Crazy QB Competion Coming!

Fan opinions of our QBs are crazy.

ONE YEAR AGO, many were squawking that Mansell was going to beat out Stanley.

Now, Stanley is basically a guaranteed NFL early departure, while Petras is either Tom Brady or Drew Brees, depending on how you squint.

And Mansell is yesterday's leftovers.

I want healthy competition at the position to push them to succeed and be at their best. If Mansell is a great one he will show it in practice and end up on the field. I am on the Petras bandwagon as the successor to Stan in 2020. I just think Petras has it and what he has will outweigh Peyton Mansells skills. If not I'd be pleased to have a mobile gunslinger like him out there.

Not a lot of QB's can make this play. That's a 3rd round NFL draft pick hanging on to him.

IOWAAAAA.0.gif
That is so impressive, he never even notices that dude and fires a missle.

And if Mansell beats out Petras I will be very surprised, and impressed.

My biggest question?? Is Stanley got one year or two years left, his sophomore year was impressive but a lot of growth was needed.. but he has the size, and arm strength the nfl looks for.. if his deep ball accuracy hits this fall.. he could be a potential first round pick..
Stanley is going to have to get better than he showed his soph. year for Iowa to do well. Statistical wise he was behind Tommy Armstrong his soph. season.

Armstrong, 2,695 yards passing, per. 55.2, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and rushed for 705 yards

Stanley, 2,437 yards passing, per. 55.8, 26 touchdowns and 6 interceptions and rushed for -115 yards.

Just Saying.

Six fewer interceptions means a lot. Tommy was a turnover machine. And that hurt neb A LOT.

One is 6’1 220 the other is 6’5 220.. go rewatch the Ohio state game he showed arm strength, poise against a tough team.. you can hold the accuracy to the young wide outs.. if his completion percentage goes up and has the statistics as last year it wouldn’t surprise me one bit for an nfl team to draft him... heck tanner lee just got drafted with way worse numbers..

Stan will drafted in the first half of the NFL draft after his senior year. Obviously N.legend is trolling with his post. N has always had more receivers and an offense that is more pass first. Armstrong was not a legitimate qb despite decent sophomore year numbers.
Stan is the prototypical size for an NFL qb at 6'4" 242 and is going to improve in every area. Stan did quite well in his first year as a starter!

Tommy had 22 TD and 12 Int throwing the ball. Stanley was 26 TD and 6 int. That's a big difference......and that was Tommy's best TD to INT ratio in his career. He could run ,though.

Better receivers and the benefit of having a senior future NFL running back who was the primary focus of most defenses they faced

Stanley certainly has much to improve upon, there is no question about that. However, what you're failing to recognize is:
  • Armstrong's passing game (as a SO) benefited from having a complementary rushing attack that put up over 3000 yards on the ground. Nate Stanley didn't benefit from that.
  • Armstrong benefitted from a combo of a more experienced and more talented WR corps. If memory serves, Kenny Bell broke records for the Huskers. Wester-stache was clutch. And a healthy Pierson-El was electric.
  • Armstrong benefitted from continuity of offensive schemes. Iowa more dramatically changed schemes from '16 to '17.

Far more interested in a QB winning college football games than I am about their supposed NFL potential. That's great if Stanley is the guy, but he better earn it, and he better move aside if someone else proves to be better for this team. Stanley still has a long ways to go, and a lot more on his shoulders without Wadley on the field.

I actually think Iowa's offense will be better with Toren Young ramming ahead and keeping the offense on schedule. Wadley was amazingly explosive and could find a way to go the distance from seemingly any situation... but I think Iowa's offense will work better, especially play-action, with a back like Young. Stanley should look a lot better this year because of that and because he's a year more experienced.

If opposing Ds played gap-sound ball - if they got a hand on Wadley, he was down.

If opposing Ds play gap-sound ball - if they get a hand on Toren ... they better be up for the challenge, because he'll be a load to take down. What's more, he has really nice vision too. Thus, he seems to pick good places to get down field. Some aspects of his game remind me of Adam Robinson ... other aspects remind me of Marcus Coker. I think that Toren will be a productive back for us!

Does Padilla get the Bennaveti treatment?
Has Padilla had any off-field issues? The kid from Illinois who you were referring to switched schools, failed to lock down the starting QB position, and then proceeded to quit on his team. Given that sort of me-first behavior, the Hawkeye coaches rightly pulled the ship, because the scholarship offer has conditions (and the kid didn't uphold the conditions).

My apologies let's go with "Bruner'd"

I certainly hope you are right, but I'm also of the camp that hold Wadley's contribution with higher esteem--especially on third down. We'll see soon!

No doubt Wadley has the sexier highlights and makes lemonade out of super sour lemons. I just think Young will be more of a power back that bruises the D and the fourth quarter will be one quarter too many for the opposing D.

Both get the job done though. Iowa is better with backs like Young, IMO.

Yeah, I never really did get a vibe for what transpired with him. I believe that the coaches originally thought that they'd go a different direction with their LB recruiting - however, I don't exactly know what direction that was. Perhaps they thought that they were about done with LB recruiting and they wanted to get a more experienced LB (like the JUCO kid out of Kansas - who ended up a Husker) or a more versatile LB (like the Michigan kid who flipped to UM)?

Wadley certainly was a real threat both running the ball and catching the ball out of the backfield ... but he still was a bit of a liability in pass-pro. He didn't have a prayer on blitz pick-up against Wisconsin's LBs. However, with a little experience ... Toren has the sort of size and strength to stop a blitzing LB in his tracks.

I'm still caught a little bit in the chicken or the egg scenario when contemplating how Wadley and Fant complemented each other as mismatches against opposing Ds. Toren really doesn't pose a mismatch in the same way ... he's more like a tenderizer to the secondary if he gets past the LBs. When you get DBs shying from contact ... then that's when an O can really start doing some damage to opposing Ds.

This year Stanley will be a better QB if he only improves 2 things, connect consistently on the long throws and tuck and run the ball occasionally we should be a better offense. If the O line gels we have capable running backs and that should lead to more sustained drives allowing the D more time to rest on the sideline. That's not a lot, but it could make a huge difference on our win/loss record this year.

I don't see Stanley leaving after his junior season - even if he has a good season... I would put the percentage of having Stanley for two more years at about 95% ... I think Petras is your future starter ... I think Iowa landed a REALLY good QB in Petras ... I think he will do some very good things.

Agree that I am more concerned about performing for Iowa than NFL prospects (though a good qb in the NFL can be a great recruiting boost) but....

Stanley will not have to move aside for anyone this fall. He is hands down the best we have and undisputed leader on offense. That is not even in question, this thread is about backups.

Stanley and the offense will benefit greatly this fall with more 2nd down an 6 situations 'versus 2nd down and 10.
