Devries Rumors Getting Louder

There's a reason you see Tom Izzo constantly chewing his players out about defensive mistakes. It's because you have to fvcking coach to get results.
I think it's about setting priorities. Izzo prioritizes defense, you don't play good D, you sit. Izzo probably spends a lot of time coaching D.

Fran doesn't do any of that.

Exactly my point.

Worrying about player personnel is putting the cart before the horse. Fran is the horse and the horse sucks therfore the cart doesn't really matter even though it may be bad too.

The problem with this framing is that it assumes the nil issue is completely independent of Fran and out of his control and that's just not the case. He's a bad/disinterested fundraiser who doesn't click personally with a lot of people and he has very strict strict ideas on how he wants the NIL money allocated that makes it harder to operate in the current climate. Iowa isn't going to be Indiana or anything like that but if you got a big name native son like DeVries in there the money situation would improve dramatically.

So true. He's old man, stuck in his old ways and was never been able to adjust to first the Portal and then NIL. He doesn't raise money, is not charismatic, and even if he were a good marketer/charismatic, who is going to get excited about the program after 15 years of meh?

Otz has buddied up with the richest man in Iowa. There is the infamous picture of Otz hanging out in Albaugh’s Kentucky Derby sweet.

Kirk Ferentz has been seen sitting next to donors at Iowa sporting events.

Has Fran ever been seen publicly with any rich donors?

It sucks, but the job these days is as much about salesmanship and fundraising as it is coaching. I’m not sure if Fran has the personable tools for that role

Relatively minor point but Albaugh is not the richest man in Iowa. Harry Stein is worth more than twice as much I believe, but after a certain point it doesn't really matter much for these purposes.

Stein is Iowa’s only billionaire, I believe.

As if Dallas County doesn’t have enough people with $$$$

Believe Albaugh may have crossed that line again somewhere in the last year or two but yeah Harry was the only one for awhile and it's a sizable gap.

Maybe Iowa needs to tap into Grinnell College’s donor list, based on the $10 million donation Grinnell just got!

One thing I’ve always said about Fran (besides being a very average coach) is he never connected with the fan base… As Barta told me one time after a local IClub board event - that’s part of the job, and was one of the big reasons Alford was out the door … (of course, his record as well)…

Anywho - no longer matters as Fran is done at the end of the year and we can look forward to a new regime …. Finally

When it comes to connecting to fan base which Iowa BB coaches would rank high in this category?

Miller- no
Schultz- no
Lute- not really
Raveling- no
Dr. Tom- not really
SA- no
Lick - no
Fran:?

This group of coaches were all reasonably good guys(sans SA) but I do not see a "man of the people among them.

Beth has had her eye on DD from the beginning. For several reasons. Timing prevented the move from happening last year. So DD couldn’t wait. I think it happens.
What timing prevented it last year?

I’m sure maybe we save some money on Fran’s contract by waiting a year. But we would also have to incur Devries’ WVU buyout now, which is likely a hellava lot more than his Drake buyout.

With Pat moving on, Jacks legal issue, and the team missing out on the NCAA, last year would have been the perfect time to make a change. Any aggressive AD would have

Completely disagree. You don’t push Fran out after one year on the job. That’s not aggressive. It’s poor leadership and haphazard. Especially since i think there eas an understanding then that this may be Fran’s last year.

I think it will work out even better as now DD has proven to be effective at Power 4 school.

DD is 2-6 in his last 8 games. He did inherit a rough situation and another tucker injury, so he gets a bit of a pass, benefit of the doubt. But it’s not like he’s lighting the cbb world on fire either.

I said the same last year and got laughed at. Now we basically have to pay double to get the guy who wanted to be here in the first place. Iowa admin is special.

“One year on the job”

You of course understand that last year was Fran’s 14th season at Iowa.

And you also know that Fran has had multiple disappointing seasons - last year wasn’t the only one.

There is nothing “haphazard” about terminating a guy who has only won 4 NCAA games in 14 seasons. Whether you think Fran overachieved with his resources, it wouldve been certainly justifiable to can him last year given his body of work

In the Big 12 where half the teams are ranked and very few suck. I'll still take my chances with him.

I think if Iowa lets this guy slip away, they’ll regret it for a long time
People in the BB world know full well about how good McCollum is. The problem is, the average fan might not see him as the sexy exciting hire. He is going to get his shot at a school sooner than later and agree that Iowa should make the move soon. He is already a dark horse for Indiana for a lot of people.
