Cesspool Film Rankings and Thinkings

I'd add The Deer Hunter to the mix as one of my favorites of all time. Not always easy to watch, but it is fantastic. Director Michael Cimino rearranged the filming schedule to get all of John Cazale's scenes done first, as he was dying of aggressive lung cancer. He was considered uninsurable, so De Niro paid for his insurance. He died before the film was released.

As a horror and zombie movie fan. I'll give a shoutout to one of the OG's who created a low budget masterpiece that revolutionized the genre.

George A. Romero - Godfather of Zombie movies.

Well, its about time you cesspool degenerates actually get to a topic outside of politics and wrestling that's interesting.

With MSU1458's HORRIBLE take on where Quentin Tarantino's foot fetish films fall in the pantheon of cinema, it's high time the cesspool has a dedicated post on the topic.

My Top 4 directors of all time:

Akira Kurosawa (the absolute father of film)
Kubrick
Hitchcock
Nolan

Hard for me to leave out Tarantino and Scorsese. But they're 5 & 6 for me. Scorsese is a bit overrated to me, but Godfather 1 & 2, might literally be the two best movies of all time.
You do know Coppola did the Godfather movies and not Scorsese, right?

FFC directed those. Maybe you are thinking of Goodfellas and Casino which were both stellar films. Personally, I liked The Departed better than both which is something I never thought I'd say.

Add the Wizard of Oz too. Lol
Witch, the talking trees, flying monkees. Things were way more fun when your brain was developing and reacting to all new experiences.
And the Oompa loompas of the chocolate factory.

Of Scorsese's gangster films I've always preferred Gangs of New York over the other 3.

But if we're talking modern films give me RocknRolla, American Gangster, and Layer Cake everyday all day.

But my all time favorite mob movie is The Untouchables.

Watch Gangs of New York with the captions on. Daniel Day-Lewis sold his soul to the 19th century character he played. An absolute masterpiece in using language to transport the viewer back in time.

I already pwnd myself sir. No need to pile on.

But yeah. I know how you feel. Departed is better Goodfellas and Casino. Which is wild to say. I love what he did with Wolf of Wall Street.

Holy smokes. Someone really knows what he's talking about. Impressive. Very uncesspoolly.
Can't stand either Tarantino OR Wes Anderson, for all the reasons others have mentioned. Tacky and over-referential vs slow and self-indulgent. Also avoid Spielberg when I can. Usually awful, with exceptions.

Can't disagree about Hitchcock. Kubrick, David Lean, or Kurosawa, though. Absolute masters. Also like Paul Thomas Anderson most of the time. FF Coppola, Coen Bros.,and Scorsese some of the time.

Avoid Spielberg????!!!!

Just had to take a look at his filmography... the past decade haven't led to anything exceptional.

But from 75-2012 the dude DIDN'T MISS.

Spielberg has always been solid. Bridge of Spies (2015) is criminally underrated and I absolutely love Ready Player One.

It's not the best, but it's the exact reason I go to the theater to escape from real life. Everything about it was a complete joy to my senses.

Yeah, almost always. The early ones (like Duel) were much better. Now he veers into trying to be "the legend". All money and production, no taste. Also not a George Lucas fan either. Same deal.

As I said, with some exceptions. Bridge of Spies is good.

You got it backwards - his EXCEPTIONS are bad. I get that since Lincoln, you could call his movies trash. But the dude has 2 perfect movies (jaws, Jurassic Park).

You might want to take a look at his filmography from 1975-2012. Not sure there's a bad movie in there (indiana and kingdom skulls is a definite exception)
