D1 Baseball Predicts Iowa 5th in B1G in 2021. On May 6, 2019 IOWA ranked #24 (was Great Season despite 1-7 Finish). 2020 Season Cut Short by Covid

Might be in another thread however CWS here in Omaha is now planning 100% capacity, no masks and no distancing. So what you're telling me is that we could have had a Big Ten Tourney at TD Ameritrade?? Happy for this news however what might have been. Would've loved to have seen Iowa here! Someday in CWS, someday...this place would be bananas.

I wonder how many guys Northwestern will have available? My glass half empty side says since they are playing Iowa they will be at 100% and come out looking in mid season shape and form.

Alright fellas, remember Iowa can still finish in a three way tie for first. This is my chaos pipe dream that I now wish for. Indiana has already lost to Illinois.

Iowa 28-16 by winning out
Michigan 28-16 by going 2-1 vs MD, 1-2 vs Neb
Maryland 28-16 by going 1-2 vs Mich, 3-0 vs IU
Nebraska 27-16 by going 0-4 in pod, 2-1 vs Mich
Indiana 26-18 by going 2-2 in pod, lose to Ill, swept by MD

Nebraska has seven games remaining. By my math, and I'm not very good at it :) , Nebraska wins the league if they go 7-0 or 6-1 and I think even at 5-2 they'd win it unless Indiana finishes 7-0. At 4-3 they would win it under most scenarios, unless the Terrapins go 6-0.

Now my brain hurts.

Nebraska is going 2-5 because my above scenario is going to happen :)

Ain't that the truth
my gosh, Western Illinois was playing at Louisville for crying out loud but hey, the B1G better play it safe and play conference only

It would be interesting to see how many teams in each D1 baseball conference had covid issues that caused postponement of games. The B1G has had what, 2 schools of 13 (Minnesota & Northwestern)? Its not like playing in conference helped with covid issues.

Did a formal announcement ever come out why the B1G went conference only? Was it because playing nonconference opponents would have demanded that the out of conference schools follow the B1G protocols (where the B1G might have to pay for some/most of the testing)?

Bubble Teams - 5/19 update
Clemson
LSU.............................................L NW ST
Indiana State
Virginia
Maryland
Alabama
Georgia.....................................L Ga Tech
UC Santa Barbara
Virginia Tech
Florida Atlantic
South Carolina-Upstate.........L L'Ville
Wichita State
Tulane

Iowa

Tulane lost game one to Cincinnati today, currently ahead in game two.
Wichita State won their first game, currently ahead in game two.
Virginia up big on BC
Clemson losing to Duke, but Duke is on a roll and now will play themselves simply due to being in the ACC
Virginia Tech down big to ND
Georgia Tech up on UNC, but it’s very early.

All the SEC games just started, so too early.

I haven't seen a formal reason

You can probably add Duke to the bubble now.

What the NCAA Softball Selections Taught Us
I always keep a little bit of a side eye on how the NCAA Softball field of 64 selections turn out. I know the committees for both are widely different but you can always get little hints of what the college baseball selection committee might do for our sport. Especially for this season when both sports were dealing with the COVID crisis across the country and a ton of cancellations and program shutdowns.

And on Sunday the committee announced their field of teams and the tournament gets underway this weekend. Here are some of the things that jumped out at me and how they could prove to be harbingers of what we might see when the baseball field of 64 is announced. (Special thanks to D1Softball's Tara Henry who gave me some great insight on the softball selection committee and how they work in her sport).

1. The RPI was lead on heavily.......unfortunately
Of the top 16 national seeds, only one was from outside the top 16, which was Kentucky getting a No. 14 seeding despite being No. 17 in the RPI. Also, the top seven of the RPI are the top seven national seeds. Only No. 12 RPI Missouri got a top eight seed at No. 8 despite not being ranked in the top eight. And remember, the RPI is a freakin' basketball formula that was forced upon our sport years ago.

2. The national rankings were not lead on.
The top six in D1Softball's rankings were the top six teams in the seedings, but after that it was a meandering, drunken hodgepodge. The most curious parts were that No. 21-ranked Tennessee got a No. 9 seed, No. 12-ranked Missouri got a top eight national seed (No. 8), and the most egregious of all, No. 7 Washington got a No. 16 seed. That No. 16 seed matched their RPI, despite the fact that the Huskies finished second in the Pac-12.

3. The results of conference tournaments were given too much emphasis.
This is never a good sign. In the ACC, No. 13 seed Duke was a bit of a surprise to be included in the top 16 after beating Clemson. The Tigers, in turn, were not dealt a top 16 position as expected. Instead they were given a No. 2 seed and will now play at No. 3 National Seed Alabama. Most thought that Clemson was way more deserving of a national seed than the Dukies. In the SEC, Tennessee was the seventh seed in the SEC Tournament and Missouri was the fifth-seed, but both won their way to the semifinals before losing to the top seeds Alabama and Florida. But on Selection Sunday the Tigers and Vols were rewarded with No. 8 and No. 9 seedings. Finally, in the Big 12, Oklahoma State was given a No. 5 national seed.

4. Try to act surprised, but the Pac-12 and Big Ten were given the screws again.
This drew a lot of criticism from these two Rose Bowl conference head coaches. The Pac-12 only got one team inside the Top 10 seeds (No. 2 national seed UCLA), and the rest of their national seeds were stunners. Arizona was given the No. 11 seed despite finishing fifth in the conference. And as mentioned above, most surprisingly, Washington was given the No. 16 slot despite being ranked in the human polls at No. 7 and finishing second in the conference regular season. The Big Ten was an interesting note as three teams got bids, including two which were in the D1Softball Top 25; Michigan and Minnesota. Northwestern got the third bid. Just like in baseball, Big Ten softball played conference games only so I was really interested to see how they handled the conference in the number of bids they were awarded. It was arguable that the Wolverines could've earned a National Seed, but will play as a two-seed at Washington now.

5. Expect some in-conference matchups in the Super Regionals
The softball selection committee wasn't shy about matching up teams from the same conference for possible Super Regional matchups. They are....

No. 2 seed UCLA matches up with No. 15 seed Arizona State
No. 3 seed Alabama matches up with No. 14 seed Kentucky
No. 5 seed Oklahoma State matches up with No. 12 seed Texas
No. 8 seed Missouri matches up with No. 9 seed Tennessee

So be prepared to see that again with the baseball version of the Field of 64

I will not have a good reaction if Iowa is left out due to RPI they couldn’t attempt to control.

Wallace pounding the zone big time, gets three Ks in the first inning on 13 pitches. That’s as dialed in of a first inning as I’ve seen. Hope it’s a sign of things to come.
