Asst. coach’s

Ever watch Wes Unseld, Artis Gilmore, Bob Lanier, Nate Thurmond, Rick Mahorn, Joe Kleine, Willis Reed, Maurice Lucas, etc.? Monsters. Strength and physicality have always been an important part of the game. Basketball was full of bullies in the 70's and 80's. Much more so than today.

Ahh yes, the great Super Sam Williams #53... averaged 25.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game that season.

Arguably the second greatest Hawkeye player ever. Williams had some guns in this linked picture (good read too)...

And yet, all of them got their a$$es handed to them by Kareem. Heck even Wilt Chamberlain was a lanky, lean guy in his prime. Once he bulked up, he became a stiff. The reality is that almost everyone you listed played in the paint with their back to the basket. They were called space eaters at the time and many of them were just big, not muscular. Once you moved away from the basket, most players relied on quickness, and skill. Take for instance Jamal Wilkes. His nickname was "Silk". He was typical of the era.

Off on another tangent. How the HE double-hockey sticks did a thread about assistant coaches turn into a nostalgic discussion about NBA greats? ADD is rampant on this board.

Awfully quiet on the asst. coaching front. If Gatens was gping to be on staff, I'd think he would have been announced by now. Must be some outside the Drake coaches.
Gatens interviewed with BM, but he’s not getting hired. Word on the street is Tobin Anderson, recently released by Iona and former coach of Fairleigh Dickinson when they upset Purdue as a #16, is joining the staff.

That's what I think too. Heck, I'd rather we kept Sprulock. I'm holding out hope for the former Iona HC or a top TT coach that has been discussed.

Fellas--afford Mac the opportunity to build this as he sees fit. If he didn't think the guy could do well, he wouldn't have hired him. Trust the process! He's a bright young coach--something we've been wanting/needing for years!

Agree. I get his loyalty to his drake staff. But honestly none of the 3 move the needle especially this hire. Need guys on staff with more experience and familiarity with big time D1 ball, recruiting etc. so far we have little to none.
No offense, but I don't think coaches with "more experience and familiarity with big time D1 ball" are looking to come to Iowa. Not until Ben can turn this thing around. Until that time comes, he needs guys who are familiar with him and his system so everyone can hit the ground running.

I'll trust the decision making of a guy with an 82% win rate and 4 nattys until he proves otherwise.

Ben and these guys have worked their way to get to this point. They had a very successful climb up the ladder to get here. They earned the chance to compete at this level and I think they will do it successfully.

Licklitet brought his whole staff minus Stevens and those guys were in over their heads especially when it came to recruiting.

Scott frost brought entire UCF staff to Nebraska. That worked out well.

Level of competition is higher and status quo doesn’t always translate up a level. And plenty of former, current asst or even former HC looking for jobs would listen to or want to come to Iowa. Like dean oliver who was turned down.

Fran also hired a bunch of old head coaches and a former Nike executive. Look how that worked out.

The same Dean Oliver who couldn't get a job anywhere else and is now in AAU ball? C'mon man.

And for every example you give of guys coming from lower level with their own guys and failing, I can give you just as many examples of them succeeding.

How about you give him a chance to actually coach a game at Iowa the way he wants to do it before passing judgment?

Such as?

And point with Oliver is he was a former asst at WI who was turned down. He’s not only one and sure are others out there like him who who’ve coach at high D1 that would come to Iowa let alone listen.

You gave 2 examples - Pete Maravich and John Johnson. I gave 2 (Hayes and Unseld) in reply from years earlier. You may want to check the entire 1967 All American team. :)

I see muscles here in the Iowa 67-68 roster. I would say Glenn #44 is the outlier. :)

Looks like they're wearing Converse All-Stars. My first high quality gym shoe from the mid '60's were All-Stars.

not true on Lickliter--go back annd look at the class he had coming in before he was let go.

I wonder what happened to the Tobin Anderson rumors. Any spots left? Director of Basketball Operations? GM/Chief of Staff?
UI Directory has:

Wheeler - Player Development
Sash - Assistant Coach
Williams - Assistant Coach
Barnwell - Assistant Coach

Comparing to Fran's Staff:
Assistant Coaches - Dillard, Gatens, Eldridge
Player Development - Spurlock
GM - Siebert
Director of Basketball Operations - Denning
Vid. Coordinator - Pauley

Jesse Shaw, who is following from Drake, is also in the directory now and listed as "Chief of Staff." Not sure if that is the much discussed GM role or not but he was McCollum's recruiting coordinator at Drake. Xavier Kurth is also in there as "director of player development." Neither one is classified as an "assistant coach" in the directory (wheeler also has a player development title but notably IS classified as an assistant coach) so it's possible there's still a slot open for Anderson
