Anyone get any birds today?

These Guys Got One!!!!

Ben came home from his second stint of training today. Very happy with the result.

Multiple blinds off whistle using overs and right/left hand backs. Blind/ marked bird/ blind retrieves. He does 4 turn points, next step would be 8(?) Which is only really beneficial for field trials I can keep him on a pretty straight line using 4 points 12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock if you will.

I need to learn how to run him more than he needs to learn at this point. Super excited for the season.

Sept 1, the best day of the year. Doves and ducks.

Where are you getting your pup trained at? I've thought about it, but with pup being 4 now, I'm not sure it's worth it. Her hunting instincts are off the charts, just lacks on retrieving and staying with downed birds, instead of finding them, then deciding to go hunt again.

I might be game. Dog will go all day, and then some.

Dog pro kennels. Todd Vandenord.

It’s upon us. My 1.5 year old black lab mutt (chocolate lab and German Shepard) performed amazing late season. He will be 2.5 this fall. Holding points until told to flush. Retrieving skills need some work but can find the dead bird no problem. I’m afraid a lot of the new hatch was washed away in NW IA this spring. Still seeing them out in gravel roads though.

where at
my dog is 12, she's only good for an hour or so
I have land in Kossuth County and Fayette County. Kossuth hatch was probably washed out...probably even the 2nd, but there is good rooster carryover from the mild winter. Heavy rains just missed me in Fayette, and birds of the year are everywhere but that's a trek for you. My 8 year old GSP will hunt until the 10 o'clock news comes on if you let him.

Saw quite a few baby pheasants here in Kossuth county the last couple weeks. Not as many as I'm used to seeing, but I think we'll have some fantastic bird numbers yet again this year. Heck, the ole mutt has put up a couple coveys of partridge on our walks down the gravel roads the last two weeks. Always fun to see her go on point, and just hold until I release her, gives the guy the itch...

Is it early for the pheasant survey? I just worry about all the rain we had in May-July wiping out nests and eggs.

I guess I'm not exactly sure when the roadside surveys are done or are available to us. I'm sure the rain was detrimental to the bird population, but in my area of Kossuth county, we had rains and flooded out ditches, but I think we'll manage through it. The amount of birds in my area is nothing short of amazing, but we've got some damn good private CRP around, which helps a lot.

What township?

Took Ben back to the trainer for a 2 hour consultation over lunch. The focus was on my handling of him.i ran through the drills he and I were told to practice. Unbeknownst to me the guy had me do a couple more things.

Afterwords he smiled and said, congrats, he just ran a field test. ( minus honoring another dog which Ben has no problem with)

#feelsgoodman.

Was hoping to get a crack at teal at shooting light and Doves at sunrise but ended up running late with a buddies kid who needed breakfast. Went straight o Doves, scratched down a handful, dog did outstanding.

Hamilton county still good cover and population for pheasants.

Scratched down a couple teal this morning on some public in south central Iowa.

3 AM wake up and still went 2 for 2. Dog did outstanding on a cripple.

Rare that I got a blue and a green, buddy slammed 2 blues.

My hunting buddy has wood ducks that have been hanging around his pond that are still fully plumed and I REALLY want to shoot one of those (Drake). That's a bucket list bird for me and if at all possible likely a mount.

Only had like an hour, knocked 4 off going in, had 3 fly over while I was picking up decoys.... 😔

Foolishly didn't take my work from with me so I had to make sure I was home by 9. 😡

Did knock down a goose though, which I need for more training with Ben.
