Anyone get any birds today?

It's opener week! Bird numbers were less than impressive this fall during harvest, and it doesn't exactly have my hopes up. Add in the mutt going into heat yesterday, so that'll add another element to the first weekend or two. Where is everyone hunting at? What are your expectations? Big group of hunters? Just you and the dog? Family members making the trip for opening?

Will be hunting private ground in North Central Iowa, I've seen decent numbers but don't really have a lot of expectations. Myself, 2 Sons, and some friends of ours heading out. Usually around 7-8 people total and at least 3 dogs, maybe 4. All local folks.
We'll be in North Central Iowa as well, just a buddies, and buddies of buddies hunt. Somewhere between 6-8 guys usually, 3-4 dogs. Lost a few dogs in our group since last year, so it'll look a little different. Private ground as well, public gets hit sooooo hard the first few weeks from out of state hunters.

Definitely some healthy bird numbers in NWIA. Down from last year I’m thinking from excess spring rainfall. Saw quite a few during corn harvest. Also a bunch of partridge which I thought was interesting.
Can’t wait to get out this weekend. Unfortunately be my dogs last hunt most likely. 2.5 year old lab who has became aggressive to strangers and recently bit someone over food

I didn't see one partridge last season, so that is encouraging to hear. Will hit the home farms in NW Iowa with my hunting buddy of 30 years now and will have 4 dogs. Also picked up another couple of places to hunt in CRP this year. Saw about 30 birds a few Saturdays back in one place.

No large groups of hunters for me. I know what my partner will do, and he knows what I will do and it makes for a stress-free hunt. It should be done around 9:30 this year. We usually just hit my home place and call it a day, saving the other places for the following week.

Just me and my son. We don't have a dog so it'll be a miracle if we get a couple. Should be a fun time.

I fly back late Friday and have a big duck hunt the first of November. Haven't even thought about pheasant with as hot as it's been. And of course...the rut.

I did kick 2 hens up on a local public ground near me running my dog back to a pothole to see if it had ducks on it the other day.

We only do two large group hunts a year, opener and the last day of the season. Outside of that, it's usually me, the mutt, and a buddy or two. Easy walking, find a few birds, and enjoy the day. We kicked around a few covey's of partridge this fall, but I never seem to see them when we are pheasant hunting. I think they like fence lines and road ditches more than CRP fields.

You'd be surprised first thing in the morning how good road ditches on gravel can be to start the season. Find some decent cover in the ditch and just walk it slowly. That will get tougher once the time changes, but right now the birds are just wrapping up some morning gravel breakfast.

The good part without a dog is if you drop one, often it's out in open field and not in 4' tall cover.

Best dog I have ever hunted over and it’s not even close. These dogs from this kennel absolutely can turn it on and off.

Go all day in the field and then be the ultimate lap dog at night.

I'd like to get one from Faithful Point Kennels. There are some barriers including mostly the no pics.

Shotgun is all cleaned up and ready to go and the Suburban is gassed up. Supposed to get down to 28 tonight, hopefully some frost to help the dogs in this terribly dry weather.

Good luck to all going out.

Just me and my 12 year old Britt. Wife coming to video, could be the last opening day for the old girl

I scratched my hunt, the only standing corn in three mile radius is all around my only spot that hasn’t been tilled up. If anyone has any page county spots, help a brother out

Had my limit at 8:43. A lot of birds. Missed two that got up behind me and flew into the sun. I needed a welding mask for them. It could have been a 10 minute hunt.

Only heard one other shot a few miles away and didn’t see any other groups hunting.

Just a gorgeous opening day, cover and great dogs are the makings for a great time

Corn got out yesterday on the chunk of ground I hunt. The waterway had 7 roosters and 6 hens in it, and a doe with a fawn.

The corn is on the south side of the waterway, beans on the north. Thank goodness the corn came out, or I would’ve been skunked.

30 or so killed today. All private, my dog, one other. Lost a few early without a retriever.

I presume you mean your dog and just one other DOG right? Not just one other person......my math may be a little fuzzy, but 30 doesn't quite pencil for 2 guys ;)

Our group of 4 guys got 11 on Saturday, 3 yesterday. (still too much corn around in both areas we hunted)

Was the first opening day in 13 years I didn't have my vizsla with me.....she still alive, but at 14.5 years old, she just can't do it anymore. So that was a little tough for ol' OV, but other than that, was great to be out in the field again.

Yeah, that's just poor sentence structure by me! I went back and looked what time I posted, and I can assure you that it was very influenced by alcohol. Whoops!
12 guys, 33/36 birds. Quit at 2pm or so. My dog was exhausted, her Garmin GPS collar had her at over 20 miles for the day. Probably too many miles, but she has no quit in her (Yes, I know most say that about their dogs, but she'll get a drink of water while we're bullshitting, and then she goes to hunt by herself if I'm not paying attention to her).

Saw one hen again yesterday with my son. Going by myself today. I have a mile long crick on some private land I'm going to walk. Here's hoping.

Thats awesome....yeah we've had a few of those hunts in our day. Been probably 15+ years ago, but one of the places we hunted was about 120 acres and it was just FULL of birds....like legit, private ground and we were lucky enough to hunt it (now unfortunately is in row crop)

The landowner always had a couple big hunts per year and one time there were 14 total hunters I think it was (honestly was just as much of a management thing as there were THAT many birds), but we split into 3 groups....one group that had labs, the other two groups with the pointers and shorthairs, and I kid you not, started hunting at 8 am and by 9:30 am we had a limit of 42 birds. Each group went to a different corner of the property and hunted their own little section.

It was amazing. And some good comradery and fellowship was had by all after that one!

I would love to do that just once in my life.

The fellowship after the hunt is what makes it worth it. We never chase limits in our large opener group, and actually hunted a littler harder than we have in years past. We had 160 acres of CRP on our last field, we might have walked 10 acres, scratched 4-5 birds, and quit. We were tired, the dog was tired, and we had more than enough birds. We hit two larger pieces of private CRP, and shelterbelt/grove that holds birds, and then the little bit we walked at the last piece.

All in all, it was a great opener. We didn't hunt Sunday, and I was surprised by the bird numbers after seeing so few during harvest.

My 2 golden labs are just over 4 years old. They are as good as I have ever had. My longtime Golden retriever was 11, and was a great dog too, when we got the 2 young dogs. The older dog went the first year and then the next year I had to leave her at home on opening day.

Walking out the door that morning was awful without her. RIP Tory girl.
