO is a billionaire. He owns the Minnesota United Football club.

Health insurance is such a scam; I am sure we all have or know of cases where you/someone was surprised with a bill. The insurance companies do their best to deny care and even when they don't, they try to pass along a copay or a coinsurance to the insured.
If any one doesn't already realize this, just drive through any major downtown. Most of the biggest high rises are banks and insurance companies.

No doubt and whats his tax liability. Also does the school lose their tax exempt status since these guys are now employee's? I mean "technically" the schools aren't paying the kids, but with the way their tying the recruitment to the "NIL" does this not make the school an agent of the company? It will also be interesting to see just how these companies will use, (if they actually even bother) to use these players to market their business, since they are SUPPOSEDLY being paid for their NIL. Is someone actually going to be monitering that for all these players?

will college sports need a salary / NIL cap to keep it competitive?

i wonder what returning Miami players think of this; will they be getting something as well? team chemistry could go to shit.

what a freakin mess.

i have said this before. Minnesota could be a sleeping giant with all the Fortune 500 companies and wealthy alumni.

Some examples of companies based in Minneapolis/St Paul:

General Mills
US Bank
Target
3M
UnitedHealthCare
Best Buy

And then you have the 4 pro sports teams (Vikings, Twins, Wild, Wolves) that could throw money around.

more questions and headaches than answers.

the kid, in this case, is gonna get 1099's, I believe, where no tax is taken out. I hope he knows that!

NIL deals should not be given until they are on campus, and have played. A majority of these guys won't earn the money. They just won't pan out... Then the guys that do, won't get a good enough deal, because the money is gone.

Then, what happens to the athletic department's coffers?? That money is going to the players. How do facilities get updated? What a mess.
The money is not coming from the Universities. It is from private donors who supposedly are getting something in return for linking their names with these players. I hope JBo is happy with his T-shirt cash!

Ncaa is loving this. For yrs people were arguing that players should be paid because of the amount of $ they were bringing in. So, instead of the ncaa giving in and actually giving the players a piece of the pie they've come up with NIL so that the big donors can pay the players. Genius move on their part, sucks it will destroy any integrity that college athletics had left tho
You are implying that the NCAA is smart enough to have come up with this plan. They fought it all the way and if they are to have any shred of credibility in the future, they have to step in and try to do something now before this gets completely out of control. Otherwise, just disband and watch amateur athletics go the way of the dinosaurs.
So much talk on here about the NCAA tournament. Will anyone really care about it once it becomes a contest between the schools willing to pay the most for their players? Why not just watch the NBA. At least they have some rules and regulations regarding player acquisition.

Exactly. Its been said many times that the NCAA is made up of its member institutions. well, where are the University presidents, Chancellors, Boards of regents on all of this, as they watch this swill unfold......

Greatest healthcare system in the world! Hah! Ask the families that have been totally wiped out by an illness and the resultant hospital and doctor expenses. Other countries take care of their population. We take care of our insurance companies.

For sure. Just on the 400K I'd think he'd owe somewhere around 80K in taxes, and thats not even touching the car, which I would imagine is taxable as well......

yeah, regarding the car, the value of whatever he gets (free lease, free insurance on the car, etc) is 100% taxable

what's the typical lease amount for a luxury SUV, for example? $600/month?

I did want players to get paid a little something but this is getting way out of line. So this will be the minor leagues for pro good luck with this

I'll be honest--this is the top transfer option according to multiple sites. $400K seems fairly cheap--that's like a high end G league salary. College basketball generates much more revenue than G league teams do. Keep in mind that this isn't even a "collective," this is 1 company paying this money. After taxes and lawyer/agent fees, Page will likely get about $250K for a year. That's a great salary, but Page will generate that for Miami fairly easily--just this past year each tournament win came with a $2 million TV unit that is split amongst the conference. There's an insane amount of money in college athletics and a very good player getting a good G League salary just doesn't really bug me I guess.

And for all the folks that want to make this into a weird political thing, let's remember that all of this came about from a unanimous Supreme Court decision. Do you realize how hard it is to get this current SC to agree on anything? Kavanaugh was the one who even wrote the scathing opinion on amateurism being a myth.

I would like to see players sue the NCAA for their fair share.

I would go with stupid and naive. Fran is a big ole turd

I see that you are still butt hurt over everyone calling you out as a complete idiot in the Fardaws thread.

In case anyone missed it, here are a few examples of what others think of Bruno:

He's only involved to complain. That is easily 95%+ of his posts.

Ignore the idiot.

:)

You’re right. He’s not worth my time.

If you ignore him, he's yelling in an empty room. And that's the audience he deserves.

I live in South America. My health insurance is $30 a month for myself and wife. I am retired and wife is younger. No deductibles nor co pays. Medicine included for free.

Sometimes there a delay in services and lines. If you want to spend around $100 a month you can get the Cadillac package.

Apparently this was either Chris Holtmann or Matt Painter.

And if it's Ohio State losing out, with all their money, all I can say is, damn....

This is insane. And it will hurt teams IMO. Can you tell me there’s no animosity with the guards already on that team that Have been playing there a couple years and aren’t getting squat? They’re bitter for sure.

Iowa, Iowa State, and similar schools have a choice. Big Donors + fans collectively raise the funds to keep up with the big boys or their schools become developmental programs for those who can/will.
Here’s the thing I don’t disagree having more donors stepping up to contribute will help. However easier said then done when I’m not the one shelling out my $ as I could only wish to be one of those people.

Plus those are the same blue hairs who many on this board complain about at carver are many of those big donors who consistently show up that people want to move their seats to give to our fair weather students.

NIL will be the ruin of amateur sports.
Spot on . College sports as we know them are toast.
I recommend watching the pros at this point. Middle of the road teams like the Hawks won’t be able to compete for the top recruits. Anyone who develops into a good player will transfer out to where the money is…goodbye college game. Nice knowing you

Here is a possible conversation

'Well I know you had a great season and loved the weather in Miami but we are expanding and opening a branch in Alaska, if you read your NIL contract we are allowed to have you transfer there next year so we can get some star power in the area to open up the state.'
