Coach Frank Garza

Last season the focus was on Cook.
Too often he thought that he was a
point guard and brought the ball across
the time line. In reality, Cook was mainly
looking ahead to an NBA tryout more
than being focused on the Hawkeyes.

True statement

Great thread with no crap on the side...Luka's dad could start a camp in Iowa city or the D.C. area...Nike could foot the bill...:p

I've never seen a player improve as much as luka has. All the off-season work has paid off and his dad should get some credit but luka is the one who put forth the effort. I think cook being gone has made a world of difference also.

I primarily see a healthier player, in better shape with a team around him dedicated to getting him the ball as often as possible.

The skill was always there hes just getting 3 times the amount of opportunities.

The biggest difference in his game has been on defense.

Bingo, not just bringing the ball up but taking allot of shots in general and then playing with minimal effort at defense and rebounding.

How absurd is it that Nick Baer blocked more shots than Tyler Cook?

I know @Legend12 mentioned something I read about a month ago. Then this was shared with me. It's from 2002.

He did 30 months in 2007 for wire fraud. Certainly seems charismatic enough but will people trust him with that type of responsibility again?

LOFL!!!

He has less of a shady history than 99% of coaches, assistant coaches, AAU coaches and Legend12.

If Luka stays and can improve as much to next year as he did from soph. to junior, Luka will be scoring 40 per game and Frank can pick his job at any level.

And they can start the "One Shining Moment" video at the McCaffery dinner table.

Luka said a couple of years ago that he loved to watch film of the greatest NBA centers and try to learn their best moves. He has done that part on his own because he loves the game and wants to be the best. His dad has been a big help too, but Luka is very self motivated. Can't wait for him to work with Ogundele.

99% more shady than stealing 10+million from people? I highly doubt that.

I like that the guy is doing stuff for the hospital and other charities. I can also forgive, but forgetting is not gonna happen.

Lets be real, if any other team hired a coach that stole millions from people everyone on here would be talking about what a crooked hire it was "win at any cost" etc.

as did Nunge in his FR season when he blocked 25 shots and added 21 steals in just 15.7 mpg, not only that Nunge was T-5th on the team in scoring along with Pemsl during Nunge's FR season @5.7 ppg

We know Frank can teach offensive, what is his credentials to teach what Iowa really needs....DEFENSE! Not sure that is his expertise

Kudos to Frank and Luka. They appear to have a special relationship and every father and son should be so fortunate to have that. But in terms of credit for Luka's improvement, I would put 99% on Luka and 1% (at most) to Frank. Guys like Luka are going to get better no matter the situation. They are just wired to compete.

That said. no way, no how would I be sending my kid to a Frank Big Man camp.

Easy to say when either you don't have a kid or your kids wouldn't be accepted into the program. My advice is for you to get off your high horse and stop with the backhanded remarks since none of this involves you.

There is no forgiveness if you can not forget. So, stop with your idiotic attempts at shaming the father of one of the best basketball players to ever wear an Iowa uniform.

I'm not sure how anyone is "shaming" the man. Its a matter of public record and he certainly has only himself to blame for things that are said about him. It should be obvious why someone who have reservations about trusting the man. None of this has anything to do with Luka however. Most of the improvement is on him

I think a little too much credit is given to Frank. He should be commended for the work he’s done with Luka but to think he can turn other big men into another “Luka”? Sure, he’s had a hand in his development and possibly influenced more than the average father But Luka seemed to develop himself into quite a HS talent without Frank being around for some important years.

Idiotic would be thinking you must forget to forgive.

My opinion stands....don't like it? Well, I don't care.

We will never truly know how much credit his dad deserves, we aren't there with them and haven't been for years.

He's clearly a very involved dad. Also, while luka no doubt bust his ass giving a true 100%, he's not the only guy out there giving it all they've got every second they can(not the majority obviously). I'd imagine some of those other guys are just as athletic, or more. They are unlikely to be in the player of year topic.

Now, certainly, luka deserves more credit than anybody for his success. That can't be argued.

Without a doubt, Frank is a great teacher for Luka with offense. Not sure if Frank is also honing in on defense though. That being said, no volcano is safe from Luka.

My horse is fine. Someone else seems to be riding quite high looking down on the rest of us plebes.

Those of you who do not want to give much, if any, credit to Frank for Luka's development and say that most all of the credit goes to Luka, needs to stop blaming the coaches for the lack of development of the players including their lack of defensive prowess. Afterall, it is on the players because they develop themselves, right?

No, actually, if you refuse to move on, forget what has happened, you can never really forgive someone because everytime you see that person you are reminded of what they did.

I would say that is generally correct. The coaches give the framework and structure for any player to succeed. Jarod Uthoff developed tremendously in his time at Iowa. As did Aaron White, Olaseni, Peter Jok, Devyn Marble, etc. I've never understood the thinking that Fran was a genius with those guys and not a genius with other players who didn't improve as much. It's not an exact science. Some guys' ceiling is higher than others. Some players work harder than others. It doesn't make anyone a bad person or mean they didn't try.

I would also separate individual player development from defensive philosophy or strategy. But that is a whole separate topic.
