Clearly Ferrari is ready for the big time. It feels like a missed opportunity not wrestling him this year. He clearly could be like his brother and wrestling Starocci for all the marbles this year. Who knows what happens 4 years from now. Injuries (Kemerer), HEW (numerous 5-6 year guys), portals to someone else offering more money, etc makes 4 years from now unknown. Just like you wont know that there will be a better Iowa team there to compete for the team title in 4 years. He could give the mojo to get better recruits. Instead, it feels like the decision was made that Gabe had to get in the lineup (for Nelson??) so we will make him go up a weigh that he doesn't want to go.

By the same token, he could get hurt at B10s, then we wasted a year for less than 10 matches. The smart play is to redshirt, build an outstanding lineup for the future.

NO!

The idea of saving the redshirt in this era where we're watching guys get free years all over the place is hilarious.
It gives him a chance for a much better career since the top 3 clear out. Everybody is forgetting about Keckenstien also, the defending champion. He looked smaller than Plott, so he could use a year to grow into the weight better. He would have gone 174 this year at any other school.

"wrestling Starocci for all the marbles? Hmmm... Parker K says hello.

I agree, the die is cast. The point more is this may have been a missed opportunity/strategy. It feels like Gabe then Angelo right from the beginning is what many were advocating for and looks like it might have been the right call. Obv it is easy to say with these 20/20 retrospective glasses on.

Unpopular opinion I'm sure, but I hate the phrase " let the weight clear out". I know it makes perfect sense, but it seems weak. That isn't a knock on Angelo or Iowa. I think he's one of the top guys now, let alone in the future. It's just a phrase that gets used a lot now, and I equate it to moving weights to avoid someone. Dang, I really am becoming an old "get off my lawn" kinda guy!!

Better question: Anyway we can make Gabe our choice at 174 ?
Thats one of the points. No, not this year. That ship sailed and I seriously doubt he could descend down to 174 at this point. So, by sitting Angelo, you bumped gabe up and weakened two spots this year. In exchange for maybe (??) one better year in 4 years.

And showed Gabe a little less love than showed Angelo.

As a PSU fan, I think he's a problem, but Im not betting against CStar. He has a history of winning all the ugly matches. Ferrari did make him uncomfortable though, no doubt. He actually looked a little gassed to me and that one down block from him was the most intense I've ever seen from Carter.

All that being said, you let the kid's head swell even more after last night and RS him. You have zero chance at a team title and he'd have to face at least two men who would be expected to beat him. You want as many years as possible with him, BK and Bo in the lineup together.

184 is going to be a great weight class the next few years. Lots of young talent with three or more years of eligibility remaining coming back next year. We win as fans getting to watch it play out.

Parker Keck would eat his lunch. That guy he scraped past in OT last night…Keck teched him like two weeks ago.

There is a case to be made for him going this year, otherwise. Great thoughts on both sides. But this decision has been made, probably by Angelo himself. So we can rest easy.

Don’t you call guys out for stupidest takes you’ve seen on this board???? Well welcome to that club.
I don’t think Ferrari would beat him but he would make it a competitive match. You don’t wrestle Starocci as close as he did and then get taken to the wood shed by anyone.

Styles make fights. Angelo hasn't given up an offensive point this year. Nobody is "eating his lunch." He's one of the best defensive wrestlers in the country. A true elite talent.

Hardly! (WTH am i doing defending Spooner?) Star and Plott both wrestled super tight matches against Angelo and it allowed him to stay in the match, and get the win vs Plott.

Keck rarely wrestles tight matches. He most definitely would have set a high pace and shot more in 1 period than Plott did all match. Different animal, and I think Keck would win by 2TDs at least.

How is this not an easy decision? We have an all-American contender in Arnold if we let Angelo sit. Angelo had a tremendous true freshman year that he can build off of. We are in a battle for second, not first. I like the idea of having Angelo another year on a team with Bo Basset and trying to construct a championship team vs him, maybe, being the difference in securing a 2nd place team trophy. I guess the only way it is tricky is if he is demanding to wrestle this year, and I don't get that from him.

It's a no brainer - get Carter and Keck down the road and Angelo will own this weight class for 4 years.

Running Ferrari out there at 184 the rest of the season is an extremely short sighted decision. You’ve got to take a look at the next few seasons. All of those Covid guys clear out after this season which opens up a lot of podium spots.

Returning 25-26
133-Ayala
149/157-Estrada
165-Caliendo
174-Arnold
184-Ferrari
HWT-Kueter

That’s a lot of potential points returning with probably 3 finalists (maybe more). Guys like Deluca and Ludington could potentially start at 125 and 197…particularly Deluca.

Realistically, this year everyone is wrestling for second. Next year is a little bit more wide open, especially with Penn State’s needing to replace Kerkvliet, Starocci, and Bartlett.

You understand that they did wrestle this year?
KECK was no where near top shape and my guess he had to make a decent cut also. I would be SHOCKED if they wrestle again and the match goes like that 1st one. Maybe StallStar can win IF the REFs let him stall??? KECK will be pushing pace and attacking, when he gets the 1st TD, which he will!!!! The entire match changes!!!

Plott (and especially) Starocci score tons of points just like Keckeisen. They didn't wrestle "tight" against Angelo. Angelo is just nearly impossible to score on.

People let Starocci's first couple years cloud their judgement. Angelo is the only guy he hasn't bonused this year. He's not "Stallrocci" anymore.

It’s a lot harder to score in neutral when your opponent is on a knee whenever they aren’t in tie ups. I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I think dropping to a knee greatly lessens scoring, lends itself to boring matches, and should be (with a rule change) a stall warning.

He will play the edge against PK mark my words

Parker K beat Plott 15-3 three weeks ago. Kekeisen was in easy control and mauled Plott.

Would Keck beat him - probably. Eat his lunch - highly unlikely. Anyone who watched that match saw who was the dominant wrestler. Pretty bad take and I think someone is a bit too high on himself now because he got a compliment.
