If Iowa makes it, I’m pulling for the Tucson,AZ regional.
Sooo...what you are telling me is that RPI will be a useless metric on the team sheet this year? I'm ok with that, all about conf. standings and head to head at this point. Maryland will certainly earn their way in, finish up with Mich and Indiana.Interesting story from D1 Baseball of the possible 20 hosting schools (not that Iowa is one of them...lol):
Some excerpts:
Hosting Sites:
The top three teams in the Big Ten -- Indiana (23-10), Nebraska (23-11), and Michigan (23-12) -- could all be in the hosting mix as well, but none of the three has created enough separation from the pack to distinguish itself as of this week, which means all three are likely to be omitted from the top 20.
At-Large Bids
Big Ten (5 bids)
Safely In: Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska
On the Bubble (In): Iowa, Maryland
On the Bubble (Out): Ohio State, Rutgers
One change from last week: Maryland moves into our field of 64, making the Big Ten a five-bid league. Typical caveat here: the Big Ten is only playing conference games, so it is useless to compare their RPIs to teams from other conferences or to the typical RPI benchmarks necessary for at-large bids. All that matters here are the records and head-to-head results.
The Terrapins won two of three on the road at Illinois to improve to 21-14, with a 4-1 record against Ohio State (18-14), a 2-2 mark against Rutgers (17-17), a 1-1 record against Michigan (23-12), a 1-2 mark against Nebraska (23-11) and a 1-3 record against Iowa (21-14).
That head-to-head keeps Maryland behind Iowa in our pecking order, but the overall body of work is enough for us to put Maryland in the field of 64.
Iowa is also in strong shape, as are the top three teams thanks to their winning percentages above .650.
Rutgers was the hot team after winning back-to-back road series at Michigan and Nebraska, but the Scarlet Knights gave back all of their progress by going 0-4 this weekend, with two losses to Indiana and two against Nebraska. At 17-17, Rutgers is back to seventh place in the standings and clearly has work to do down the stretch.
Sixth-place Ohio State also has work to do, and it lost two of three to Rutgers earlier this year, but right now an 18-14 record is enough to put the Buckeyes a tick ahead of the Knights in our pecking order. A four-game sweep of Indiana remains the highlight of OSU’s resumé.

Do you prefer Texas Tech or Oregon?
D1 Baseball: 5 B1G Teams are In:
Indiana (2, playing at Notre Dame)
Nebraska (2, playing at Arkansas)
Michigan (2, playing at Texas)
Iowa (3, playing at Texas Tech)
Maryland (3, playing at Vanderbilt)
Baseball America: 4 B1G Teams are In:
Indiana (2, playing at Tennessee)
Nebraska (2, playing at TCU)
Michigan (2, playing at Notre Dame)
Iowa (3, playing at Oregon
If the committee follows this thought process then three series wins should wrap up an at-large bid for Iowa.Interesting story from D1 Baseball of the possible 20 hosting schools (not that Iowa is one of them...lol):

I am not sold on the Big Ten getting five teams in, but we have to see how Maryland finishes up because they have opportunities.
Instant Analysis
• One of the bigger questions coming into this year’s postseason field, with the unbalanced and different schedules across the country, how would the committee view hosts? Would it be more merit-based, or would it be more location-based? Clearly, the NCAA went with a combination of merit, and, well, straight RPI. Only Fairfield and Old Dominion are in the Top 15 and did not earn a host site. Fairfield had virtually no shot playing a Metro Atlantic-only schedule, while the Monarchs did not bid to host a regional. If the committee goes this strictly by RPI when it comes to the field of 64, it could be bad news for bubble teams with bad RPIs, with or without unbalanced schedules.
Yep, lack of quality non conf games really hurts RPI Q1 metrics albeit we just need to make the postseason and then see what happens!Ugh. Iowa doesn't have a "bad" RPI but, as of right now, the B1G doesn't have a top 50 RPI team and, thus, no B1G team will be able to point to its record against Q1 (top 50) competition.
As long as we finish in the top four we are in good shape. We have the tiebreaker, head-to-head, versus Maryland, of courseYep, lack of quality non conf games really hurts RPI Q1 metrics albeit we just need to make the postseason and then see what happens!
Really, really disappointing weekend.
Without that crazy comeback on Friday, the Illini would have swept Iowa.
The Iowa starting pitching was terrible on Saturday and Sunday.
But the hitting was not much better, scoring just 1 run on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. 2 runs (or less) will not win you many ball games. I lost track of the number of Iowa batters who struck out; just go back thru the game threads and you will see a lot of "strikes out swinging" and "strikes out looking."
Iowa (22-16, 5th place in the B1G) is now 2 games behind 4th place Maryland (24-14). That 3-1, head to head, against Maryland is now not seeming very relevant.
The top 4 B1G teams should make the NCAA Tournament. Lets hope Iowa does not continue to play itself out of consideration.
And lets hope Northwestern is covid free next weekend or Iowa might be idle and unable to make up any ground on Maryland.
On May 6, 2019, Iowa was ranked #24 in the country. They finished losing 7 of 8 and not making the NCAA Tournament.
Will 2021 be a repeat of 2019?
Lets hope not!
GO HAWKS!!!
It kind of already is. Iowa has lost 3/4 if you count game two vs Penn State, very disappointing. I’m not sure why this is a trend with Iowa, but it certainly is.
Appreciate it. May be doing some women’s basketball this winter, but that has not been determined yet.@KyleHuesmann we appreciate all you have done and are doing. Iowa Baseball has needed a dedicated reporter like this for a long time. Keep up the good work, and hope you’re back at Banks next year. Hopefully Iowa is at TD Ameritrade for the conference tournament and you can make that trip too.
Does the Big Ten become a three bid league at that point? I could see it.Before everyone writes off Iowa's chances for an NCAA Tournament bid, remember this.
The B1G is considered a 4 bid to the NCAA Tournament league.
I could see Maryland finishing 2-4 vs Michigan & IU.
I could see Iowa finishing 5-1 vs N'w and MSU.
That would put Iowa solely in 4th place in the B1G with these records:
27-17 IOWA
26-18 Maryland
And if Iowa and Maryland tie for 4th? Well, don't forget: Iowa has the 3 games to 1 head to head tie breaker over Maryland.
Sure, last weekend sucked. But Maryland might/hopefully will have 2 sucky weekends in a row against 2 of the B1G's best teams.
It ain't over just yet. And over the next 2 weekends, we will all become Michigan and Indiana fans.
Maryland's (24-14) remaining games:
3 at Michigan (25-13)
3 at Indiana (24-12)
Iowa's (22-16) remaining games:
3 at Northwestern (12-17)
3 at Michigan State (15-23)

