I'm going to start a Charlie Moore thread because I truly believe that he is a critical piece to Iowa's future success. Our incoming class has tremendous athleticism so we need someone who is a fearless penetrator and distributor to make it all click. In addition his speed would be the catalyst for our fast break.

I have always believed that the college game is a guard oriented game. Yes Cook is an important part but Moore is critical.

Fran has been after him the longest, offered early and really recruited this kid hard. I hope Charlie realizes what a great fit he would be in Iowa City. Glad he is visiting in September, hopefully Fran can close the deal.

Either Moore or Simpson would be an important addition as a leader/penetrator/facilitator of the incoming 2015 talent. I really think a late push from the home state school is the only reason Moore isn't a Hawk at this moment. He could be the type of PG Fran has been looking for since he got to Iowa- an ultra quick penetrator and disruptor. His size is something Fran has worked with before and is quite happy with, unlike many coaches. I hope we get him.

I really like Moore and feel we have a great shot at him. Simpson, to me, is even better but I don't think the odds are very good with him. Well see.

In terms of continuing to climb the ladder into the higher echelon of the Big Ten, getting one of these guys would be a critical success.

What gives a certain comfort to me is that I don't imagine a major drop off from where Iowa stands now if we end up with someone like, say, a Bohannon.

Agreed a change of pace guard who can penetrate like Moore is exactly what this group needs. He and Williams would be great complements to each other.

Apparently the big dogs like UNC are starting to get interest. I am starting to suspect we are losing ground with Moore. The longer he draws it out, the less confident I feel. Sorry just a feeling.

He would be an absolutely huge piece to putting something together for the future. I disagree with Dan that there would not be significant drop off between having Moore and having Bohannon.

Just to be clear, that isn't what I said. :)

Reading is hard for me

No problem.

If Iowa lands Moore or Simpson it will be a critical success, and can propel us to bigger and better results in the Big Ten.'
If Iowa ends up with a Bohannon type, I do not believe we would backslide from where we are.

Simpson hasn't visited and not sure he will. I thought we made his short list so you never know.

If he visits then we stand a much better chance. Really hope we get Moore or Simpson, just think we have a better chance with Moore.

Awhile back, I thought it was reported that Simpson was planning to visit in September. But right now, I'd put us behind ISU, Illinois, and Purdue for his services. I almost hope he visits and commits to Illinois soon, since that would give us a more open path to Moore.

Yep. I'm reluctant to compare Moore to Ulis but you have to admit they share many of the same skills and characteristics ........ right down to the recruiting contest where Fran will again be battling at least one other slick coach of a traditional basketball program entering the fray late in the process.

Ulis part duex. Just give Bohannon the scholarship now because we all know that is how this is going to end.

This would be very disappointing yet again. Bohannon is not a difference maker. He is a role player much like his brothers. Him leading this team next season as a true freshman is a scary thought. He would be a stopgap option.

Kevin Huerter cut his list to six and iowa is in his list along with creighton, villanova. Notre dame , maryland and michigan. Something to keep an eye on

Plus if he doesn't come to Iowa I'd rather have his talents be wasted at Illinios than put to use at ISU.

Guess I'm in the minority here but I don't feel like any of these pgs are a necessity more of a luxury.

With the teams Iowa has had under Fran so far a penetrating pg would have helped tremendously because most of the guys couldn't get in the lane to create their own offense or set up teammates. Utoff Jok and Gesell can get shots but it's mostly mid range stuff.

But, with the make up of the current group of freshman who are much more athletic I don't see a true point as necessary anymore. Most of these guys are going to be able to get in the lane and create on their own and collapse the D for teammates.

Uhl is also going to kill most defenders off the dribble at the 4/5 spot.

Transition offense should be dynamic.

That is definitely something to keep an eye on. Hope we can get him out here to see the McCaffery's again.

I think a good PG is pretty much a necessity with Mike and Sap graduating. Williams might be good, but he is new to the position and I don't see any other good alternatives. I agree that we have better athleticism and maybe even better ball handling overall, but almost every successful college team has at least one top PG. Having several good ball handlers on the court at a time is even better.

I would say one of the elite PG's is a necessity if Iowa is ever going to seriously challenge for a conference title or be equipped for a long run in the tournament. Fran has a done a great job of rebuilding the program, but a difference-maker at PG would make a big difference. A true point -- paired with the more athletic wing players -- would make Iowa just that more dangerous.

Huerter and Maryland seem pretty close and they recently laid out the royal treatment to him on an unofficial. It looks to me that Turgeon is making Huerter a top priority. Also read an article where he said (going off memory) that he intends to set official visits to Maryland, Michigan, Villinova, and Notre Dame but no mention of Iowa - maybe he is saving the best for last.

Saw the article about huerter cutting his list today. Maryland after other highly touted guards other than huerter. Iowa can see him on playing point guard which could be big. Will be interesting to follow.

Regarding Huerter, I'll be excited if and when he adds us to the visit list. I'm afraid we're a little far from home for his taste.

I'd be more than happy if he picked the Hawkeyes.

Illinois new PG is a 5th year transfer, one and done!

Iowa State just offered Donavan Jackson the PG from Iowa Western. Interesting since Simpson was visiting this weekend in Ames.

I think the two main PG targets are Moore and Huerter. Iowa just made the top six for Huerter.

Sounds like Donovan Jackson was in Ames this weekend and has officials planned to Wichita State and Ole Miss.

Marble played a lot of Point Guard at Iowa and it seemed to help him. Could see over the defense, get into passing lanes, etc.

Chicago press talking a lot about the criticality of Grocer and the Illini getting a commitment from Moore. I guess Norvell, Moss' teammate is playing with Moore this summer. The Illini are after Norvell also.

Hope Fran being in early on Charlie gets us over the top.

It does seem like Illinois is scratching at every door and slipping under the covers of every point guard they are recruiting. And we know McCaffery and staff are hard workers and don't back down from any recruiting battle.

But too be honest, as much as I'd love to get Moore I think this is getting a little blown up. As in, more important than it really is. I've gotten a very good impression of Christian Williams and as long as he doesn't get hurt I think that in a year he can run the team and do so very well.

Now, I may be wrong, and that's where Moore could come in. Or heck, I may be right and Moore ends up half of a tandem. Or he's better than I think. But I love me the idea of a 6'6" point guard with a 7' wingspan, especially when he shows the potential that I think I've seen.

If we get Moore great! If Illinois gets him, good luck with that Charlie. Don't get confident Groce is going to be around. One more bad year this season and hot seat will be putting it mildly. If we don't get Moore, I'll be a little disappointed but not ready to panic at all.

Yeah, but then there's this:

I think Moore is a difference maker. Add his speed and distribution skills to go with our wings and lookout.

We need this kid, Dan. Iowa isn't good enough to accept losing a player of his caliber. I for one will be really disappointed if Charlie doesn't become a Hawk.

So we differ between really disappointed and a little disappointed. ;)

I keep thinking add 6'6" to wings of 6'5" and 6'6" and all good passers and watch the motion offense post up 6' point guards.
