Bill to ban TikTok introduced in the House

It's too addictive. I know the Chinese are spying on me and I use it anyway.

They need an American replacement for it, not just a ban

I have explained the security issues to the kids so many times....I give up. I'm not helping them out if they get their information stolen. You can only give so much guidance. They will have to learn from their mistakes.

I never said I support the banning of tic tok, I don't know enough about why they want it banned. I'm just saying you and ilk have bought into mass disinformation campaigns fueled by the enemies of this country. What happens to this country when enough lies about elections convince enough people?
Yep, the masses are asses, the governments should decide what everyone hears and what qualifies as truth. What could possibly go wrong?
I haven't fallen for shit, I'm just not dumb enough to believe 80% of the crap politicians peddle like you clearly must.

I don't see this as having anything to do with disinformation or government controlled media and everything to do with China using TicTok as a tool to infiltrate, compromise, and cyber attack every system in the country. Who knows how deep they have code imbedded in that app and deep they are into all of our systems.

I don't see this as a "free speech" issue as there are so many other avenues for free speech for us to use.
Bc you're an idiot who believes whatever your politicians of choice tell you. Of all the ways China could hack our systems, you think a random flipping social media app is really going to be the best source? Lol, some of you are so gullible.

I’ve resisted downloading Tik Tok, and I’ll continue to do. The Chinese access make me a tad worried, but I see how addicted my, no pic, wife is to the app. I’m annoyed AF at the repetitive music people use for videos and some of the stupid voices coming out of her phone. The “oh no, oh no, oh no, no, no” voice drives me crazy. F Tik Tok.

Speaking conceptually, having millions of people voluntarily download an application you created and it becoming a cultural institution is a threat actors wet dream.

Yep it is annoying as hell when one of the boys plays the clip over and over on loud. Tik Tok is the lowest common denominator. Worse than HROT

I hear you. On the flip side, however, you see how dumb the American electorate are as evidenced by 70 million plus voting for Trump last election and him gaining steam now...after everything. Feeding the masses disinformation, convolutiing our issues and making people determined to "fix" our country could very well lead to its downfall. How many tens of millions of people convinced they need to "save" our democracy by destroying it do we actually need for it to happen?
Then consider that the majority of Tiktoers are crooked Joe Biden supporters and you’ve got yourself a true shitshow.

I don't use Tiktok but isn't banning websites and media from other countries something that authoritarian governments do???

So China an authoritarian government controls the content it's citizens can access so we should do the same thing and that's somehow something a democratic nation with free speech rights does????

I don't think we should be copying China.
for the bolded part, what you say is legit but such rules do not apply when dealing with hostile/malign entities. during the cold war we didn't give the same access to our society to soviets bloc as other nations. same here.

for the second part i agree

TikTok? We need to ban Facebook. Young stupid people have time to learn how to do video essays with citations in the descriptions on YouTube. Or to stream on Twitch and shoot from the hip without worrying about jam-packing a bunch of nonsense into 30 seconds to keep it watchable for getting the algorithm to boost it. It's almost too late to learn new tricks for the average Facebook user. Facebook has become a centralized 90s/00s chain email.

Depends on what your goal is. If quantity is the primary goal, I can't think of a better way to do it. Especially since some of those people are bound to have access to things your government is interested in and are worthy of paying attention to.

This isn't about how its used, it's always been about its vulnerabilities. There isn't a cyber analyst worth a crap that has that thing installed on their phone. "There are growing fears the personal information TikTok devours from its users could fall into the hands of the Chinese government."

1000% this. If you are talking to someone in Cybersecurity and they are not worried about TikTok being on phones, they need to be shown the door and not be allowed in the industry ever again. And for any one else in this thread that isn't worried about TikTok, well, good luck to you.

They have been trying these stunts for years. Also a no from me dog.
Can we still get a ban on Facebook and just Facebook with no trojan horse to mess with anything else. Compromise is nobody touches Twitter currently known as X and that gets written in too. No more website bans. I get major FOMO with Facebook existing trying to get my family on Discord. I used to drink and get cranky on Facebook so I deleted it years ago and I don't want back in on that double dutch of a hellhole

Get them to join Go Iowa Awesome.

I bet I quit Facebook 13ish years ago now. I don't miss it.

Big Brother is watching you and has been and will continue no matter what.
I’m not doing anything sketchy so I don’t care, but anyone who thinks they can’t get into your stuff is living in 1974.
And if you think the NSA isn’t inside China’s stuff well then you just keep on thinking that. I have no problem with TikTok going to a US company.

This is the alien and sedition acts part 2.

My confidence in Biden to protect democracy is waning. He doesn't need this power and in the hands of Trump this power is another step towards autocracy.

Think about it, the BBC finds some unflattering scandal about the US President, any US president and bam the president unilaterally bans you from reading BBC news.

Evidently it has bipartisan support and the White House is supporting it. I'm ambivalent and I think social media in general is a big part of the reason Democracies around the world are in trouble although I would be lying if I didn't get in a doom scrolling cycle when they pop up on Facebook or YouTube (although those are shorts and not actually TikToks....unless they were ripped from TikTok) However, it sure would be nice if someone explained some specifics about the dangers they are worried about other than "the Chinese government can get access to your information". If it is so dangerous it requires a ban they ought to be able to present some real examples of what they are talking about.

Well thank God, if there's one thing Americans can come together on, it's getting rid of TikTok.

I'm proud that we could at least find common ground on something..........

I am disturbed that there is bipartisan support to take away Americans free speech rights and hand the keys of authoririanism into the hands of whoever sits in 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

What are we doing here? Having principles means not violating them even when it's hard. We are one of the only nations that doesn't ban hate speech because we value freedom of speech so much. Now we're deciding that we can't visit a foreign website if the president deems it too dangerous.

This js the worst bipartisan bill I have ever seen.

You justify the removal of TikTok (and Twitter) because it's a cesspool of stupidity, that nobody will miss in the long run.

It's like porn. As fun as it can be to watch.....would the world be worse off without it?

Don't overthink things because of politics. Sometimes the solution is often that simple.

You're welcome. ;)

I don’t think it’s about being even sketchy. They just know and can use anything against you. Might just be someone you talk with is sketchy. Might be figuring out your tendencies. I work with these people. A lot of them are weird and scary at the same time.

The back door censorship efforts have been floundering since Musk bought Twitter and exposed the communications from the government, so they’re making the power grab up front.

Hopefully the SC squashes it, because it appears most pols are enthralled with the idea of the government having this power.
