They continue to talk shit and I don't like it

Michigan grinds out a win against untanked Minny "Michigan is good they know how to win"

ND grinds out win against #21 Temple "ND knows how to win they are a playoff caliber team"

But

Iowa grinds out a win against #20 Wisky and we're still pretenders huh

I really don't get this "winning ugly" thing about todays game. They won 31-15. Maryland was never in the game. Not for a single minute. What the hell do they want? Because Iowa didn't ring up 65 points they are somehow not as good of a team? Iowa did everything they had to do today.

Everyone all butthurt about being "disrespected". We went through this same practice in 09 when the team was squeeking through every game.

Shit-talking comes with the territory of being successful. For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone gives a crap about what some ESPN dickhead says. Negative OR positive -- the fact that the IOWA name is being mentioned at such a recurrence is nothing but positive.

For the life of me I can't understand how people don't understand that what ESPN says is picked up by recruits, the CFP committee, and just about every other media outlet.

Whether you want to admit it or not...what ESPN says has an impact.

Would you rather our team suck and not even be mentioned? Like I said - this shit talking and "haters", comes with being successful. I'd much rather have these idiots talking crap about our schedule than being a crappy team who is not even being mentioned.

Stay with me here. I know it can be tough sometimes. I am not talking about the team sucking. Or about positive or negative what ESPN says. I was responding to your comment about why someone would give a crap what ESPN says.

Can you please provide some more meaning to what you just said?

Brief recap:

For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone gives a crap about what some ESPN dickhead says.

My response:

what ESPN says is picked up by recruits, the CFP committee, and just about every other media outlet.

Whether you want to admit it or not...what ESPN says has an impact.

Your response:

You said you couldn't understand why people cared...I gave an answer as to why people cared. You then asked if I would rather have the team suck. Which I said NO. And then you explained that you do care.

So again, I state there is a reason people care what the "dickheads" at ESPN say.

ESPN is just a collection of morons with no knowledge no doubt, but this is all simply due to the fact that Iowa is overall not a top tier program, at least in the national media eyes.

Don't know if a bunch of top 10 finishes would even change that, but it would help.

We will never get talked about how SEC schools, or ND, Michigan, O$U, or teams like that will.

It's just reality.

That is why it makes it even more enjoyable to keep winning and shutting them up.

Summit,

While I don't agree with your viewpoint, I appreciate your explaining. I firmly believe that whatever these guys say doesn't amount to much, and my overall mindset is that any publicity is good publicity.

Big Ten football contract with ESPN ends after the 2016 football season.
Fox has Big 12 and Pac 12, and ESPN shares the SEC with CBS, and the Big 10 with BTN.
ESPN has exclusive with ACC.

If Fox ends up with Big Ten football, starting with the 2017, Saturday night football on ABC will consist of "you are looking live from Durham, North Carolina."

Jim Delaney has to see this, but with Fox desperate for more live programming, and ESPN in cost-cutting mode, lately, don't be shocked to not see Iowa in ESPN, for quite some time.

I know its beating a dead horse, but the media just spins stuff to fit their narrative.

Right now, ESPN has this headline:
Cougars kicker loses game on missed FG
The guy was 5 for 6, and that headline makes it seem like the kicker completely choked away the game...

CBS Sports headline:
Michigan handles Minnesota, but loses its QB
Win by 3 on god awful clock management = handled them.

But on the Iowa game recap:
No. 10 Iowa holds off Maryland 31-15
Sounds like we barely survived. Wish we could have "handled them" and maybe won by 3.

This is the correct response !
Just win! Plus I actually think it keeps us grounded and keeps us motivated! Maybe the negative talk helps us continue playing with a chip on our shoulder!

Hard not to hear the BS ESPN spews but IOWA needs to play a cleaner game and just take care of their assignments. Their kick coverage team better work overtime this week and get their game together. They were PITIFUL in the second half.

What's suprising to me is there are very few voices saying "hey wait a minute guys - they are undefeated".

Great memory for me was in 2002 after we beat Penn State. Mark May and company was slobbering over Penn States offense and how they just refused to quit. It was such an impressive performance. Trev Alberts goes something like "what's going on here? Sure Penn State looked great, but Iowa won the game. Why aren't we talking about that?"

Yes, it would have helped if the Hawks played better in the second half. But Stanford trailed for a good portion of its game and the headline is, "Stanford stays perfect in conference play.". Such a thinly-veiled attempt to gloss over their loss to Northwestern.

Iowa wins by 16 and never leads by less than that the whole second half and the headline is, "Iowa stays perfect with not so perfect performance."

Whether some of you want to acknowledge it or not, there is an overt attempt by the most powerful sports media company in America to frame the discussion and highlight Iowa's flaws while applying verbal makeup to the warts of the other top teams.

Don't be surprised if Okie State's win over a mediocre Texas Tech results in them jumping us in the polls.

"Who cares that they were down 17 at one point. Who cares that their defense gave up over 50. After all, didn't you see all those points they scored!?!?!"
Sincerely,

Nothing ESPN says will keep us out of the B1G championship if we win our division and nothing they say will keep us out of the playoff if we are undefeated. If we go to the playoffs or Rose Bowl that will be plenty for recruiting. If we lose a couple games in the regular season, ESPN is probably right about us

Like it or not what ESPN says has some effect on the committee. It's not like they are quarinteed for 3+ months and only watch games with no sound.

