Connor Coming Back For A 6th Year?

Lot of posters measure "playing well" by how well a player is shooting. That is important, but Connor's value is more than shooting. I have always argued that Connor is a very valuable part of the team. His leadership and toughness on the court has always been important. If he and Fran want him back, I am in favor of his playing another year. I do think his minutes should depend a lot on the particular game. JBo and Keegan leaving should open plenty of minutes to go around, especially if Dix redshirts.

i agree with you.

posters on here look too much at the stats and not enough at the intangibles

He is participating in the senior ceremonies tomorrow but that doesn’t mean he won’t be back.

So everyone who was on a college basketball roster durring the 20-21 season ultimately gets a free 5th year?
Yes. For instance, Big Cat could have stayed and had a 5th year last year. Luka could have stayed and played this year like Bohannon did.

I just hope he plays long enough to execute a full court, in bound alley oop.

Seriously, just as a consistent long snapper is completely taken for granted, likewise Connor's inbounding ability.

Well yeah, I knew all last years seniors had the choice of the extra year.

I just wasn't sure how it worked going forward with the other year classes.

For instance this years "sophomores". Last year was considered their "covid year" and its automatically assumed they have 3 more years?

But only if they choose to stay the 5th year it then does not count twoards the limit?

I have to think at some point they may change the rule about it counting towards the limit, but the reasoning is sound. I have a friend, who had a HS senior baseball player in 2020. He was committed to a D1 school to play ball and part of why he picked the school he did (committed as a junior and signed early) was because due to the 2020 senior class, he would have an early opportunity to compete for playing time - then 2020 happened and the college baseball season was cancelled. NCAA gave everyone the extra year since they didn’t get to play and now without the ‘COVID rule’, he was not going to have the path he thought he’d have. That’s one kid in one sport and I’m not trying to play the “poor him“ card, but cascade that problem across a lot of sports and the impact piles up fast. NCAA didn’t want to try to deal with flurries of transfers or decommitments, so they gave everyone the extra year, as some D1 conferences didn’t play football last year and every winter or spring sport was either cancelled in 2020 or lost the 2020 post-season.

Yeah, I have no problem with any of it.

Just wasn't sure how it was going to work years down the road.

Connor may have other plans but if he still has the competitive itch, what about taking a grad assistant position and still retain eligibility? Is that allowed? Does he want to coach?

If so, he gets to help the old man while taking on some admin responsibility and you never know when the team needs someone to step up if the team catches the injury bug.

Depending on the attrition on the roster, and the moves in the portal [hopefully], him coming back could/would make sense. People were upset about Ash getting a scholarship, but Connor coming back would be huge from an experience standpoint.

Who knows, let the team make their run this year, Connor and Fran will make the right call.

He’ll be back.
I think it’s going to depend on what happens around him… who leaves? Who does Fran bring in in the transfer portal? Does Kris come back or try and make it as a pro? How do Mulvey/Ogundele progress?

Based on the emotion, it seemed like both Fran and Connor recognized a possibility that this could be his last home game… but I think that it’ll be one of the last offseason personnel decisions made

I was at the game tonight and enjoyed every minute of it! Connor is playing the best ball of his life, his confidence is through the roof and is far from a liability on the offensive side of the ball. If this is what the future holds, my thought now(though changed) is sign me up. #impressed

If he continues to shoot well through the tournament I’d take him back and even play him some minutes at the two.

He’s probably better than other portal options.

It was a drama-free game, that's for sure. Not sure what is going on with Connor, but when you can get that kind of offensive production out of him and JBo the Hawks are hard to beat. Pretty rare event however.

The Hawks have won a lot of games with these 2 guys on the team, overall they've had a pretty good run. Bohannon missing that free throw to remain tied with Chris Street will be the lasting memory for me, and he made some clutch bombs and free throws during his time. Hope he's got some more in him for the next month. Go Hawks!

One of the biggest things from this shooting barrage that isn't being talked about too much is now defenses have to account for him. For most of the last couple years teams have basically been playing us 5 on 4. Connor brings so many intangibles that as long as he is hitting enough for defenses to have to play him honestly he is more than worth having out there. Him being hot like this is just a very big bonus. If he can at least continue to shoot well enough to make defenses account for him I am 100% for him coming back.

I'll welcome him with open arms if he comes back next season, particularly if he can keep up his shooting. Heck right now he's effectively a GA on the floor. Coaching seems to be in his blood.

I just don't feel he will be back. If he wants to coach, Fran has got enough friends in the business that he could easily get him a spot as a GA somewhere, or even retain him here. But with the nepotism screamers already out there, he probably would be better off elsewhere. Plus it would vary his outlook. He's been learning the same system since he was a little kid. Might do him good to get an alternate view.

As long as people are talking about next season and open spots. 2 signed and likely 4 openings I looked at Iowa recruiting. Apparently for 23 we have 10 players that are listed where Iowa is the favorite destination. I’m sure it’s an exaggeration but with the Freeman verbal and hopefully Pryce Sandfort there are still 8 others with at least good interest in the Hawkeyes. Does Fran bank a couple scholarships for 2022 in hopes of getting a couple more of these recruits in 23