I personally think Fairfield rolls through the MAAC Tournament honestly.
Just wait. I have an article in the works regarding all of this.5 bids for the B1G?

John Sonedecker: Why can't the Big Ten get some love. You keep bouncing Michigan, Nebraska and Indiana in and out of the #21-25 rankings. Is it their conference-only schedule? How many Big Ten teams do you think will make it into the NCAA Tournament? Last week, I think you even projected five (5): Nebraska, Indiana, Michigan, Maryland and Iowa.
Aaron Fitt: I think I still see five bids for the Big Ten, although Iowa definitely hurt its case with that home series loss to Illinois. As for the Top 25, those teams just keep beating each other up -- every time we bring one in, it loses its weekend and falls back out.
------------------------------------------------
Matthew S: The Big Ten obviously left the softball selection show feeling slighted, with only three teams in and Michigan not getting a hosting spot. Different sport and different committee, but do you feel that's an ominous message for how the baseball selection committee is going to handle the B1G?
Kendall Rogers: Matthew -- the committees are vastly different in some ways, but I can tell you there are some folks on the current committee who wonder how much stock you can put into anything out of the Big Ten this spring. With that said, I would certainly have Michigan, Nebraska and Indiana in.....would it surprise me if those are the only teams who made the field? Not really. I would have Maryland in, but not sure the committee would agree at the moment.
------------------------------------------------
Matt: How wobbly is Iowa right now after losing two of three to Illinois and falling two games behind Maryland in the Big Ten standings?
Aaron Fitt: I alluded to this earlier, but that was a big setback. "Wobbly" is the right word; we'll see if we've still got room for the Hawkeyes when we build our field of 64 tonight. If they're in, they'll likely be one of the last teams in.
Kendall Rogers: Sitting in fifth place and two games back of fourth-place Maryland, I would have Iowa on the bad side of the bubble right now. The Hawkeyes will need to finish very strong to get in, IMO.

Is there a path to an at-large bid for Iowa?
After dropping two of three this past weekend, there's still a path for Iowa to get into the NCAA Tournament.iowa.rivals.com
Coach Heller just said he will be told early in the week if there is a chance it will get canceled. He did not really know.I am curious when we will know about the weekends games for sure?

Gonna depend if Minnesota wants to get swept this weekend or just not play again.Hopefully there is a contingency plan with Purdue in place?

Could get a single game midweek with Nebraska if not.
Yep. But I would be worried 4-0 would not be enough. That would be 26-16, but I guess you would be 3-3 vs Nebraska.Part of me is almost tempted to say if it comes to a single game against Nebraska, you start Wallace then roll the dice with Davitt, Irvine, and Baumann at MSU.

If Iowa goes 5-1 or better, I think they’ll be sweating regardless on selection Monday. It’s imperative that one or more of the teams fall even or below Iowa in the standings.

Are you suggesting Minnesota would just willingly decide not to play?Gonna depend if Minnesota wants to get swept this weekend or just not play again.

Yes, but I’m not serious. It will depend if Minnesota is healthy enough to play, but they are 4-26, so.Are you suggesting Minnesota would just willingly decide not to play?
