Bleak Future

First time in my 40+ years as a hawkeye where I felt this much dread about the future of our program. Kirk is not going to be able sustain mediocrity. We are screwed and things are going to start to unravel. Got a sick feeling in my gut I can't shake.
After 3 or 4 years we still don't trust our OL to get us 1 yard at crunch time and Barnett is in no danger of being relieved of his duties? Pretty much sums up the state of Iowa FB.

I guess You do not remember the Fry decline , Iowa went 8-5 and it is considered a disappointment , When Fry got sick and Iowa declined the last couple Years of His tenure the doom and uncertainty was real

I remember the Fry decline quite well. The difference was Hayden Graciously realized he was done and stepped down. Also the fry decline was when Iowa was the only College football show in the state of Iowa.

I keep picturing the “Back to the Future” movie poster, but instead saying “Bleak Future” and instead of Marty looking at his watch with the panicked face, it’s KF looking at his notepad with that clueless look he always has on game day.

Maybe someone with skills in that area can come up with it?

Hayden admitted he stayed too long, and also was dealing with cancer. Not sure what part of this was gracious.

That is alternative history. He lost assistance for good reason. Nobody wanted Brian.

Fry's last 2 years of recruiting were good. The last one was really good.

Just amazes me how people do that to Fry. Key players on the first KF run were HF recruits. Barry was hitting Iowa recruit base. KSU was getting good.

That last year was bad but things were looking up.

Not sure I understand this. What “key players “ were part of KF’s first “”run?” I remember Aaron Kampman, Khalil Hill, Kyle McCann and Ladell Betts as seniors on that ‘01 team. Maybe there were a few more. But I think people consider’ 02-04 to be KF’s first run, and I’m pretty sure all Hayden recruits were gone by then.

Gallery, Clauss, Jensen, Greving, Mo Brown, Hodges, Ochoa, Cole. All would have been in the 99 recruiting class.

I agree and have been a fan of Ferentz leaving Iowa for a long time. It is always just more of the same with Ferentz and now Iowa cannot even compete with top 10 teams. But JMO.

Actually there are several similarities now to the end of the 1997 season.
  • Record was very disappointing given expectations (7-5 in 1997, 8-5 in 2024)
  • Losing an explosive back (Tavian Banks, Kaleb Johnson)
  • Senior dominated teams (losing many experienced starters)
  • Head coach has stayed too long, and been unable to evolve to changes in the game
1998 team went 3-8. We'll see about 2025, but it is a difficult schedule for Iowa (certainly compared to 2024).

For those of us that live out of state, its getting kinda demoralizing when you show up to work after a game and coworkers that are college football fans are like, "Sorry about Iowa." or "What happened to Iowa?". They don't rib you anymore, now they seem genuinely sorry for you. That happened to me again today. I'm sure I am not alone.

Come on. Some of this is seriously dumb.

I think most had iowa pegged at 8 or 9 wins at the start of the year given the offensive woes. "very disappointing" more like in line.

Losing an explosive back. You mean like shonn or Albert or Goodson? Yeah no chance next guy might be fine.

Senior teams in college? You mean like every other program to ever exist? Few sophomore led teams.

And doesn't the senior part contract point one? like oh no we're losing all these seniors. Yeah they were disappointing, but we want them back to fix it!

Ive lived outside the state for 20 years. Nobody says jack crap about Iowa unless we are 10-0

Actually, many were saying 10-2, 11-1 and possible playoff appearance.

I was not one of them.

Just how I felt after the election and the future of our democracy.

I feel like Kirk is truly running this thing into the ground. Next year will be worse than this year, and then what? Worse and worse, and worse....And there we are, in the gutter looking for a new coach.

Lisa Bluder did the right thing!

No. That’s not your opinion. It’s a fact we can’t compete with top 25 teams anymore, or at least the last three years.

Having lots of thoughts about Iowa football today. Yesterday showed we can compete with an SEC top 25 team in Missouri. We just can't finish. We can play on the offensive side now but this season we fell down defensively.

This team just doesn't handle playing with a lead well. It goes to what has frustrated us all for years playing not to lose or not sticking with what works. We play these good teams and always get outcoached.

I live in FL and Iowa sports is not even an afterthought here. They don't get mentioned at all by coworkers etc.

Hmm....well, he had cancer. And his "decline" was essentially one bad season and one very unlucky 1997 season riddled with tons of injuries. Iowa was very tough in 1995 and 1996. You feel revisionist to me.

We're hurting badly in several positions, but what makes it so concerning is that many of those are on defense. Our secondary is awful and our pass rush is non-existent. Pile on top the QB conundrum and WRs that are unable to get open, and you have one big shit sandwich. With the lack of success in the portal, things are looking worse and worse. Couple that with our much tougher schedule, and we may be looking at the beginning of a new dark age in Hawkeye football. Kirk overstaying his welcome will be just like when Fry stayed too long. Taking us years to claw out of the hole he dug us into.
