D1 Baseball Predicts Iowa 5th in B1G in 2021. On May 6, 2019 IOWA ranked #24 (was Great Season despite 1-7 Finish). 2020 Season Cut Short by Covid

Its amazing how quickly the season is going.

NCAA baseball tournament selections are scheduled for Monday, May 31.

NCAA Tournament games then start with Regionals that begin on Friday, June 4, 2021

The 16 Regional champions will then face each other in the Super Regionals, a best-of-3-game series, to determine the 8 participants in the College World Series.

The College Worlds Series starts Saturday, June 19, 2021 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.

Hoping attendance restrictions loosen up for the CWS once mid-June rolls around.

tOSU leading PU, 3-0, top of 5th

I wonder if they can get the 3 games vs Minny made up; if so, they likely pull even with Iowa & MD in the standings.

Ohio State throwing Burhenn who is their Friday starter. He’s at 100+ pitches now. Purdue treating it like a traditional midweek game with how they are pitching. I know Beals and OSU will run Burhenn out there again this weekend and let him throw 100+. I was very critical about how much OSU let Magno throw in the 2019 conference tournament.

isn't 5 days rest enough? (Pitches today and Sunday)

Good, FREE Story, with great analysis. It will be an interesting 3 weeks, that's for sure!

IU, Nebraska, and Michigan will be playing each other over these next 3 weeks; all 3 teams are scheduled to play the full 44 game schedule. Can IU hold on to first place?

As you can see, Kyle wrote this: "In terms of [Iowa] getting an NCAA at-large bid, I would think three series wins would do the job (27-17 overall), but a sweep mixed in would make Selection Monday less stressful."

As I have noted several times in this thread, D1 Baseball, since February, has considered the B1G a 4 bid league. Iowa has the easier remaining schedule compared to Maryland and is 3-1 head to head. Both of these factors should get Iowa no worse than 4th in the B1G and an NCAA Tournament bid.

As Kyle wrote,

IU: Remaining Games: at Michigan (3) vs Illinois (1) vs Nebraska (2) vs Ohio St (2) at Maryland (3)

Neb: Remaining Games: vs Northwestern (3) at Indiana (2) vs Ohio St (2) vs Michigan (3)

Mich: Remaining Games: vs Indiana (3) vs Maryland (3) at Nebraska (3)

Iowa: Remaining Games: vs Illinois (3) at Northwestern (3) at Michigan State (3)

Maryland: Remaining Games: vs Purdue (3) at Michigan (3) vs Indiana (3)

Current B1G Standings (thanks @Alum-Ni ):

......................................................Games
.......................................................Back
1. Indiana (23-10, .697).................--
2. Nebraska (23-11, .676)............1/2
3. Michigan (23-12, .657)...............1
4. Iowa (21-14, .600)....................3
4. Maryland (21-14, .600)
...........3
...................................................

6. Ohio State (17-14)
7. Rutgers (17-17)
8. Illinois (16-18)
9. Northwestern (12-16)
10. Penn State (13-20)
11. Michigan State (13-22)
12. Purdue (11-20)
13. Minnesota (4-26)

Games for Tuesday, May 11:
Ohio State at Purdue

Games for Friday, May 14:
Illinois at Iowa
Indiana at Michigan
Northwestern at Nebraska
Purdue at Maryland
Michigan State at Ohio State
Minnesota at Penn State

Rutgers is idle until Sat (vs MN); they then play a DH vs MN & PSU on Sun & then 1 game on Mon (vs PSU)
Ohio State just beat Purdue 5-1. Actually gave Iowa a couple of RPI points.

The Buckeyes would still need quite the run to cause any trouble. Still needs to go probably 8-2.

Also, it's interesting that Maryland took 2 of 3 vs Illinois and went from last 5 OUT a week ago to last 5 IN now.

This should help reassure everyone that D1 Baseball has been right since February when they said the B1G is a 4 bid league.

The latest Baseball America Projected Field of 64

Thoughts?

Improvement, because last week Iowa was last four in I believe? I honestly see the winner of the league being given a 2, and everybody else a 3.

Iowa moved up because almost every team on the bubble lost their series. Oklahoma St, Iowa and Maryland were the only ones to win.

UVA and UNC didn’t play, Virginia lost their midweek game.

Great stuff thanks for sharing, looks like the Illinois series doesn't have to be the "sweep" series to cement a bid. Illinois, per Kyle's series write up can and will get on base although if we can work through to their 'pen I like our chances to take 2/3. Bubble is weakening but don't let up Hawks!

Very important series this weekend, Very important.

Washington State who was also on the bubble lost 2/3 to UCLA then turned around and lost their midweek game to Portland.

So it’s reassuring seeing Iowa where they are at, but things can change quickly. All Iowa can control is the games they play. So just win!

Yep. I watched most of the one. UNCG allows UNC to tie it in the 8th, but scored in the 9th.

The one that hurt last night was LSU beat 14 Louisiana Tech.

It’s crazy to me that the SEC and ACC is so strong that if you finish .500 or a game over you very well could get a bid.

Yeah I think a sweep may still be needed, but it does not have to be here. I have my eye on the MSU series for that.

However, if they want to sweep Illinois I won’t stop them.

Even crazier to see the RPI of the Big Ten teams not named Iowa projected in...nothing is normal this season with conf. only games! I thought if you were around 60 RPI in normal years you'd better be an AQ.

This is GREAT news for Iowa and probably speaks to just how weak the bubble is this season.

It is unanimous, per D1 Baseball & Baseball America, that:

* The B1G is a 4 bid conference, at minimum
* Iowa is one of those 4 teams

Iowa has 9 games left. What will they do with this opportunity?

Really hoping for a closer regional. Notre Dame, Arkansas, Louisville, Vanderbilt or Tennessee and I plan on going. Oregon is not helpful.

What does TV coverage look like for regionals? Spotty? ESPN+?

So in 2015 they did whip around coverage. So guys talking at a desk and going for bits and pieces of games. In 2017, there were actual full games on. Iowa-Houston was on in its entire on ESPNU I believe. Iowa and Texas A&M was not on. Iowa and Houston part two was supposed to be on, but a long rain delay didn’t allow that.

So who knows what they will do. ESPN could really do a good thing here with 1,2,U, and News for games.

I want nothing to do with Arkansas or Vanderbilt should Iowa make it. Yeah I’ll be glad, but the writing is on the wall in those.

Do you prefer Texas Tech or Oregon?

I don’t know a lot about either team this year. Iowa went 2-0 against Oregon in the Springfield regional in 2015. The last game, Iowa got out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the Bottom 9th I believe? Iowa could’ve easily lost both of those games.

Texas Techs pitching numbers look very pedestrian, but they’ve played a lot of teams in the top 15. Oregon’s pitching on paper seems better, but their offense doesn’t seem as strong. Bottom line is both of these teams have quality front line arms, but nothing like you’d see in Vanderbilt whose top two pitchers are the #1 and #3 prospects in the draft.

I am just glad we are considered solidly in the NCAA Tournament right now. Its almost a flip of the coin where we would travel to.

I can't imagine every games wouldn't be streamed on ESPNs platform.

PSU-Rutgers now a four game series. Will be one game a day Fri-Mon. Looks like Northwestern is a go for this weekend. It wouldn’t shock me if Minnesota is done.
