That's an excellent consideration. If a defender puts a hat directly on the ball ... it's hard for anybody NOT to fumble. If a D-lineman deflects a perfectly well-thrown ball ... it still, all of a sudden, can become a perfectly "pickable" ball. The randomness of turnovers doesn't always fall the same way twice. However, it IS true that coaches CAN try to coach things in such a manner to encourage good ball security. If a team has good special teams play, has a very good defense, and doesn't turn over the ball ... then at least you're not beating yourself. Plenty of other teams are less careful ... so you can sometimes pick up wins by having the other team essentially "beat themselves." If your O also proves competent ... then you can potentially win even more games. It's a pretty basic formula ... and it's one that BOTH Campbell and Ferentz seem to have embraced.