If new Kirk would drop the old Kirk lingo routine of saying crap like, "I don't know how good we are...." and start projecting some confidence to the media they might follow his lead.

I think Kirk knows he's got a good team but he is trying to keep them grounded with this type of talk. Personally, I think if you have good player leadership you can project confidence to the outside world and inside the locker room those players will keep the team grounded. I don't think Kirk believes that.

I agree what they say right now has an effect on our current position but it won't matter what they say after the B1G championship. I would bet everything I own that we will be in the playoff if we are undefeated after the B1G championship.

ESPN is sports entertainment - it's not a public service to provide sports information. And, if you think ESPN is full of morons, who do you think is on the committee - the Supreme Court?

Personally, I'm not even convinced Iowa belongs on the Top 10, let alone the playoff discussion. I'm still in shock that we are 8-0 and this kind of discussion even exists!

All I care about is beating Indiana. I think it will be a tall order.

GO HAWKS!

E(SEC)PN sucks !
Haven't watched those idiots at all outside of being forced when the Hawks are in their pitiful channel. Bunch of overpaid blowhards who are slaves to so called traditional powers and the SEC. Do what I do.. Avoid ESPN

Might as well, though, huh.....

Don't be do sure that an undefeated team can be shut out of the four team playoff. It happened last year in favor of two teams with one loss. It shouldn't happen, but they can do whatever they want.

The whole problem with the media, including the "Almighty" is how many times Iowa has been down this road. Showing some impressive wins, getting the media all hyped up, just to lose in some ugly, ridiculous fashion. If we keep winning and taking care of business, things will right themselves eventually. They are just not ready to jump back on as they have gotten egg in the face one too many times. At this point, it may indeed take a deciding victory in a championship game and may go as far as a deciding victory in a bowl game. But I think the key is we need to win the games we are supposed to win, win some we are not supposed to and not make the stupid mistakes we have made in past games. So far this season, I think we are doing most all of this. Shouldn't expect it to change much over night.

What undefeated team got left out last year? Seriously, I can't remember. Not a power 5 team. I just remember Baylor and TCU being left out but they both had a loss.

ESPN jumped the shark for me when it started going over the top on social issues. I tuned in to watch sports highlights not to hear about gay rights issues or stories about abusive athletes.

When I want news on those issues I watch a news channel.

Go to our ESPN clubhouse page. So did we "hold on" or "dominate" ? It reports both. "Hold on"? C'mon! Stanford held on, Michigan held on. We had at least a 2TD lead the entire 2nd half

First the mighty ESPN is bleeding at the moment with the rising cost of live sporting events while being impacted by lost subscribers. They are dumping big, well-known personalities and laying off employees. This idea that they are going to be the power broker forever might be a false assumption. IBM, AOL, etc. say hello!

Second winning takes care of everything. IF, IF, IF we are so fortunate to go 13-0 we should be in the playoff regardless of what ESPN says or does not say. I personally doubt we can go 13-0 not because we are not good but because it's darn difficult to do.

Seriously, if CJ was 100% this game would have been a complete blow-out IMO ... the nation is correct to a degree about doubting Iowa right now. I love the Hawks and I think they can still run the table, but without CJ close to 100% we are going to have to win ugly ... teams will stack the box and make CJ move (i.e. blitz the crap out of us).

I do think commentary on ESPN could have some effect on the committee, but I also agree that there's no way a 13-0 Iowa team gets left out of the playoff. The SOS issue would be moot at that point, because the B1G championship win would inevitably be over a very highly ranked team.

And like others, I do think 13-0 is pretty unlikely, but heck -- you get to 12-0, you're on a roll, you're confident, you're still the underdog, you play with a chip on your shoulder with something to prove, and. . . many crazier things have happened.

FSU was the only regular season undefeated last year, and was seeded #3 in the inaugural CFP.

ESPN is not a news outlet, they are a troll outlet. If they don't say anything outlandish, nobody tunes in. They gave the Espy Courage award to Bruce Jenner over the college BB girl with terminal cancer that raised $1.4M for cancer research.

I simply don't get it. I tried watching the Kardashians and the Weather channel - those shows seemed to be "unsatisfying"

I like ESPN. I like College Game Day, I like PTI and Mike & Mike. The 30 for 30 series is usually very good. Yes, most of them think the SEC is the best conference, because for most of the last decade they have been. They give a lot of coverage and props to B1G teams. Oh, and the ESPN commercials are great! I don't feel I have to agree with everything they say in order to enjoy watching them. They are just entertainers giving their opinions - opinions that come with all the human bias that all fans have. I can go to the internet if I want to do a bunch of analytical analysis (btw, I don't).

Questioning whether or not the Hawks are for real is an honest and fair question, given the last couple of years performance on the field. And, I haven't heard anyone say they're no good. If you want to hope ESPN goes away, go for it. Maybe National Geographic is doing a special on South American toads.

Having a cup of coffee, watching ESPN and posting on HR. It's a good Sunday morning!
